Having had a lovely ride this morning I go to turn my boy out in his field, and find one of his three field mates hogging the entrance. Usually they move away if I flap a lead rope at them but today this one refused to budge. Rather stupidly I thought I'd be able to get my boy round this one and opened the gate, got him half in .........and then all hell broke loose.

My lad whipped round, knocking me flat on my back in the mud, I let go of the gate and all three horses went dashing out into the yard

. My lad took the opportunity to have a jolly good roll

In this melee someone gave me a hefty kick to the back of the head and biffed my nose, which is not the sort of nose that bends easily. It is now even larger than usual

I have however spent the rest of the day offering up thanks that I was still wearing my crash hat when all this happened

as I'm convinced that if I hadn't at the very least I would have been knocked out, and possibly worse. I know its not practical to wear a crash hat at all times round horses, but it made me think a bit..........

ouch. similar thing happened to me last year, they all decided to have a fight with me in the middle. got double barraled kick on my bum then trodden on. all i can say is arnica does wonders for bruises. sure you'll be the same but mine were all swollan and purple. you'll be sore for a while!!

Goodness! Sounds awfully scary, good to hear your not too badly hurt though!

I had a similar experience when a very grumpy anglo arab (I knew very well) just charged at me in the field. He knew what he was doing though as at the last moment he swung his bum round and I just got a face of fur and then wet mud! I stupidly wasn't wearing a hat at the time but I put it down to the fact I was quite young and so still bounced!

Hi, glad to hear that you are going to be alright. My two got away from me as well, today. The pony barged past me out of the stable door, followed by the other one who was tied outside and broke the baling string. Luckily they ran down the lane and finding the gate to another field open proceeded to gallop fult pelt around the field, the big one in full tack! I had just groomed her,. She she got plastered in mud, including the saddle, at least she didn't trip over her reins.
After catching them I decided to still go for a hack up the woods, then I fell off in jumping a log and landed in six inches of mud. At least I had a soft landing!

You are right about the hat.

Ouch!! you are very lucky!
I stupidly once rode my pone in a head collar, bareback not wearing a hat. Just riding down the track then he spooked and did a few stides of canter..it was all fine until i tried to stop and he obviously didnt like the way the headcollar put pressure on his nose so did a little jump up (like a rear but not that bad) I was not expecting this and fell off. pone just stood there but stood on my hair which makes me realise how close he was to my head which could have been so bad.....
I count myself lucky and I would never have thought he would do anything like that but just shows animals are unpredictable!
