Driving to see the horses tonight, got within 100 yards of the enterance to the farm, turned the corner to be presented with 5 loose horses. (not mine!) They were shifting, and I feared for my car!! (is that bad!?) I somehow, and luckily pulled into the left, which is a tiny church parking area, and they dodged to the right of me. All 5 x 17 odd hands of hunter type cantering and arsing about.
Then of course whatever direction they were going in, I was going to be behind them (when I turned around). I drove forwards to the enterance of the farm, saw the yard girl, face white and all, picked her up bucket of food and 3 head collars, and drove carefully up the road. She told me she didn't close the gate while she gave them their feeds, it opened a bit while she had her back turned, and one didn't want his feed and the others followed.... ooppss.
Now here we were, following horse hoof marks on the road, leading towards a main B road. = Heart in mouth.
Luckily for us, the local contrating business were returning to the farm, big combine and all, pratically blocking the road. So, all horses stopped and pretended they were all innocent and grazed the verge!
Next problem was to get 5 horses back to where they belong, using 3 headcollars, 2 people, 1 car (mine) and clear the way for the combine! Que 1 dog lead (mine) 1 extra combine lad (passenger from combine) to drive my car, and some string (also from combine) to lead the horses. I 'stupidly' led 3 horses, while white faced embarressed girl led 2. Luckily all horses were now well behaved, and walked calmly back and enjoyed having the escot of my car with 'lad' and combine following.... it was a sight!!

Just goes to show, how these things CAN and DO happen and luckily for us all, all well, no damage to anything obvious and people in the right place at the right time! Phew.

ps... while doing this, I saw the hunt knacker wagon, and felt so sad as its been a week since Juno went. Luckily for me I had 3 brutes to lead and orgainise, so it was only a moment of sadness. Whatever next!

OMG thank goodness everyone ok and safe again. What a horrid situation to find yourself in but thank goodness you turned up when you did and were horsey and able to help, and of course excellent timing on behalf of the combine!!! Well done to you all for sorting out a potentially horrific event, how fortunate fate took a hand in the right direction. That poor stable girl is going to have nightmares about that I should think :-(!
