taking taz out for a potter today as he only had his shoes off a little while ago and he is coping really well with not having shoes but we are only walking

so i wandering along and i see a horse infront but there was no rider and it was trotting away my first thought was loose horse but then i though it could be being led by someone on the ground as a lot of people do that around here

then it turned around. it had no head collar or anything on and was completly alone and it had noticed taz and started cantering towards us and before i knew it, it was talking to taz and they were snorting and squeeling at each other, at this point i called the police they spent ages taking my details and decided i needed to talk to hampshire police so i was put through to them, they took all my details again and then they decided that i needed surrey police. by this point things had escelated (sp?) and the horse had turned around and double barrelled both me and taz, taz took it and just moved sideways away and then the horse became very threatening towards taz, so he turned his arse and kicked the horse all while i was still on the phone on hold.

they then told me to hang up and that they would call me back at this point we had backed up to a gate and there was wire and a ditch behind us and the horse carried on kicking me and taz and biting at taz's face, i had tried to get away from it but it wouldnt let us past and kept putting itself across the path so we couldnt get passed.

the police then phoned back and asked me for my details again for the 3rd time and then asked me if the horse was still with me and at which poit it squeeled and charged me and taz and taz whipped around and kicked it again. i then became increasingly panicked which wound taz up even further and i was still holding taz with one hand which my whip in that hand too talking on my phone to the police and trying to kick the horse off as it was biting my leg.

while all this was happening and you could see the obvious distress to me and taz 3 dog walkers walked past without even a second look even though i was shouting for their help and i was still on the phone to the police they were still asking me questions like cant you get away from it, will it let you touch it, how close is it etc to which the horse was biting taz and was letting me touch its face. he asked me if i had a head collar or a bridle on me - well taz was wearing it so no i didnt he then asked me if i could get it to follow me on to the nearest road WTF?! and then he put me on hold. he then came back on and said and i quote

" we are unable to attend to this incident as our officers are not equipped to deal with it so if you could call someone you know to help you that would be good. im really sorry i hope this is sorted out soon would you like me to call anyone?"

to which i went completely off the rails i went hysterical and i was shaking and crying no one would help me the horse had already caused injury to me and taz and i didnt know what to do.

i called my step-dad who must have been very confused as at first he couldnt understand me because i was crying and then i shouted help me and then the horse mounted taz with me on him to which point i screemed while still on the phone "get off, get the ******* off" and just general screeming. taz was double barrelling him in the legs and the belly and i had dropped my reins and i had turned around and i was beating it everywhere with my schooling whip there was nothing else i could do. my step dad then sounded panicked and said i will be right there to which point he hung up not knowing where i was and not knowing what had happened.

i rang him back and told him where i was and what had happened as it must have sounded like something completly different and the horse started kicking and biting again then it trotted about 50 yards away from us and called to taz and then because taz didnt move it cantered back and started to wander towards the road.

the horse then noticed a woman who was walking her dog and trotted towards her and then my step dad turned up and started to go after it as it took off. he sent me back to the yard with taz and at which point taz was lame and i was talking to the lady and apparently it had been out since the early hours of the morning. i couldnt believe no one had done anything about it?

when i got back the police met me back at the yard and put me in touch with the community leasion (sp?) officer, i then got a call from my step dad to say he had caught the horse and had put it back in its field and that the owner had been contacted

i checked taz over and he had 6 hoof shaped swellings on his side and lines of swelling on his bum from where it had tried to mount him, he also had a few cuts on his face from being bitten. the other horse was fine and had only hoof marks on his side which was just where the dust had risen. i have a bruise on my thigh from when i caught me when he mounted taz.

i am just so glad it didnt happen to anyone else. i am also glad i was on taz as he stayed so calm even when i was hysterical on the was home he took me home even though he was sore :(

this all happened when i was in my bareback pad and luckily taz had his reflective bum sheet on so he didnt get any serious injuries

pointless post really but thats an experience i hope no one else has!:(

How scary for you & Taz so glad your both ok as could of been much worse. What a scary experience for you both. Hope your both not to sore tomorrow!

Why didn't you move away and get out of the situation by going towards the road or use your schooling whip to keep it away in the first place? Rather than ringing the police who as you discovered where a bit useless. Riding away/scaring it away at that point might have stopped the situation escalating.
In future, keep calm, make it unpleasant for the horse to come near you and ring someone who you know has some horse knowledge and so can help. As a hint if you have a schooling whip, most horss won't come near it if its making swishy whip noises.

