My rescue companion cob is 19. He came in very lame on his hind leg . Vet called and thinks it’s some sort of tendon issue. She wants to scan in a few days to see what’s happening.
He’s from a national charity but is not insured.
He is not very keen on box rest and I could set up a small space for him .
My question is does anyone have any experience of a veteran becoming field sound after such an injury ?
I am not prepared to put him through an operation at his age as he wouldn’t cope with the aftermath.
I don’t want to put him through months of box rest even without an op if he’s still going to be in some pain that can’t be controlled with Bute.
Any advice gratefully received
TIA

Don’t panic …. you are doing the usual human thing of jumping to worse case scenarios without knowing what’s going on. Wait a few days, scan if necessary and then go from there. Even if it is a tendon injury lots of horses recover and it’s very unlikely he would need an operation. Every thing crossed meantime

Thanks for your reassurance 😊 we’ve not had him long but he’s wormed his way into our hearts

I’m also on the don’t worry especially as he s retired already. Our oldie has probably got tendon issues but as long as she is marching me to and from the field I’m happy she s happy. Another livery I know has an oldie who is lame with his issues but he is on daily Bute and drags his handlers to and from the field…so definitely don’t panic about operations and box rest.
