The 14.1 jumping the round bale AGAIN- just a point

i have read previous posts below and do agree it is a fantastic picture, I have jumped a couple of them on my coloured before and they make for great jumps, HOWEVER, word of warning:
A local girl a similar age to me was jumping one last year, the horse hit it with it's front feet on take off, the bale began to roll slowly and buggered up the horse's landing. Consequently horse and rider fell, rider had broken collar bone and the horse incurred a knee injury.
I just felt the point needed to be raised that although they are fantastic things to jump, if you are going to jump one PLEASE place something underneath it to prevent it rolling- I know they do look pretty sturdy but they don't take a lot to shift.

Im glad somone else has pointed this out, didn't want to spoil everyone going ooh and arhhh, but round bales unless chocked by somthing are an accident waiting to happen. but other wise a brill pic

I can understand the facination- we have lots of them at home and they look like soo much fun but since that accident I do stick a couple of fence posts under them to stop it rolling. I couldn't imagine getting stuck on top of one, poor pony! Oshk's biggest trick is contemplating running out because they are skinny and then jumping like a pleb last minute!

I have jumped a couple, but I have to admit my heart is always in my mouth

I always check them first and if they move then it is a no-no.

well if 2 of us can roll them round our field to get them in the barn (one if its a bloke) lol, then it doesn't take much to shift them.

I stick to the smaller square ones.

One of my last XC's I did had these as jumps which I loved but quite a few horses got stuck and proved good number reducers for the run out's...but agree OP they need to be chocked (sp?) or could be dangerous.

Yes I totaly agree with Rosiipims, Dont jump round bales unless you have some sort of deathwish.Unless they are secured in a frame,they roll too easily,and will cause a rotational.

haven't seen any footage, but i wouldn't ever jump one. iirc when they first started being made they were used on a few Team Chase courses and causes some v nasty falls (esp from horses trying to bank them) and at least 1 horse fatality...

Think I would now though put a gutter pipe before and behind one though, just in case!

Aged 15 I jumped attempted jumping across a row of haylage bales on my ex-intermediate event horse. He smacked them with his front legs , came down on landing and turned over on top of me. Luckily I didn't have any injuries from him rolling over me but I did break my collar bone very badly when my shoulder hit the ground. So from experience I really wouldn't suggest jumping rounds of hay or big bales of haylage!

Forgot to add that the bale continued rolling over and over until it came to rest about 20m from the others, they might look solid and heavy but they're far too easy to shift when a horse hits them. Whenever I hack past I look down at the row of bales with one missing and think how lucky I was.
