talking About Old Magazines, Do You Remember Stable Management?

That was Merlin, he was a sweetheart. Erica was lovely in her prime too. Did Jo still get her ponies from Derek Ricketts then, he always found good ones for her when I was there.
Was there still another livery yard up the track which used the buildings from the hospital?

Sorry, too many questions!

Went to dig it out - it wasn't where I thought, but neither were the photo albumbs, will go on a further search tonight.

NO, there wasn't any other yard up the track - just the old hospital on one side & golf course on the other. At the back was the bridleway up past the outdoor school.
I don't know who Jo got the ponies & horses from in those days - we had about 60 at the time I was there tho, all stuffed in varying corners. A right mix from 11hh up to 16.2 or thereabouts.
The other 'oldies' were Jet (lived in the '3 box' bit) with Solitaire & Merlin - you wen;t through Jet's box to get to the other 2.

Damn, am so naffed off I couldn't find the mag.

Used to also get Riding mag in the days when Valerie Russell did her Native pony articles & show coverage, as did many other native pony people.

Certainly some memories in this thread!!

I used to beg for a sub to SM, but was never allowed it. My Dad used to sneak me a copy of Riding each month, and often Light Horse as well, bless him. I once won a comp in Riding and had to try to explain to my Mother how I had entered when I wasn't 'allowed' rubbishy horse magazines!!

Both mags were full of really interesting stuff and I would go back to them time and again. Like someone else said.. no matchy matchy nonsense, they were about horses and horsemanship.

Funny how things stick in your mind, I can still recall my feeling of shock after reading how the show pony, Mirth, had died after lying on a plaiting needle which went so far in that no one noticed and she got septicaemia. I know I cried buckets over that.

60!? Heck, there were only about 20, if that in my time and even then we had to push to find a box for them all. There were the 3 boxes below the tack room, the cowshed next to the office was still unconverted, some boxes on the left as you came through the gate by the tack room, hayshed at the top and some boxes opposite the gate; the actual yard finished opposite the tack room and that was a big car park running down to the bungalow; that also had the outdoor running along the top fence of that; the grazing fields were on the other side of the lane that goes down to the station between the hospital and the woods; don't remember any golfcourse though that might just be my memory! We used to hack along that track, turn right into the woods and then come through them alongside the road (Woodmansterne Lane?) then back up the road and into the yard from the other side. There was a garden centre on the other side of the bridleway that led to the downs (funnily enough, met a girl that also worked at HF, she married the whip here once!)

Good memories - except about Mirth which I remembered because it made me neurotic about needles, still does. It's not until something like that is known that you appreciate how careful you have to be.

Your poor Mum, she must have despaired of you, I know my family did; they always thought I'd grow out of it, they still can't believe I'm still as interested! :)

Oops, I have a 1980:eek: copy of Stable Management mag. I'm pretty sure its still tucked inside a photo album from that time too.
Featured Huntersfield Farm over several pages, run by Pauline Voss & Mrs T - Marion Borland BHSI was the chief at the time, backed up by a very young John Dudeney (who had just passed his Intermediate teaching).

Yikes, have really given away my age...... was doing my stage 4 at the time that came out and heading to my Intermediate teaching about a month later

That mag went out to many BHS yards at the time (many yard owners subscribed to it)

OMG!!! That is where I took my BHS Horsemasters exam. Decades ago. I'll not forget that day - I passed but the girl I had given a lift to had failed hers so instead of a joyous trip home it was miserable - I also got seriously lost going home! Got home about 10pm starving hungry and over the moon. Remember mum hugging me and telling me how clever I was.

I remember that as I subscribed whilst working at the yard that was host to Supersonic who was the 14.2 she beat in the Finals he was long retired by that time and as mad as a hatter, he could only be hacked as he hated schooling and hated showing.

I remember Stable Management Magazine. I was a working pupil at The Northern Equitation Centre, at Aughton, 1969-1970 at the time when it was featured in the magazine. I was a subscriber and had a copy which somebody kindly "borrowed" and i didn't get it back! How well i remember being taught by Cyril Johnson and Ernest Dillon. Naturally i am eager to try and find another copy. I am happy to pay for it. Can anyone help me please?

I used to go to NEC and even had a lesson with Dorothy Johnson - I recall Ernie Dillon and his Harold Wilson style mac!! That was SO long ago - have been living in Suffolk for over 30 years! Memories.......! Was Heather Brewer there when you were?

There was a Heather there at the same time as myself. Unfortunately Dorothy Johnson never taught me but I did look after her horse Rio.

Hi! Your post is more than a year old at this time, but I have a bunch of Stable Management magazines from the 60s and 70s. What issue are you looking for? I might have it.

What about "Horse Sense" That was also a monthly subscription. My sister collected it, but when I took over the reins (so to speak) and she gave horses up, I inherited them all!! I still have them now, I think I've got over 100 copies. I still like having a look through to see how things have changed, as these were 1980/1990 era!!

Oh yes, I used to collect that one. It's amazing how much things have changed.

Me too, although I remember nothing about the magazine, just the brown faux-leather folder to store them in. I thought it was a kids orientated magazine, (I think I was about 11 when I bought it) but might be remembering that wrongly. I soon got bored of it and moved on to some other mag - probably Your Horse.

I am looking for a Stable Management Magazine that featured The Northern Equitation Centre, at Aughton during 1969-1970. I would be overjoyed if I can get a copy after mine was borrowed and not returned. Happy to pay for it!

Hi bram. Unfortunately I don't have that issue! I hope you're able to find one somewhere else, to replace the one that was not returned to you.

yes and i still have about a dozen copies!!
Hi Skyrock,

I am looking for a Stable Management Magazine that featured The Northern Equitation Centre, at Aughton during 1969-1970. Connielynn unfortunatley does not have that issue unfortunately. Do you have it and if so would you part with it?
