Hi all,

We had the dentist out today to the farm. My boys teeth are fine...i wasnt worried the rate he gets through turnips/swedes! However, the YO's old mare (30) he shares a field with had one tooth fall out and he didnt want to do much else with fear of loosening them all. She has been quidding lately hence the dentist coming out. She looks v well for her age and is happy and healthy in every other way. Eats grass fine, dentist said she is fine with anything upto 3inches in length. The hay she is on at presnt is chopped short so generally she is ok with that.

Any suggestions of a hay replacer incase she struggles more or we end up running out of hay (they tend to come in unless it is warm and dry) and for future winters.

Thanks in advance for advice.

Hi, I went through all this with my lovely old mare who finally died last year at the good old age of 39! Towards the last few years the annual dentist visit just consisted of him counting what was still there and letting me know how many teeth had gone since the last visit :( My girl used to have 4 or 5 enormous buckets a day of speedibeet pulp, chaff, soaked calm and condition and "Old Faithful" - anything I could get into her. However, I would give some of the big feed companies a ring because they can offer some really useful nutrition information, and veteran nutrition is becoming quite sophisticated these days.

Maybe try fast fibre? I feed this to give additives and also has vitamins etc. Lots of fibre. Fed soaked so easy to eat, can replace hay.

wow well done you MoM, that is a fab age! Thanks for the advice will definately give some companies a ring and see what they suggest.
Thanks Jane will ring around and see if they reccommend fastfibre for her, it does sound suitable to me tho.

I have had problems with my pony. I soak high fibre cubes with hot water to turn it into a mash and really soak the hay I do use. The high fibre cubes in part replace the hay but not fully. I add a veteran supplement to the cubes after the hot water has been soaked in (it really dries out very fast with boiling water on it) so can then add cold water to it and it ends up as a kind of a soup.

great thanks for that! luckily at the moment it isnt too much of an issue as she is out because the weather is being kind :D it is when the weather turns and they are back in. She is fine eating grass at the moment so thats good. But i shall fefinately be keeping these ideas at the front of my mind when it comes to winter!! She isnt mine but i tend to look after her ansd feed her as she lives with my horse so suits my routine to do both!! (YO is very generous with billing me after a long winter:D)
