The agility thread

Just back from another good day. My girls definitely prefer the cold 🥶 Young Daz was again fabulous. Came out of the agility ring thinking we had a win but apparently was E'd. The one time I had no one there to video me 🙄 I just want to see what I did. But she got all her contacts and her weaves were good. She then went on to win the jumping in only her second comp at G3. Was well chuffed. Pebs was on fire 🔥 and so fast. Did brilliant in jumping on a very tricky course but it all unravelled at the end for an E. Then in her agility did all the hard stuff but decided to stop and stare at the judge whilst on DW so we had time pens but other than that was clear. My friend won so not too bad. Home in good time too.

We finished up with steeplechase - lovely simple driving course and I’d drummed Barrie’s top tip - tits to target - into my tiny brain. Unfortunately I over rotated my rack which pulled him off the jump for a 5, but he ran beautifully and fast. Looking forward to the video. We were unplaced in 10th but got one point in the league 😁

Club show today, 1st agility and 3rd jumping in senior for small dog. Large dog ran a 24 second agility course but dropped a *lot* of poles on the way. Got her A-frame though and was generally manageable all day so I’ll take it.

I was impressed with her. She had to put up with a lengthy delay while they faffed around with the timers and kept a lid on it well . The best I can say about my guy is that he had fun , he really does like to redesign courses . I’ve got to seriously try and get better at learning courses , had a real “senior moment “ and in the agility . That’s age not grade 😝

Oh you've made me feel better. Lately I've constantly forgotten courses!

Absolutely shocking show today. Terrible weather, car park flooded, mud everywhere, trainers instantly sucked the mud in…

Got there at 10.30, ran at 1.30. Dog went straight over the second jump instead of around it…

Withdrew from agility as didn’t like the courses being set and I was losing the will to live - the judge averaged 16 dogs per hour for the first five hours…

I feel as if I have webbed feet.

Edited to say in the graded agility classes high which were 4-6 and 7, seven of the 16 classes had no winners as all eliminated.

We had another long cold wet and windy day. But my girls still so consistent. A major positive was that I didn't go wrong....at all 😁 Pupster Daz won her G3 jumping with a pole down. In the agility a pesky 1.3 time penalty put her 2nd. In the combined 1 to 4 jumping we had an excellent E 😂 It was the first time she had competed in the outdoor arena and it was all a bit distracting at first. Once she settled she did some good work.

Pebs won her G4 agility. Frustratingly with .3 of a time penalty 😭

However they both went so well and after all the bad times it's so good to have some good runs. I need to get better at the wafty stuff to save some time 🙄😂

I have put on my big girl pants and entered Pawsability in Somerset in March and April (about my limit to travel, 2 hours and course walking from 7.30am. Neither me nor the dog are natural early risers). Four runs in one day is within him now he’s nearly four years old, so not as depressing if he uses the first one as a ‘meet the judge and enjoy being off lead’ session!

Another cracking day 🥰 Pebs had a progression win in the combined 4/5 agility with the only clear. So so proud of her. Then a great jumping round for .4 of a time pen grrrr. Daz had 2 cracking clears for unplaced 2nd in agility and unplaced 3rd in jumping. They defo prefer it indoors and colder weather. I am making the most of the Indoor shows whilst I can!

Desperate for advice, not sure if this is right place?

I am a very experienced dog & horse rescuer, veterinary professional of 36 years experience , know what I'm doing... but I now have a serious health diagnosis out of the blue, can anyone help with any possible avenues for a very very high energy , 8 month old female pup who won't be suitable as a "normal" house pet? She is mostly a Mudi, rescued from Bosnia 3 months ago, have several other dogs I rescued from Bosnia, but my friend who is looking after my dogs so I can go into hospital for urgent surgery cannot cope with this one.

She's only 9 kg, won't be more than 12 fully grown. Needs an agility / working type home. Can anyone help please?

I noticed your name on another thread today. I hope you are now well.

Did you manage to find a home for your little dog?

Bit of a mare today! Didn't bode well when I realised I hadn't entered Peb for the jumping 🙈 why?why?why? Probably because I don't use Showtime much so do not check as often as Plaza. The 1 - 3 agility for Daz was first. There were 2 tunnels under the dog walk and she was scared, almost terrified. Kept jumping off she was shaking and it broke my heart. Then I picked her up and gave her a hug and led her over in the end with the judge helping from the other side. She smashed the rest of the course so was super proud. A nice clear in the jumping for an unplaced 2nd and an E in the combined jumping but went well.

Pebs in her one agility class went well but I couldn't find her after the see saw 😂 she is so small and not the easiest to see. She also pinged the dog walk but went well.

A freezing bitter day but thank goodness for thermals Dryrobe and a decent catering van! Physio arranged for both girls as concerned about Daz.

Mixed bag today, I hadn't been to this venue in almost 10 years but was sent photos from the last show that showed large-dog-suitable rings and walkways. Turned up to find they'd shoehorned another ring in, reducing the sizes of all, and put a trade stand in the narrowest walkway. In many cases the course design hadn't accounted for this and with a few exceptions was pretty dire.

Large dog coped remarkably well, after a lot of working-in in the pissing rain, and even sat and queued on a couple of rings despite the complete lack of space. Apparently though I can only have Not Screaming At Things or Good Ring Performance, not both together. Small dog had a full brace of Es, part crappy lines on the courses and part me being frazzled from large dog management.

One of my teaching group had a win and graded up though which is just fantastic, they've worked so hard for it.

Having been watching Rew like a hawk I decided he was showing no signs of lameness, so off we went to a league show. Steeplechase - I had a good wait, dog then didn’t take the first jump but veered hard left towards a tunnel, that was weird. Put him back on the start line and he ran a joyful clear but the judge had given us 5 for not taking the first jump. Agility was joyful carnage and the weaves were terrible - I mean really terrible. So back to the van to relax, and when I pulled him out an hour or two later he was lame, so back into the van, and we’ve been home for hours now and he’s appearing sound indoors and on grass earlier. So now I need to find a good bodywork person as the one I usually use can’t see him until 31st March. Goes without saying he’s on box rest for the foreseeable.

Edited to say I think the sore toe last week is a probably red herring, and the rubbish weaves also pointed towards discomfort or pain - although in Thursday in training he was diligently doing all 12. Ah well.

@blackcob one of those days today! Have you been to Iconix, is it worth the trek if you're just a normal person?

I have not (the outdoor venue, not the winter series at DSD?) but it's on the list for large dog when she's ready for it as I want the big 'European style' courses with spacing. Lots of club members have been and I'm assured it's good. Not just for pros!

Thankyou BC. I have smalls who sometimes struggle to make the time so wasn't sure if worth it. But everyone says it's good to go for the fun, the vibe and the experience.
