Lownthwaite has a Facebook page ‘Lownthwaite Fell Ponies’. I owned a Lownthwaite Fell, Rob II. He was an amazing show jumper and we also did MM and working hunter pony showing.

I had a Lownthwaite pony too - Jasper. He was a truly awesome pony in every respect!! I jumped a 5 bar gate and a big round straw bale on him

My fell is lovely, I’ve had her since a just backed four year old, just a few pictures from the last few weeks, a fun ride and dressage .
perfect for small adults, most I think a bit much for a smaller child as there is a lot about them.
mine has mild sweet itch which is fairly common in the breed and a bit of a nuisance.
i think like a lot of natives, they can be more spooky/ reactive than you might thinkAE052F61-D149-4319-9943-98B70D823CDF.jpeg7B79131F-5927-4704-8F1B-A1A5FAA48524.jpeg

I've just recently bought an unbacked 4 year old gelding direct from the Wellbrow stud.

I love that I know his entire history and he is everything they said he was and more. I don't know how representative he is of Wellbrow ponies but he is SO laid back and just takes everything in his stride. Love him to bits already. Think we are going to have an awful lot of fun together!

P.s I didn't pay a lot for him as I wasn't looking for county standard although think he would do ok to be fair.

Pretty much all the local breeders will be at the Penrith sales. They have contact details on the FPS website. If I was going to buy another I would go for a Townsend or a murthwaite if you wanted to show. Bybeck have some lovely stock too. I have a Rundale and he is absolutely fabulous though his breeder is unfortunately winding down. Good luck with your search!

I’m 5,8 and have a Fell x Welsh. He’s only 13.3hh but carries me no problems at all. He takes my leg up well. I adore Fell ponies. Lovely kind temperament very easy keepers though!
Obviously depends on your weight too although my vet says he’d carry a 14st person I’d never put that on him. The only issue you will have is saddle fit as they are short backed and being a adult you’ll need a saddle that fits you both.
Took me a long time but we now have one we both love.

Thank you. ?

I'm still dithering on whether to back him myself or send him away. He's been very easy so far so I think ill see how it goes.

How long do your ponies usually spend there being backed?

i went the other way! From having always had natives to a 16.1hh. Thats me riding my welsh c in my profile pic who was 13.2hh and sad to say I always had a sore back after riding any length of time, but never do now riding my bigger horse. I hop on my son's pony now and again (12hh) but not for long periods and the same happens. Im only 5ft4 as well, must just be my conformation/balance/core - or lack of, in all seriousness, I have a long thigh for my height and a big part of my issue was riding in a smaller saddle, despite being small and light I ride my horse in a 17 1/2 and have never been comfier. Just a few things to think about!

I've just read through this thread and am super excited for you....though very sorry to hear about your current horse ???
I'm 5'11" and too heavy lol so am very jealous of those who get to play ponies ??
If money was no object for a native pony I would kill for a Dales ?

I echo your sentiments, on the look out for a dales preferably youngster but to be honest I'm hesitant about travelling far to view in the current situation.

My fells are all three years and under.

Thank you ? he is a really ace horse and nothing will ever replace him, hence wanting something totally different with new goals, no comparisons.

I wouldn’t be opposed to a dales ? I’m on the border of Cumbria so fells seem to be more available

I don't think the Murthwaite Stud is still in existence following the death of the owner and founder Thomas Capstick in 2015, you might be lucky and be able to buy an older one or a younger one with Murthwaite breeding.

Townend are lovely ponies and only a short distance from me.

Another for the OP to consider would be Waverhead, the family have been breeding fells for generations and their ponies have done well in showing over the years and Waverhead stock have been highly regarded as good all rounders although I think that the family have scaled back their breeding and showing over the last few years, the stud is definitely still breeding and hopefully will continue for a long time to come.

We had a Dales pony for my stepdaughter. I am 5'8" and never felt underhorsed when I rode him. We sold him when she gave up riding (in hindsight I should have kept him) and he went on to win at BE100, BD elementary and BS Discovery. As some-one has mentioned, he could be a little spooky but would just scoot a couple of strides and then stop to look at what had spooked him.

When my competition horses have all retired I will definitely look at getting a Dales pony to go hacking.

Oh I thought that the family kept some of the stock? Such a shame if not! I know quite a few went through the sales of his after his passing, heard the Queen got a few!

No Murthwaite foals have been registered since 2015 however it could be that the family are breeding under a different name now??? But I haven't heard. Yes the Queen purchased horses at the dispersal sale and a number were sold abroad and I think some went to the USA.

I'm sure I was told recently that the Queen was riding a Waverhead mare possibly Waverhead Bess???

OMG that first picture <3

Do there tend to be many 4/5/6 year olds at the sale?
Just looked at last year's Catalogue and their were 14 in the pony 4 years plus section but some were older ponies not meeting your specification and 25 in the ponies 1 to 3 years section. I'll be honest and say the majority of the sale is usually foals. Who knows what it will be like this year as I no they put out a post on Facebook saying entries were low and there was some doubt over whether the sale would go ahead, but it is confirmed now and going ahead. Check northwest auctions website and also look at the covid restrictions they have in place and register as buyer in advance.

Our boy Caphouse John Storry went up there 6th July this year and stayed 8/9 weeks, after the basic package you can add any extra you want. I'll message you the contact details. I'm very happy how he's come along and his new owner is too.

The Murthwaite stud was dispersed and no more were bred.

The Queen rode Carltonlima Emma in the past few years and more recently this year, Farleton Fern

I don't have a Wellbrow pony but I have a pony that is Wellbrow breeding (Wellbrow Leo x Wellbrow Gemma). He is so laid back and easygoing. He is not yet broken but unphased by anything (as yet!) On roads, farrier etc. They have a good reputation as being good ponies. Mind was second in the yearling class at a county show but admittedly there were only four entries.

I thought this was the case re the Murthwaite ponies after the death of the breeder.

It was the livelihoods Facebook page where there was a picture of the Queen riding a fell pony named as Waverhead Bess.
