Tack lockers... Are they safe??

I have been looking at these online:

And if they were bolted to floor/wall would they be secure enough??

Owner lives on site but tack room yet to be finished and am having to cart tack back and forth (and leave in) the car. I have a huge under cover storage area (old pony stable) next to mine and plenty of room for it.

YO lives on site and house overlooks the yard. She has offered me her tack room but that is only secured with a smallish combination padlock anyway.

What do people think??
 
Tbh nothing is secure enough if someone really wants to break in.

What you are trying to do is deter thieves - I think if it were me I would be happy to put all but my saddle in it. Your yard sounds like there is always someone around, so thats a good thing, but yes I would go for something like that :)
 
Father in law is pretty handy and is able to bolt it both to the floor and the wall, he also suggested putting it in the corner and stacking hay bales over it but that would be rather a pain. He has also said he could fit a metal gate type door but that surely just send out a message 'the expensive stuff is in here'

He also suggested fake cctv and the warning signs etc. Just trying to make my life easier!! Oh and he would change the lock on it to something a bit heftier!!
 
Lost a saddle from a small tack room, thieves cut through the padlock although they didn't manage to get into the main tack room as it had a steel door with a metal shield over the lock. Equine insurance company wouldn't pay out as the lock wasn't the right sort. Check the extremely small print on your insurance first. Fortunately my house insurance covered it.
 
Insurance states that tick should be secured with a five lever mortise deadlock and all windows should be barred, all it says about the door is that it should be solid.

New tack room is currently a brick stable being converted so no windows, will recommend securing in line with insurance to YO. I have only recently moved there and feel her 'personal' tack room is not overly secure. It's next to the house but only plywood door and combination padlock that I could probably cut with hand held cutters.

Having recently purchased a long coveted ideal leather jump saddle I guess I'll just have to keep in my car for the time being. Not a lot of room in a Vauxhall corsa though but hey ho.

I've got the tall shelved version of this, that I keep grooming stuff, first aid kit etc in.

I love it for what I use it for, but for tack you would need to secure it to the floor as it's not massively heavy - I can move mine around on my own. I'd also want better locks for storing expensive stuff.

As it is, it would deter the casual opportunist thief, but probably not someone who'd come prepared to break into a tack room.
 
As others have said, few set ups are totally safe if someone is really determined . However, insurers vary. I had a similar cabinet which my dad added extra padlock hasps to and we bolted to the floor. I wanted something secure as I used a shared tack room and couldn't guarantee it would be locked in the daytime. My insurers told me that as long as I could prove forced entry that was acceptable. The main locks and windows on the room were compliant with the standard terms.
 
I am a fan of tack lockers, even though if a theif wants in they will probably get it. Tack being in a locker will stall them - presuming they've already had to break into the tackroom chances are they want in and out pretty quickly so any tack not in a locker would be preferable to take. I'm not too bothered about bolting to the floor etc as with the weight of the tack in the are bloody hard to move! I ended up having to take all my tack out, move the locker to its new position and put it all back in lol!

Also I just like my stuff being kept tidy, and I have been on yards where the worst cases of theft were actually by the other liveries so it always helps to keep your tack safe from people who have access to the tackroom.
 
My friend has two of these.. Her dad sunk two bits of angle iron into concrete floor and bolted it down from inside locker and it's also fixed to wall with 4 bolts.. Would take a thief a fair bit of determining effort to move it.. You can't see the internal bolts till door is opened.. Her tack room has an ongoing rodent problem and her tack room on yard also has flimsy lock and door.. She paid bit more than 169 for them..
 
Im afraid not. I used to work in the insurance industry and saw a number of safes which had been wrenched off the wall (leaving the wall in a right mess). If the thieves are determined, they will get in. TBH with that tack locker it would be a fun challenge for the thieves and very easy for the door to be simply jemmied open - would take 5 secs ! I would just continue carting your saddlery home until your tack room is completed.
 
I would rather one of these than leaving my tack in the yard's tackroom! People go in, take their tack, saddle up and go for a hack leaving the tackroom door wide open. My saddle is in something similar, screwed into the wall with a big lock on it. It's only open when I'm using the saddle.
 
Be careful leaving in your car as insurance cover under a motor policy is usually limited for personal possessions in the vehicle (could be less than £300) and I doubt it would be covered by tack insurance as they usually like certain locks etc
