I purchased a Shires Full Face Mesh Fly Protection Veil With Nose Extension for £9.50 online, which arrived on 5th June and already the eye mesh has parted from the rest of the material and it's rendered useless.

Am I wrong in expecting the shop I bought it from to accept it back for a refund? I rotate the mask with 2 other types I have (as my horse is easily rubbed), my horse is kept in a paddock with electric fencing - so there's nowhere to rub or scratch the mask and it's only used during the daytime when it's used. To me, it wasn't fit for the purpose it was sold for if it can't last 3 weeks use.

Am I wrong to expect a full refund?

Nope, not unreasonable at all.
In fact if they dont offer a refund (as obviously not fit for purpose) then they are walking the wrong side of consumer law!

I have the same fly mask, and it is so far lasting well this sumer. It takes a massive amount of abuse from my girl and is still going strong! It sounds like you have a faulty one? If it isn't fit for purpose then you are entitled to a refund or exchange at the discression of the shop.

It's not at the discression of the shop. If it's not fit for purpose then you are entitled to a refund under trading standards legislation. (Sale of goods act 1979) Quote that at the shop and see if they roll over... they should. And if they don't ask to speak to the boss...

Thanks everyone. I bought it from Fast Tack Direct but couldn't get an answer from their helpline today. Have sent them an email, so hopefully will hear back shortly with a positive response. Says on their website they can take up to 28 days to decide whether to refund or not on a damaged item. Hope it doesn't take that long to make a decision about a fly mask used for less than 3 weeks.

Agree with it not being fit for purpose. I have four of them, and have been using them for over a year, no problems.

They don't have the right to decided whether or not to give a refund. If something breaks within six months of purchase then you're entitled to a full refund. Don't let them try and intimidate you into giving in. If peopel accept shoddy goods then there'll never be any pressure on the manufacturer to improve.
