My coblet is home from being backed and going beautifully, he's an absolute star. Anyways, the other day whilst hacking he got his willie out, so I thought he wanted to pee. Cue me standing up in my stirrups and trying to get my weight off his back so he
can relax, but I just couldn't get him to go.

When we got home, I tied him up and after a few minutes, he had the biggest pee I have EVER seen!! Poor thing, I felt terrible but at least he had now relieved himself. I did notice though that when he pees, he goes right up onto the very tip of his hoof on his back feet, so I wonder if he thought he couldn't do this with weight on his back.

Anyways, I need to teach him that he can pee with a rider but I have NO idea where to start! So any advice and/or experiences much appreciated. Thanks :)

Mine wont pee when out, he waits to get back to his field... its really odd. Obviously he will if hes out for ages and cant hold it anymore ! but its strange...cant be confortable....

My gelding didn`t like to pee with me on him so l used to whistle when he would be thinking about it. Some times it would work and some times he waited until he got home.

Mike would never go with me on him, for years, lots of long rides and he always waited til he got home, he wouldn't even go in the stable until I'd left.

I taught him to lie down for me and now all the barriers are down! He'll pee anywhere, all his peeing inhibitions have completely gone!

It is fairly normal for them to not want to pee in front of you, if he's desperate enough, he'll go

You can't teach them, when they can't hold it any longer they'll just go!! :D:D And then, try and stop them!!!

Mine does it anywhere now, mid show, whilst being judged, out on a hack mid-canter... even stopped in a water fence just to pee.

It is very very embarrassing.

Ah ok, so it may be a waiting game. The only thing is, it seemed to stop him turning his head to the right. I'm pretty sure this was the reason as I rode him again today and he was completely fine, and as soon as he pee'd after the ride, he happily flexed both sides. I am getting my back lady out just to make sure everything is fine but has anyone else had something like needing to pee affect their horse's movement?

My boy goes in the same place everytime... it is a large grass verge about 2 mins from the yard. He normally goes on out return as I am guessing he prefers it to his field/stable, although sometimes he will go on the way out too - I did upset him recently by going around the block the other way, after about 20 mins I knew he was needing to go and bang on que just as we got to the spot he preformed as expected!
No idea how to encourage them to go with you on board... I am working on the wee to command (aka whistle) in case I ever need a sample in the future :)

My boy won't poo when out hacking unless he is really scared of something (in the wild they poo before they flee the predator), i can't remember him having a wee, but always likes a splash in the field as soon as he is turned out, I though he was marking his territory, also wee-ing in the stable must be smelly for him.

Heck, I'd be happy if mine would just pee anywhere but his stable! He'll go in the field if he's desperate - but I can't even get him to go in the lorry - which is kind of worrying cos we could be out all day and he'll be absolutely bursting!

Hmm.. maybe mine just has no shame........ once he's wee'd he will stand on his tiptoes for ages swinging every last drop off!

Mortifying!!

Mine pees everywhere, he has a favourite spot on a grass verge too that he uses on the way back from a ride. Last week we went XC schooling, and he was sooooo excited he had about 4 wees that day, although im convinced it may have been due to the excitement and seeing his friends go off that he didnt' finish properly in the first place.

OP - my other pony, in 18 years of having him, has only ever stopped for a wee a handful of times, he would rather wait til he got home, theyre all different.

Ok, feeling a bit better now. Thought I was horrible for making him wait til he got home but couldn't risk getting off him as he's still learning and couldn't guarantee I could get back on lol!

So those of you that have ponios that won't pee when out, does it affect their movement at all? He seemed to go stiff on the right rein, wouldn't bend his neck :S

I have one who never poos or wees while I'm on his back. He likes private pees! I have another pony who is exactly the same - but I think he was taught this somehow as he was initially taught to drive. Never an issue for me as I'm never on for ages in one go - I make sure I get off in between classes. Might be a problem if I ever did endurance though.

Kub - My boy even though he does go when out on a hack, he sometimes waits til his favourite place! and he gets a bit stiff, shuffly and doesn't seem to want to move properly. ;)

There are some that do move differently when they need to do on thing or the other. Whistling can help - if you see him going in stable/in-hand/in field whistle and praise. It is possible that you might be lucky enough to get him to do it 'on command' but at any rate that might encourage him.

I'll come and sit on him if you want! I seem to have some kind of "hot" seat!

I was told when I took Splish on that he wouldn't wee if anyone was watching, within about 2 weeks of me riding him he'd wee anywhere, with any audience - his particular favourite audience became picnicing children!
Mason will also do the same - I hacked him out about 2 days after I bought him and within about 30 seconds of me getting on for the first time he had a wee! Now he wees as soon as he knows he's coming in from the field, and as soon as he's back out again!

Joyous and Tickles - Thank you, glad someone else has seen a difference too! I'm just worrying a little too much about everything at the moment because he's newly backed and I'm constantly scared I'm going to break him! Admittedly, he's not exactly a fragile boy...

LOL but I still worry all the same!

S&P - Oooo please feel free to come and work your magic on him, I'd rather he was embarrassing than uncomfortable! :D

My youngster will usually pee once on a hack but if I stand up in the stirrups it disturbs him & he won't go. I just sit towards his shoulder to try & make him comfy & he is fine with that. Just him maybe.

I've owned my boy for over 8 years and I think he has only ever pee'd once when I have been on him

He's very good at peeing before I do anything with him though, more often then not he will pee before I bring him in for the night or when I go to catch him for a ride, it's quite useful really :D
