Tarty mare - how long will this last?????

I have a young companion mare and 2 weeks ago I bought my new 9 yr old gelding and introduced him slowly to her and our little 15 yr old gelding. All is fine and they all get on fine, 15 yr old isnt bothered at all but the young mare is a sopping, weeing, squirty mess and has been for 2 weeks every time she even looks at the new horse. Its getting to the point where he is actually getting cross and starting to bite her to get her to move away because she is so in his face but she just thinks he is getting errhhmm passionate and backs into him even more. I did try to seperate them for 3 days and put her in just with the older gelding and she threw a real hissy fit which i let her get on with and she did settle although she still walked the fence line, squirting periodically but then when I brought them on to the yard together she seems ten times worse so I think not letting her near him is intensifying the problem. So they are all back in together which I am hoping will just get it out of her system.

One reason why I am not keen on mares... I know she cant help it but its not nice. How much longer is it going to last!!!!!????
 
It's spring, I think it'll take longer (you'd probably have been OK if it had been later in the year!).

Mine's been taking a keen interest in the boys for the past three weeks, despite not being in season all that time. Not all of them (she ignores everything except the big warmbloods) but we have three on the yard, two of which are new, and she's dying to get at them. They have remained politely uninterested. It's driving her bats. We don't get squirting etc tho, she just talks to them as we're schooling, and tries to stop for a sniff.

I'm sure your girl will give up eventually, you may just have to let them sort it out - however I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be along soon!
 
Millie is a raging hormone on legs at the moment. This is her second season of the year - first was short and nothingy, this time she is seriously desperate for some action! My 2 mares are out in their own field but she is attracting a lot of attention over the fence :rolleyes3:
It will get easier throughout the year now, this is usually the worst one.
Poor love can't help herself. TBH I really like mares, and their seasons just remind you that your horse is entire.

You'll get to know the pattern after you know each other all a bit better I think. For me I have to keep Millie away from Armas, because otherwise they will be getting up to mischief. I've always been able to leave her out with geldings who don't know what she's after in the past, so separation isn't always necessary :)
 
I have 2 mares and 2 geldings and my friends mare in a group. They all go through stages of ho tarty they are! it is not that bad all the time. Occasionally for a few days my 12 year old mare with squirt and be very OTT with the geldings, but then it calms down. I have never kept track of an exact season pattern, but always start off worse in late march/ april and less noticeable in the summer

Keeping mares and geldings mixed is actually the best option I think. When my mare was just with another mare she would get wound up by the fence wanting to get to the geldings! now she is always mixed with the boys i'm sure she gets it out of her system and is less hormonal.

yes, it is the downside of mares!
 
Mads is in full horse whore mode at the moment - the first season of the season is definitely the worst. She's so packed full of girl juices that she's tetchy about being groomed and she's flinging herself at the cobs like a two bit hooker - she normally gives them a good ignoring. Fortunately she's no different to ride.
