Had a couple of people suggest going up to Talland for a couple of lessons, to get on something other than my horse and also because there is absolutely nothing around here other than RS production lines (which I know serve a purpose, let's not argue about that).

So, has anyone been and what is it like? I know what the website says but do they only really cater for advanced riders, or can normal every day riders go and get a good lesson?

Normal every day riders can go. I have known of Pammy Hutton for years and she puts the fear of God into me!!! Although never been taught by her. I currently have a 13yr old girl instructed by Talland looking after one of my ponies and she has a fantastic seat and leg position, however her hands were apauling when she first came to me. She said that she was never taught by the same instructor twice at Talland! So progression was very slow - this was in group lessons I hasten to add. I saw Pammy's dressage display at Badminton and she used all her instructors for the display along with her son Charlie - If I were to use Talland, it would be for private lessons only and I would be using Charlie, Pammy or her Husband (can't remember his name). Hope that bit of info helps. Where are you based? I use Neil Spratt - if you're not too far from him he would probably come to you. Good luck.

For an everyday rider I'd recommend lessons with Aisling everytime; she is absolutely wonderful. She's a working pupil there, VERY talented and a warm 'people person'. I'm trying desperately to get a job at the moment, and as soon as I have an income I'll be up there weekly.
The horses there are also top-notch, all incredibly well schooled and happy.

Super horses.
Quite pricey but worth it.
Depends what you want to concentrate on as to who you have a lesson with- Brian is brilliant for position, straightness and improving you as a rider- he doesnt miss a thing.
I like Richard too, he has some great tips for getting the most in competition.

I am a normal rider and I have weekly lessons there. Most of the horses are really nice and the instructers are good although recently they do seem to be changing quite often.

I ride in a group lesson in the evening so just have an AI or someone training to be an AI. Although the lessons are only 45 min long all through the winter (and currently) there has usually only been me plus one other or just me. If you pay for 4 lessons in one go you get a 5th free.

I rode somewhere else for ages because I thought Talland would be too posh but it isn't at all!

I'm in Newbury but looking for someone who can teach on their own horses. Mine is up for loan so I want to get on a few different things in a controlled environment before I go trying out new horses.

does your instructor have anything he can teach on?

I know lots of people that go to Talland to have a ride on a grand prix dressage horse so they learn to apply the right aids to achieve the movements on their own horse (and feel how it should be done!)

I've done the AI 5 lessons for the price of 4, when I wanted somewhere nearby (10mins) to take my baby. The instructors are fine, pleasant, but not exceptional yet.

My sister bought me a £100 voucher for Christmas, so I had lessons with Brian Hutton (I SJ so no dressage for me!). So far I am very impressed, his spots faults like no other teacher and can correct them with easy instructions (no "can you feel that"!!).

A lesson with Brian is worth at least two with a £25 instructor, so I will save and have Brian now!

No, he's teaches on your own horse. But when you do get your own horse he's highly recommended £25 per hour and I've used him for the last year or so. He's the NZ international eventer - just in case you've not heard of him. He's calm, quiet and teaches through positive reward and when I first started having lessons with him I'd not been in a menage for about 8 years and he didn't make me feel like an idiot for just being a happy hacker. With his help my confidence has grown and I'm trying XC for the first time next week!!!
