Tell me clever dog people- how do I stop this?

That’s just something I’ve never thought of. Why?
We have always let them out if they ask and yes Ive left the door open in nice weather but always shut it in otherwise.

This is the first time we have ever had a dog who could escape though.

For me, cats, squirrels, cars, other dogs, people who don't like dogs, the fact that I want to interact and be around/stimulating for the dogs, not just for them to please/entertain themselves. Mine probably wouldn't get stolen but that's also a big risk for a lot of people. We never think these things happen, until they do.

I don’t let mine out as I don’t trust them to actually do what they are out there for and I object to being woken up when they remember they didn’t go earlier.
During the day it’s just paranoia. We live somewhere very safe now but in Essex you wouldn’t leave anything out, ever, from a dog to a pair of gloves

It would never/has never occurred to me to shut them out. Would you shut the door on a toddler playing in the garden?

I’m genuinely 😳 that this is a bad thing to do.
I guess it’s like the people I’m horrified at leaving their dog outside a shop.
I think I must have got lucky until now. Never had a problem.
As for poo. I walk round the grass with a poo picker (horse type) in daylight and pick it up. I walk on the gravel park between the door and gate, so no standing in it isn’t a problem.
I’m currently stood outside with them! Every days a school day

Yes of course.
I’ll give it a try. Just now they all just stood looking at me like I was a nutter but they need to get used to it I guess!
I was shooting today, so Ffee is tired and didn’t want to go out. I had to go and walk her up and down her regular pee spot saying ‘go widdles’ until she blinked first and we could all come in again. The others stand there looking at her… please hurry up, bonios waiting!

Bonio’s are golden!

Privacy film on the bottom half of your door may help the situation also.
Good idea. I thought about the putting them else where when I said the other doors were all glass that this was probably the better place but that could work. I think he knows my car though. Worth a try!

I'm far from being "clever dog people", my experience with the family dog when I was a kid doesn't count, I think.

However, I had a somewhat similar issue with my old mare. She used to paw when I brought her food bucket all the way it took me to get to her. What helped was the following: As soon as she began pawing I instantly turned around and slowly walked away. As soon as the pawing stopped I turned again and walked towards her. When she began pawing again I turned again and walked away and so on. The very first time it was to and fro for a while as you can imagine. But eventually she got the bucket without pawing on the last meters. I did that for a few days and it went faster every time with fewer turns. After she'd understood that pawing didn't get her anywhere and standing still was rewarded she never did it again.

Obviously this requires good timing if you want to try the same approach with your dog. You need to hear or see that he stops jumping (or a helper who can tell you) so that you can react immediately.
