This seems like a ridiculous post, but I really struggle with socks.

Do you use any particular socks? What length? What thickness? Under or over?

I have very narrow calves so my breeches are never tight therefore always have some level of folding in them and end up rubbing.

If I wear socks underneath they ride up, if I wear socks over it's uncomfortable. Socks over and under is so hot and I can't bend my ankles!

Saw a SJ walking around with what looked like knee length fishnet socks over her breaches the other day. Where do I get those?

Tia

I wear standard Matalan or Sports Direct cotton rich calf length, with a little toe seam as possible, in a thinnish material.

They would do as you say, but I firstly pull them up then deliberately fold them back on themselves so the top elastic part is at my ankle. They then stay up and are smooth. The top on the fleshy bit has no elastic too, so they don't make a dent.

Have you tried shorter socks that only go over the soft bit on the bottom of the breeches, so that you don’t have the breeches fold and rub? I would do this under gaiters which are not tight enough to make the socks rub.

Also very soft breeches might help. I have recently bought a pair of light weatherbeeta riding tights and they have very soft material which I can’t imagine rubbing whatever I wear over them.

What about this type. I find them surprisingly warm in winter and not too hot in summer. You could wear them over on under breeches.

Depending on you foot size, the child/term/petite option may fit you better than than adult.

I also have some noble outfitters ones that have the same sort of leg but a padded insulated foot for winter but they don't sell in the UK anymore.

Nobble Outfitter socks ! They are thick enough at the bottom , but a really thin nice stretchy material over your calves so dont add extra bulk - dont move and are just generally fab !

My absolute favourites, but I'm not sure you can get that brand in the UK anymore (sob). There's probably some old stock still kicking around in sales though, OP should hunt for them!

Pop socks

I have 2 types of rider purposed socks. Both lovely. I own some three quarter length socks for Western riding, bought in USA, and 2 pairs of long socks marked left and right which came from a local saddler years ago to wear under long boots. I think they are Mark Todd
I dont usually ride in any of these. I ride in short boots so wear OH's M&S men's wool socks. If the weather is below freezing I wear thin thermal socks under them but my current yard does not ride if it is below freezing.

Don't get me started on socks, I have a drawer full but mainly wear 2 or 3 pairs in rotation. I like a knee length sock but often they are too baggy in the foot🙄🤔🤔 I have quite slim legs and feet.
The ones I am currently wearing are I think Le Meiux but the newer ones I've seen don't look the same. I did have some noble outfitters ones which were ok. Hate hate hate buying socks

Lemieux and Shires do the same style. They're what I always wear - thin enough on the calf to go under anything, but the length stops the thicker bits from falling down.

The noble outfitters were the best socks ever. I also have a pair of Musto that are similar and brilliant. I'm making do with some nylony imperial riding ones and some horze ones, neither are nearly as good as the noble outfitters or Musto though :(

Noble outfitters...but as someone else said I'm not sure those ones are sold in the UK anymore.

But Le Mieux do some pretty much the same...can usually get in sale for

I like ankle socks but have some riding tights/breeches where I end up with a couple of inches of bare leg and anything that ends at my calf annoys me or falls down. I don't like thick knee socks so that's where something with a thinner leg suits.

My favourite socks are from BAM, a bamboo clothing website. I first got them at Burghley and have gradually replaced all my socks.

I have never bought from BAM or even registered on their website but very oddly they send me a catalogue and a free pair of socks every year. Most odd.

I get lots of unsolicited catalogues from very expensive places. I must be on some rich list somewhere. God knows how, I buy everything on ebay, 😂

I buy loads of their socks and I never get free ones! Not fair! 😭😭😂😂

I am a big fan of Rohan ankle socks designed for summer walking. Expensive but last for years and hold their shape forever. Fantastic for all horse footwear.

After reading the replies I decided I absolutely must buy some noble outfitters. Onto 4th page on Google, sold out everywhere 😢

It does seem like proper horsey socks might be worth the extra though, I'll investigate.

Maybe try Woof wear ones? My oh bought me some long and short ones and they have nice foot support, stay up, last well and the short ones may be more comfortable for you.

The first pack he bought me were size 8-11, I have size 5 feet at most. Proudly told me that wasn’t an accident but when asking the lady in the shop for advice (to buy socks? 🤷‍♀️) she told him that riders liked their socks to be too big to fit nicely in boots! I mean no idea where the hell went but what weird and wrong advice!
Proper size ones are nice though!
