Back in Feb I found a little cat at the side of the road, so I took him to the vet and they took him in. They said I had to try find his owner within a week or he would be PTS - the RSPCA didn't want him because he was partially sighted and partially deaf. I put posters everywhere and couldn't find them - so they released the cat to me instead. This little man was covered in matted hair, just bones and generally unkept so we assumed a stray.

Later found his owner - she had kept him in a garage for his whole life (found out he was 19) - she described him to a T and told us he was "ferrel" and hated people, which is why she kept him in the garage.

This cat has spent the last 2 months snuggling in my bed at night, following me around the house and enjoying sitting out in the sunshine together in the garden.

Went to give him his dinner tonight... and he was panting really heavily and collapsed :( so we rushed him to the vet and they put him to sleep... saying he had suffered a pulmonary embolism?

Is there anything I could have done to prevent this happening to him? I feel so sad :(

I think you did the best thing of all - give an oldie a good life and didnt make him suffer in the end. Some people are stupid and horrible, others are wonderful and kind - you're the latter. Big hugs. XXX

So sorry to hear this :( I doubt very much there was anything you could have done.

Please remember that he spent his last lucky days being loved and cared for by you and that is such a huge gift to give any living being :)

x

19 is an incredible age for a cat!

I don't think there is anything you could have done, at least he had a nice life in the end with you, living in a garage all his life sounds horrible and cruel,

RIP little cat, and *hugs* to you!

That is so sad, I'm so sorry for your loss. :(

Don't beat yourself up at all, it sounds as if his last two months with you were the best months of his life. Well done for taking this chap in when he really needed it and for treating him so well.

This. Big hugs for you, it is horrible to lose them, but you did all the right things for him xxx

I doubt you could have done anything - but at least he had happy times with you after what sounds like a pretty sad life. RIP:(

What a lovely old cat he looked and how lucky was he to have you find him!! What a shame it wasn't years ago but at least he did get to live the ''good life'' in the end.
There wouldn't have been anything you could have done and whilst the overiding feeling at the moment will be sadness you should take heart from the fact he had a wonderful time with you while you had him.
He died a much loved and special cat and that is all thanks to you. Many would have left him or handed him in and not thought about him again.
You have given him the best of times.

Oh my gosh, I am so sorry, what a little sweetie and what a horibly sad life he had before you came along. It sounds like he has a wonderful last 2months with you, I bet he thanked his lucky stars the day you rescued him, sounds like his last days could not have been better x

Aww bless you for taking him on. At least he knew a couple of months of love and kindness before he passed. And at least he found you :) big hugs to you hun..x

What a sad story but he had such a happy end. Far better to have had a couple months of cossetting with you than to have ended his days in a cold, dark garage. Hugs xx

Nothing could have prevented this; why you gave him the most wonderful days of his life and what a great point for him to move on from. I think it takes a special sort of caring to take on an older animal, knowing you wont have them for so long. As this is often when they're abandoned, and need homes the most. Lucky kitty, hard on you, but seems to me you did a wonderfully humane thing. X

What a lovely snaggly puss! And a very lucky boy to have ended his life with someone as nice as you.

No, there's nothing you could have done but rest assured there is a place for you in moggy Heaven. x

Arr Bless you are so kind to give this poor little cat a good home thank goodness he knew what a happy home was.

You did everything possible so dont feel guilty just glad that although your time together was short it was happy.

19 is an amazing age for a cat! Well done for giving it a nice last 2 months. Things like this happen, when me and my partner moved into our first house last year, I thought it would be nice to take on his parents cat who basically lived outside in their shed (after their dogs always chased it out of the house) - it was getting old and thinner every year so I figured we'd give it a nice end to its like. I was thinking it would last at least a year, it was so happy for a month - loved being inside and playing but it suddenly began going downhill, suddenly stopped eating and within a week we had to put it down! This cat had lived about 10 years outside in the howling blizzard winters we have and I take it inside in the warm and its dead within a month!! Devastated!

What a gorgeous little old man, he was very lucky to find you and have a couple of months of pampering.
Made me cry now.....

19 is a grand old age for a cat and there would've been nothing you could have done to prevent his age catching up with him. It sounds like you had a happy time together. You should be proud you gave him such a happy last few months. He looks a real cutie.

He looks so happy in those photos - bless you for finding him and making his last few weeks so good.

Your story has bought a tear to my eye - I had my 18yo Siamese girly PTS last week - it's so hard but we know that we both did our best for them.

C xx

Just to echo everyone else - you did a wonderful thing taking him in and giving him two months of love and care. Not to mention a kind end at the vets rather than suffering in a garage :(

I volunteer at a rescue specialising in elderly animals. I always think the most of people who take on the most needy critters. Presently there is a couple who are adopting a virtually blind/deaf crossbreed dog. They travelled over 2 hours to meet her and said that they don't care whether she recognises them or not but want to give a good home for however long she needs :).

what a lovely person you are and could you have done more ? No you done everything to make a little cats last months the happiest and most loved of all - sleep at night knowing you are such a nice person who gave a little one some peace quiet love and care - big hug to you for being nice xxxx

Oh he was gorgeous, and very lucky to have had you!! You couldnt have done anything at all so please dont beat yourself up, just be proud that you gave him love and care when he needed it most. Big hugs to you.

Rest in peace little boy x

I am so sorry. There is absolutely nothing you could have done to prevent this.
Just be happy that you gave him a wonderful last 2months of his life and yuo will always have the memories.
He looks so happy in those pics and at least he knew that not every human is cruel, well done you for rescueing him.

Poor bugger. Think you did everything you could - these things happen. He looks wonderfully happy and relaxed in those pics, he must have gone feeling loved :)

You gave that cat the best two months of his life. He looks so contented in the photos! Big hugs for your loss. Its generous, loving people like you that make the world a better place. :) xxxxxxxxx
