Tell me about you New Forest ponies

Well, today's part-bred NF was lovely! The plan is to have it vetted this coming week, so fingers crossed it passes. I will tell you all about it once it is officially mine.

Mine is fab but a bit oppinionated lol Hes out of Howen Moonlight Miss and by Farriers Rambler... wish I could post pics though lol Hes called Howen moonwalk and is a character! hated him at first but as I have started getting the measure of him, he is becoming a lovely, willing pony :)

My mare Howen Sunset is out of Howen Baby Owl (Blackwell Sunset) and by Pondhead Pan-Shine (Burnford Jester). Do you think they're distantly related?

I've got a Forest born and bred & didn't come off the forest until a 5 year old.

He's my first NF & a real mixed bag.

He's sharp & spooky to ride, but when he's confident with something he tends to think he knows it all & doesn't need any interference (he gets quite cross if he doesn't think you are doing it right or getting in his way!). He's not great in traffic (I keep him at a yard with off road hacking - he's got better with 'stable traffic', but I wouldn't take him on a road) and a strong sense of what he thinks he should be doing. He'll let you know loudly, even anything is amiss (real or perceived ...!). He's also very clever with quick reflexes - if you don't keep him entertained, he'll make up his own. You literally can't take your concentration off him for a second, as otherwise you'll be in trouble! For a long time, his default setting was 'no' whatever the question, however you asked.

He's got a HUGE personality, is very cheeky & you definitely need a sense of humour and patience with him.

I've had him 3 years & is now very loyal & will try his heart out for me - but does find it hard to trust 'new' people.

He's a hardy, good doer with great feet & is easy to do in that respect.

I could have happily sold him for 50p many times over numerous times ...! I wouldn't part with him now, but I'm not sure if I would rush out & buy another NF, I have to be honest. A friend of mine has a NF stud in the New Forest and even they said he's quirky - which wasn't what I was looking for.

He's the absolute love of my life though.

That's odd spellcheck must have changed my post as I definitely said granddam not grandsire. Any way his name is conker ( tilebarn marys son). I am rubbish with tech stuff but will try. He is a bay quite dappled 14 HH. He's five. Forest bred. Will try to put a photo up how do you do it?

That's kind of it right there.

I have a Brock and I have always said that with a forest run New Forest (and I suspect this is true for any 'wild' raised pony) that the veneer of civilisation is paper thin. In other words, they are trained, as opposed to being tame, and years after they have come off the forest, they are still very much in touch with their instincts. The fact that they stay with us and allows to ride is most likely because they quite enjoy it.

Until recently was also had a Yewtree, but at 21 she developed a blockage in her small intestine and a week ago last Friday we had her put to sleep. She had spent more time with people as a foal and was a completely different package, but still very much a New Forest.

My lad is 12 now, we have had him since he was 6 and very green. He is food obsessed, full of fun, love and character. He will turn his hoofs to anything and is always game for an adventure.

They are great ponies and always entertaining, fun and a challenge. The lady who backed my lad said he was the most stubborn animal she had ever worked with... that's my boy!

He sounds lovely! It must of, it sometimes seems to edit my posts, I once put Howen Sunset, and it then changed it to *How Sunset*! :O . (But Blackwell Sunset is a stallion, not a mare).
You put
You need something like photobucket or Pintestest. Or put the link in here and I'll do it for you.

Yes I put dam by mistake just thought weirdly clever of someone to correct me. Don't have photo bucket I'm afraid. Wld love to put piccy up!

Mine is similar on a good day he is amazing and on a bad day I think I would never have a forester again!

Luckily he is very good in traffic but can be spooky sometimes off road, yesterday he saw something near the gate of his field and it took me 15 minutes to get to go over to the gate. He is also frightened of big leaves.

Thankfully we have 99% good days, the main issues I have with him is keeping the weight off and when he does not like something he can be very difficult, for example if he gets fed up with being in the stable he will just climb out, he also has a very strong herd mentality so could never leave him on his own, though he is fine to hack out alone {but I suppose in that case he is not really alone as I am with him} and he prefers to be in a larger group than in small herd turnout.

Howen Moonlight Miss is by the same sire as my foundation mare - Knightsway Billy Boy, so Howen Moon Walk is a nephew! I have bred ponies by Farriers Rambler and have one growing more hippo like as in foal. I love looking at the pedigrees so apologise to all NF's owners when I jump on them for breeding details. ;)

Small, do you keep in contact with your pony's breeder? I know they would love to see pics etc.

Well, she passed the vet with flying colours and came home this afternoon. Meet Callie 5yo, NF (Hawkhill Brony) x Appaloosa (Azola Zipa D Do Dar).

Well that wasn't the greatest success ever! It told me it had not uploaded it and then I end up with 2. What did I do wrong. I pasted in the Img code.

14.2hh. I though when I first saw her she was going to be too small but she is really wide in the barrel (the girl on her in the photos is 5'8" and I am only 5'6" and she did not feel too small at all).
