I'd try wood pellet base, straw on top. Semi-deep litter should work pretty well I reckon. I've been very impressed with straw/ wood pellets combo.

Cool! I would avoid straw but possibly could use straw pellets? I think my mare might try eating those too - so possibly wood pellets then shavings on top?

I think shavings on top is a nice bed, but you could just use pellets if you aren’t fussed about it looking thick and inviting. I avoid shavings with my serial poo masher, pellets are so much easier and don’t move and get all mixed up with the dung. Wood pellets are very firm when compacted, so much better if horses are moving around a lot.

I can get Millie deep littered fairly easily, but Polly is a box walker and toe dragger and attempts usually fail miserably.
If anyone has successfully deep littered a box walking, toe-dragging filthy mare, please tell me how!

Yeah that should work I would think. I just suggest straw because I find it easier with my one who mashes her poo in! But can see it might not work if you've got one that's a fatty.
