TB event stallion for my mare? (also in breeding)

Hi everyone,
I am looking to breed from my retired mare next year, she is a classical m/w ID/TB which retired from eventing thru injury.
I am looking to lighten her and produce something to event, so am looking at a performance 7/8 or full TB, dont want to introduce any warmblood, just personal preference, so wondered if anyone had any suggestions on who to use.
My shortlist so far consists of
Mill Law
Primative Proposal
Any thoughts on these? or suggestions of others to look at? good temperment is an important consideration for me.

I have used Glenhill Gold on my mare and couldn't be more pleased. He might be heavier than you are looking for but having just won a CCI3* and with all his current 6 year olds and 5 year olds doing very well Eventing in Ireland he would be worth considering. My 2 year has a wonderful easy temperament and I am very excited about his future. I would think he is also cheaper than some others.

Would you class a Trakhener as warmblood? It's more TB than anything else.

I used Future Illusion (Fleetwater Opposition) on my pony mare and have a lovely level headed foal.

Anything with Jumbo tends to have a good temp, so maybe Brief Encounter, who is a lot lighter than Jumbo.

Hi Christine, thanks for that, have looked him up, very similar type to my existing mare, who actually has been a wonderful tough genuine type, def would not want anything too sharp to be bringing on myself at the tender age of 50... eek!....
 
If looking for a classy TB I think I would look at Stormhill Miller over Powerblade. Proven 4* horses and I love his bloodlines. I think he has just been bought by Harthill Stud.

Hi Thistle, just trying to stick to TB ideally and already have a hefty dose of ID in my mare.... but introducing potentially sharp TB blood in a horse I will be producing myself is def a consideration, esp as i am unlikely to be trying to qualify for Badminton..... ;) but am hoping I already have enough ID blood to keep it sensible....
 
Not trying to start a debate about anyone, but am probably not keen to use the horses from Harthill stud, as I am not a major fan of one of its connections. If it had the best stallion for my mare then maybe, but think I can probably find a similar standard elsewhere.

Can't say I blame you.

Just up the road from there and worth a look is MJ Fine Art (not TB though) who is breeding some very nice athletic stock including the top potential event pony at the IPS Auction last week.

Also look at the Bazaar Stud stallions; I drool over Chief each time I see him competing!
 
I have a Mill Law 6yo (had from 4yo - horse in my avatar) who is out of a classic TB/ID Irish event mare who competed at YR Europeans. He's big (>17.1) and verging on middleweight despite being probably min. 7/8th TB. He's not all that easy and unless in full work and kept fully occupied he will find things to do to entertain himself. He is a professional when it comes to competing though and hasn't a bad bone in his body but he does keep you alert :eek:. I wouldn't swap him for the world but I wouldn't fancy him in anything other than a full-time competition home. I have met a few similarly bred horses who have similar characters!

Hiya, there is a super TB stallion near me in Cornwall, My Eclipse, he is by Shaab.

He has evented and the lady who owns him also events several of his progeny.

He passes on the most wonderful temperament, truly lovely.

If you didn't want to send your mare to Cornwall, he has fresh and chilled semen.

I have heard this already tonight, am pretty surprised, because they seem to talk about his fab temperament..... I am def an amateur, so maybe not the ideal stallion for me....
 
My mare is by Primitive Proposal out of a Criminal Law mare. She is little (16.0hh on her tip-toes), very light and compact and well put together. She moves exceptionally well and really is quite stunning (even though I do say so myself! ;) ).

She has lots of scope and is very brave XC but she is not at all easy - not nasty or malicious but has been known to have the odd 'drama queen' moment :rolleyes:.

A couple of others have geldings by PP (FGP and Millitiger - I think - apols if I'm wrong) and I think both of them have much more even temperaments than my young lady :o
 
Primo Pageant - lovely dark bay TB and throws "nice" character horses and there a lot out eventing. He is in Surrey. Can vouch for his character having been happily cuddling what I thought was a 3 year old having just looked at a number of mares - he was very polite! he was the top TB sire in Ireland (after Master Imp) but has now come over here..

Jumbo - mixed views on him - he has bred a LOT so IMO means that means its harder to really know what he throws as he does seem to have a mixed bag of mares over the years. Not been overly impressed by his youngstock with amateurs (important to me as I am one!)

Primitive Proposal - would never go near a Primitive horse again!.

Kings Composer - heard a LOT of good things about him though never seen any stock.

Our neighbour had two by ML from same sweet mare; the gelding is a thoroughly nice decent horse, the filly was a real drama queen right from birth with a nasty streak.

I had forgotten King's Composer. He has a brilliant temperament and really fills the eye; SN's youngster by him is very talented with the nicest nature.
 
I ruled out PP on my mare as heard he is rather on the hot side. If you want that to add some spark then I would say he's very nice.

I met mill law at tremlows. He's a lovely old man and I have seen some very nice offspring.

Wish upon a star would be too heavy for you as not tb. Same as jumbo. Jigilo is far more tb stamp but is by jumbo.

I've not met kings composer but have seen some nice babies on here.

What about Weston justice?
 
I have a lovely Primitive Proposal gelding who moves and jumps very well.

He is a 5yro and still rides quite like a 3yro tbh, as he is a bit weak still and has a lot of filling out to do as he is about 18hh!

He has the sweetest temperament and is definitely not hot but he can be sensitive under saddle.

I would definitely look at Kings Composer or perhaps One More Tiger if you are looking to lighten up and refine with a proper tb- imo, lots of horses mentioned on this thread are far too heavy if you are looking to refine.
 
Brief encounter would suit you I am sure but he is not TB so probably not for you .I have always been a staunch TB person but now look further as a lot of the warmblood stallions carry a very high %of TB blood and help with the movement you need nowadays .My best and most successful eventer was out of a mare similar to yours by a Hanoverian stallion,her full sister won the Hickstead speed derby also.
I have a mare covered this season by Zamboucca if you google him he is a modern type of Swedish warmblood that is also registered KWPN when you see the movement you will see why I used him and boy he has a pop in him as well.His temperament is impeccable.
 
Worth a look at Up with the Lark.

We have a lovely 3yr old with fabulous temp and great movement. West Kington Stud were a pleasure to deal with.

I had heard the same, hence being very surprised at how laid back he was when I met him. However he has now bred a number of youngsters at the stud and (I have friends with broodies there) - his youngsters are consistently the easiest and not at all like that. His owner has been sufficiently impressed to actually try to go back out and buy some of the older youngstock as he said that the youngsters were sufficiently forgiving for a competant amateur i.e not tricky.

I had a Primitive Rising horse and know a lot of other PR horses, beautiful horse, great mover, complete g*t as the most unforgiving horse I have ever met and seriously quirky. Also a horrendous cribber which I found with all the other PR horses I knew. Think they would tend to go in the professionial category. Would be interested to see how his sons offspring have panned out though.

Have realised in doing this, I don't need a world beater, just a nice quality amateurs horses and that temperament is really important, as will not be a spring chicken by the time it is a young horse.
In fact it has made me wonder if I would not be better keeping the Irish blood level up a bit, as will be in my early 50s by the time it is a young horse and therefore may be better with a jumbo off spring or Glenhill gold....
