I have the offer of a young TB x Welsh D. He seems like a nice lad and looks to have some potential. He's 2 going on 3 and is around 15 hands, so could make a good height.

Has anyone on here got a TB x Welsh? What are they like, personality, behaviour, ability etc ?

I've got a 13yo TB x welsh gelding. He's a fab horse- also 15hh. He is very brave, has a great jump and has a wonderful temperament. He can at times have the odd typical welsh hissy-fit where he gets spooky, but he is always safe and a great ride. Here's a pic of him at one of the sj champs:

I think they are wonderful horses- benefits of a hardy native whilst still having the agility and athleticism of a TB. He dos well at ODE and loves hunter trials. I'd say go for it!

I have a half warmblood, quarter TB and quarter welsh D. She has a lovely personality, very willing to please, loves to jump and has BD points. Her bad points are - she's quite spooky and if you're nervous you won't get anywhere :)

I have a 3 1/2. Half Welsh, quarter tb and quarter appy boy. I can honestly say he is the nicest horse I have ever come across. His paces are amazing and he is so comfy to ride. Really laid back and not scared of anything and really friendly. Everyone who meets him loves him and I would happily trust him with kids who, wen he was 2, gave him cuddles, kisses and fed him food from their tiny hands and he behaved perfectly.
However don't know him much of this is the appy in him.
Welsh x do generally have really good paces and good jump.

My friend has one. She's absolutely lush! A beautiful little grey 3yo (15hh)
She's shown a fantastic attitude to being broken in and is working really nicely!
She does however have little fits when she'd bought in and sometimes is a bit funny with other horses but we think this is probably as it's just been her and her Mum her whole life (she bought her in June).

I used to have one. He could be very opinonated and stroppy and at 16hh and me being 5ft it took a lot for me to get him out the strop. We eventually sold him on as he was too much for me to someone bigger and he's jumped at HOYs since, very talented but very difficult horses. But when he was behaving he was amazing:

He was also working at elementry level dressage and had the most beautiful paces. If you have the patience they are brill but I just couldn't cope with his tantrums, maybe if he was a few hands smaller though :p

So, in summary, nice personality, can jump and can throw a strop. So a typical Sec D then....but bigger

Just to make life more interesting, this chaps sire is General Gambul, who has a reputation for producing talented offspring or thugs.

Hmmm 16 hands of Welsh x TB stroppy thug.....sounds, ummm, interesting :D

That sounds about right :)

They are lovely though.

I have one and wouldn't change her for the world!
She is fab, totally genuine yet can be cheeky!! She has taken me PN eventing and a few open hunter trials, won a few things too. Loves her jumping and has got what it takes to do DR but the rider isn't so keen! lol She is barely 15hh, but rides big.

Sounds right, ohh and there faster then a Sec D :)
Yes 16 hands of stroppy thug is very interesting! Luckily the person who has him now enjoys stroppy thugness :p He didn't get the name Taz the Spaz for nothing :p

I did mention speed to my OH and the owner, (they have both been around horses a long time) the both said, "oh he'll be FAST", so a fast stroppy thug, it just gets better and better.

Stroppy is OK as long as there is no malice. Stroppy and nasty is not acceptable.

BSJA..123, the chap I'm looking at is very similar to yours, very nice indeed.

As he's still a skinny baby, I'm going to talk to the owner and see if I can do some groundwork with him before I make up my mind. At present they can't get a head collar on him, because the clever b*gger puts his head up and nobody is tall enough. I'm 6'1", so height is not a problem :D

I have one (with a bit of something irish on the TB side- hence the colour) and he is pretty much the same as the others have described...

Amazing paces, heart of gold, and tries his heart out but he can be stressy if taken out of his comfort zone so needs a confident rider/ handler. There is not a nasty bone in his body but he is strong and fast. He can be cheeky, spooky, opinionated and stroppy when he wants to be but i would still say he is safe and I wouldn't change anything about him.
I would have another in a heartbeat. He's 15.2hh but rides big.

ETA: he is also a good doer and relatively cheap to keep too.

I own one and know another. Both are very beautiful and talented horses but both have a "screw loose" in a sense. The one I know throws the biggest tantrums imaginable so probably isn't a good example. Mine is just quirky and needs a confident rider who isn't afraid to tell him what an idiot he is. He's definitely worth it and I love him more than anything else in the world, but it took a year for him to settle and for me to get used to him. I don't know if this is typical of tbxwelsh, but the two I know hate strangers! They ride big and are very fast!