Goodness me!
Thank goodness you are in a fit state to tell the tale. I'm sure it was terrifying but it could have been so much worse.
I think you should consider making a complaint about the police response. That was just not good enough.
I do hope that you both make a full and speedy recovery.

Obviously SusieT has no experience of anything similar. I watched a stallion jump over a wall to attack a gelding which was between him and our mares. There were people there immediately trying to separate them but the power and danger to all concerned have to be seen to be believed.

Loose colt.. I assume by colt he looks young so yearilng/2 year old. By the fact there were no broken bones or serious injuries, I'm also assuming it was a curious youngster rather than an adult horse.A full on stallion I agree would be a different matter, but getting away sharpish would still be my advice rather than hanging around on the phone.

do you not think i tried to get away? i tried swishing the whip at it, it didnt care it just spooked taz, going towards the road would have put other road users at risk which wouldnt have been fair and some one was going to have to sort the horse out at some point not just leave it for it to happen to someone else.

and i have learnt that now i shouldnt call the police :o

thank you everyone!

I've been attacked by the stallion on the moor. I always carry a hunting crop with me, but even cracking that at him didn't scare him off, he was hell bent on attacking my horse. We galloped to the nearest gateway, I jumped off to open it, pushed my horse through and shut it in the face of the stallion. But even then the blasted thing was straining at the gate to get through, I was a bit worried the gate was going to give. My horse cantered off into the field we were in but he didn't go far and I caught him easily enough.

But would you believe my poor dog got left the wrong side of the gate so I had to go back again, hit the stallion in the face with my crop, open the gate and let my dog through! Gah - it was a nighmare!

Never, ever would it occur to me to call the police (not that we have signal here anyway), I can't imagine what you thought they would be able to do to help.

Glad to hear you and your pony survived to tell the tale - scary stuff.

Oh SusieT is out in full force tonight!

That sounds horrible! Glad your both ok, this is a situation I hope to never be in!!

I imagine that OP thought that the police would want to stop the loose horse getting onto the nearby road and causing an accident.

Me too. there was a loose horse here recently (let out maliciously), there was talk of it being shot by the police as a danger to the public.

p.s. I have a yearling colt standing short of 16h, for all hes a baby I think in the above scenario id rather take my chances with a mature stallion of the shetland variety than a big lump like mine :o

My friend and I got chased by a stallion out on Exmoor when we were holidaying down there. It was terrifying, because albeit it he was only about 12.2hh he clearly meant business!

StormyMoments, you did well to stay on and not get any broken bones. I'm glad you and Taz are OK if not rather bruised and battered.

I can't believe that people would just walk on by and not help though. Poor you.

Thank you everyone :o taz seems fine today a little bruised but back to his normal self, the horse must have been about 2-3 years old standing at about 15.2hh, luckily it didn't have shoes on other wise it might have been a different story :(

So easy to say unless you were in this situation its hard for us to know. Well done you and Taz , Police are useless by the time you get through all their stupid questions serious accident can occur.

OP already said it had backed her into a gate way

I mean all they need to know is
what actually is the situation
where is it happening

I mean they can sort out the other questions later

by the time they get through all their

whats you name
where you live
what shoe size are you
are you sitting on a horse
:confused::rolleyes:

questions This horse could have kick a passing human in the head , knocked over old lady .

They are like the RSPCA
they can sit in a car
have coffee breaks
answer the phone

I suspect OP didnt want this horse to be killed or injured by passing car .

I would have done the same thing.

Up north when those horse got out on rds and one killed police went into action then. It does depend on your area , we finally got our local fuzzy to spring into action, after many reports of motorbikes in our woods.

Most of the stallions ignore ridden horses on the forest but very occasionally you get one attacking riders (which are removed if enough people report!), on the one occasion one has attacked me I'm afraid I whacked it hard and uncompromising around the head with the schooling whip.

What a truly horrible experience. Thank goodness you both weren't more seriously hurt. And that you weren't riding a mare, as presumably that would have made it all worse. I do hope the owner of the colt has been in contact with you to at least check that you are both okay. I would have expected the police to have been more help & would want to keep him off the roads if possible.

Hi hope you are both OK. I dont know what I would have done , thankfully never been in that situation. Have the owners of the colt been in touch ? I think I would be wanting a word with them if I were you. So glad that it wasnt worse and that your horse didnt panic.
You would think that the police would want to get involved, that might have been a child on their pony, they are quick enough to attend if it was a dog attacking somebody ?

Yes, unfortunatly the police are only interested once the horse has collided with a car.

Flamin muppets.

Glad you're ok.
