Text book euthanasia

What a caring post. Sounds like Minty could not have asked for anything more from life. I am sure this post will have reassured others facing this horrible decision. Although it is so hard to lose an old friend, when you know you are doing the right thing for them it does ease the pain. RIP Minty.

I too have had one euthanised by injection, & it was exactly as you've said.

Me too, I'm now sat here in tears at your well written post HH.

RIP Minty

Yes, JHT, we were talking saying there must be a fair few he's pts for us over the years now.
I've only ever seen one go less than quietly, and that was a TB filly who had a terrible fear of vets and men after being fired and having battery acid poured on her poor inuries (bastards). She was so terrified she turned nasty and we had to sedate her over the door to even examine her. I was so worried she might attack an innocent person if ever they went to touch her we decided to euthanise her there and then. She was led out into the field and the sedation was just about holding her together mentally but her adrenilin must have been sky high because it took a load of anaesthetic to make her go. In the end he just gave her so much it worked but all the others have been like Minty's end, gracious and peaceful with no idea whatsoever to the horse of what was about to happen.
I've had them shot , done with a bolt and a gun, but this method for me is kindest not only on the horse but the owner too.
JHT has it down to a fine art awful task it is, so I never worry it won't go according to plan.

Sorry for your loss S, and I'm glad it was textbook.
Unfortunately Cybele's passing (by injection) was anything but

So sorry to hear of the need to say good-bye, you don't sound at all hard, it is an inevitable part of good horse ownership. The method was good for your mare, we had a different experience of OD and have all since shot, which we have found to be dignified and quick and carried out with the utmost professionalism. We are lucky though in having an excellent horse slaughtering business within ten miles of us.

It's very peaceful and rather beautiful (sorry I know that's a strange choice of word, but I can't think of one better) when it's done properly, not at all traumatic. Just very sad but with a feeling of relief afterwards.

RIP Minty, it sounds like no horse could have wished for a better breeder/owner than you.
