Hi everyone,

I have had a great week because some lovely person on HHO pm'd me saying she thought she knew someone that knew about Fred and gave me the her email address

The lady gave me as much of a description of Fred as she could remember so we could clarify it was definitely him and everything but one thing came back 100% (she couldn't remember if he had a snip). So I am 99.9% sure it is Fred.

To cut a long story short. Fred had the kissing spine opration in 2005 and I think the lady thought he would calm down if he wasn't in pain anymore but he still proved a little too much for her to handle. So instead of doing the obvious (sell on), she had him pts (or so she thought). I have spoken with various people that knew him in between 2003 - 2005 and they are all really happy that he is alive and well

So from here, I am going to treat his lameness issue as being caused by muscle deteriation around his spine. My vet thinks that lunging, long reining and walking out in hand for a few weeks will strengthen him up and then I can get back on YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEE

His old owner, hasn't yet got back in touch with me but this is all the information I needed anyway. I thought when he was supposedly pts, something horrfic might have happened to him but it transpires that it never.

Thankyou Mudsplasher and C!!!

What happened when he was supposedly PTS? How did his owner not know that he was still alive? If he has a lovely new owner in you then I am glad that he wasn't PTS for whatever reason though.

Well thats the confusing bit because no-one really knows

I'm guessing that a dealer bought him off the abattoir. His old owner sent him away to get pts so I guess she just took it in good faith that the deed had been done

I am really glad he wasn't pts too...thankgod

It was obviously meant to be! My first horse was destined for an abbatoir as a foal along with her mother. They both became lovely riding horses.

I've seen this happen a lot, I'm sure there was something on watchdog about it too.

But think about it, if you owned an abattoir and a horse came in to be PTS just because the owner couldn't handle it, wouldn't you try to sell it on, if not to give the horse life but also to make money?

The 'meat man' that I know is also a horse dealer on this basis... is it morally wrong? I know I would rather do right by the horse than the person who sent it there...

Glad to be of some help and happy that Freds history has been clarified some more for you

. Good luck with him he has obviously found a perfect home.

Well it's certainly an interesting point isn't it?? Had the abattoir not intervened then I wouldn't have my lovely horse today so I do get what you're saying but had I sent a horse to an abattoir to be pts (which I would never do as we have plenty of space etc up here to deal with these things), I would expect that it should be done because in a way you are paying for a service albeit something I would personally never choose.
I think in any normal circumstance, a horse that gets sent to an abattoir would be in poor health but I guess you get exceptions - like Fred