I've got 2, I bought one 4 years ago after debating packing it all in as my confidence had gone and I can honestly say she is the most genuine horse you would meet and got me back out competing BS and even did a couple of ODE's - not bad considering I would not even pop a x pole my confidence had gone that far away!!

She is out of a Welsh Mare by a TB stallion (Cotation)

I liked her that much I worried about finding another in a few years time so I went and bought her replacement as a yearling - she is now 2.5 and is so much like her half sister - same stallion, different mare but nothing bothers her and seems as genuine as the other one.

I have heard that when it is the other way round as in a Welsh stallion they can be a bit bolshy but how true that is I don't know.

So... a big big thumbs up from me.

All these characteristics of the X sound just like my pure Sec D mare:D. She's a total stress head, opinionated, spooker! Wouldn't change her for the world though.

I've known a few X's over the years and they are fantastic horses, seem to be able to turn their hooves to most things. I'm covering my mare with a TB in the spring as I want to breed my own foal but want something a bit sportier than a D that I can take on & compete with so the TB x is perfect.

I know a few. Very talented with regards to jumping....but as people have said...every single one I know of can be thuggish and throw quite large strops!

I think they take a lot from the welsh D side, but have a bit of the speed of the tb!

Brilliant cross; set out to promote them and was prime mover in forming Welsh Part-Bred Horse Group, part of the Welsh Pony & Cob Society in 1992. Very talented cross, and as with any type or breed how they turn out will depend on their sire and dam (their temperaments etc) and early training. (The 25% and 12.5% Welsh are very good too.) Having said that, agree that they can have attitude, but then I'd regard them also as a competition horse-so you need a bit of that!!

I have one but he has a splash of ID on his dam's side. He's a real trier, but when the toys get chucked out the pram I have to back off.... he's done well at Elementary dressage, workers and cob classes and now we're show jumping over the winter. He's a real "one woman's" horse, but does give the odd whicker to my other horse! He's 18 now, bought him "in utero" so to speak, and I describe our relationship as like Jack and Vera Duckworth! ;)

Interesting comment "one woman horse". My wife took one look at this chap today and how he reacted to me and said "he's a man's horse".

On reflection I wonder if height has anything to do with it, as the breeder, the current owner and my OH are all under 5'6" and I am much more of a height to 'look him in the eye' so to speak. We'll see.

I am certainly of a mind to see if I can start working with him in the field and in hand, I'll have to see what the owner thinks.

I love mine, she's very good jumper and hunts well, push button ride at hunter trials. Fab temp but very spirited will canter sidewards and get excited but never ever buck or rear. Very nice horses and I would love another as my mare is getting older

Agree with this- I am very much Min's human- he has little time for anybody else and most friends describe him as aloof, including a friend who kept her horse here for awhile and who I shared yard jobs with; but he is very affectionate with me.
We have a very strong bond and understand each other well but it took a good six months for us to gel when I first bought him.
Not sure if it's a common trait of the breed mix or not though...

I have one -he's talented and quirky. I love him to pieces but it took me a long time to really bond with him. He's a fab allrounder, supersafe (but fun) hack, great jumper and has lovely paces for dressage. BUT when he throws his toys out of the pram - hehas every trick in the book and ditches rider BIG style. He's very sensitive and you have to ride very tactfully -he doesn't suffer fools so is very much a one rider horse. When he's on your side he tries his heart out and really looks after you. Mines 15hh but rides like a 16hh with a huge trot, very speedy, strong and agile with the hardiness of the welsh -he lives out! I think it's a fab cross!

Wonderful to hear about all these Part-breds! Such a treat to see all the positive posts on them; if you know the Section D's they're the most wonderful breed, but strong characters, also often good jumpers.

Put that with a good tempered TB (or other breeds of course, TB is only my preference-and have seen lovely horses bred with ID, Warmblood, Arab etc), and there's no reason not to get a really good sort of horse. I guess it's like native mixes generally, they can make great riding horses if .
Hope no one is snowed in...

Another name is welsh sports horse... [so im told:p]

yep

i had one for 8 years

I was complaining once about his stubborn strops and someone once said 'why someone would breed the smartest with the fastest I do not know, but someone buying one is beyond me' lol

YES lovely BUT opinionated, stubborn, can be both extremely strong and sensitive depending on the mood but rarely nasty just playful :D

FABULOUS to hunt!!!:D again so long as he felt like it on that day

5 times in one hunt did we go charging past the hunts master, with me shouting some sort of apology as we went past

oh yeah and VERY FAST (at spinning round)

Usually smarter than owner ;)
