Knobberpony has rubbed her bum bald and I'm suspecting pin worm.:( I've fenced off anything she can rub herself on,washed the trough out with Jeyes fluid, washed her bum twice a day with wipes and dettol, covered it in vaseline, and poo pick daily.I'm going to worm her with Panacur 5 day as soon as I can get some.I was about to move her to another field and rest their current field for a few months with the sheep on it.
My questions are,how far into treatment with Panacur am I best to move her? I don't want to infect their new pasture, but don't want her to reinfect herself.

Will the frost kill any eggs shed onto the ground?

Her field mate is showing no signs of pin worm, they are not that friendly with each other and don't groom or get closer than a few feet.Should I treat him or wait and see? Both ponies were wormed with Equlvan duo about 3 wks ago,but obviously it either had no effect on the pin worms or she has caught them since worming.
Thanks for any advice.

I can only speak of my own experiences, but my gelding got pinworm, I treated it with neem oil mixed with vaseline (just to make it softer, later on I just used it neat). Wipe it all over the back end, on any rubbed areas and just around the anus as well. It works in several ways, helps soothe itching, stops eggs sticking, repels the worms and also changes their ability to reproduce on a hormonal level apparently - however it works my boy was clear in 2-3 days and seen no sign of them since with no other intervention. I did my mare at the same time just in case, they both live out 24/7 together with no other contact with horses. You are supposed to continue using the oil for about 6 weeks I think, I did every day for about 2 weeks, weekly for 2-3 weeks and then monitored very closely for several weeks after that, but no evidence at all after the first 2-3 days. I was amazed, having read of the difficulties involved in using wormers I would definitely suggest trying this. Just wear gloves when you put it on because you can't get the smell off your hands!!

Oh, that's interesting about the neem oil - I've been using it on my two, just because I have some for itchers and because it is easier to apply than Vaseline, plus I knew it was insecticidal. I thought I would have to use it for longer though - I have been doing every other day for about three weeks now. (I use either a hoof oil brush or cotton wool make up pads). Do you think I could reduce the intervals now - HRH the 35 year old arab mare in particular thinks it is degrading to have her botty done lol.

I'm no expert, but you could try reducing to twice a week and just be really vigilant for any signs of eggs returning. I used cotton wool pads initially (thinking how ticklish a hoof oil brush up their bum would be ) but found it easier to just don a rubber glove and slather it on. I have used neem for all sorts of stuff now - itchiness, bald rubbed areas from insect bites, insect repellent, minor cuts - and it has been consistently impressive!! I keep a bottle in my field bin for first aid now (no yard, I have a round metal locked bin in the field for grooming kit etc.)

Thanks for that, I think a few more weeks should do it. We never saw the eggs, just the adults in the poo. Actually I think she liked the hoof oil brush :) Great stuff Neem oil, I had some recommended by a friend late summer and it has been so useful. I have a tub now so I can warm it to get it liquid and dip cotton wool or brushes in the top.

Thank you, that is really interesting and very useful.I have ordered a litre bottle and will get cracking as soon as it arrives.Knobberpony must have the cleanest bum in the county at the minute.

Hurray! Neem oil has arrived and I've melted a load into a tupperware box, with some vaseline. It didn't make my kitchen stink too badly and knobberpony was quite happy to have it applied. She seems to have stopped itching, thankfully, and is in her new field.I'll keep treating her and hopefully we will have nailed it.
Thanks again for suggesting it.

Go on the viovet website, there wormers are very cheap and a good writ up explaining everything, think its vetramin which just does pin hair and skin worm worked on my horse which had same as your pony hun xxx

I have asked before about hair and skin worm and couldn't find vetramin on the web site you suggested before. Can you provide a link to the information on the parasites and the relevant wormer please

Dollyanna you recommend neem oil to me on a different pinworm thread and (touch wood!) it's worked for mine. I did 3 x dose of Srongid P too, but I applied the neem oil every day for around 4 weeks and it looks like we are still pin worm free!
So thanks for the tip!

Hi hun its VECTIN the wormer. go on viovet its under horse wormers, just click on the wormer that comes up vectin and it will tell you all about the worms it kills!!! sorry my fault for spelling it wrong before xxxx

Vectin is an ivermectin wormer like Eqvalan, Eraquell and many other names. Unfortunately ivermectin is not very effective for pinworm whatever the packet says and not the drug of choice. The old fashioned ones are proving the best here, 5 days of Panacur or double pyrantel.

I have had problems with pin worms in my bigger horses and think Ive finally got it nobbled. I think its partly due to all the new wormers being so readily absorbed in to the gut and as such they don't get all the way through to the anal area where they take hold.
Ive tried double worming, the vets given mine dectomax injections (bloody expensive) but whats sorted the problem out nice and simply is panacur. Now I know everyone says worms are immune to it these days but thats fine and a matter of opinion but one thing it does do and if you horse is ok in terms of other worms, is it goes all the way through the horse so it can treat the issue and sort the pinworms. Its now my no1 way to treat pinworms and its not let me down.

squiz22 and Borderreiver,I agree with you.I tried Eqvalan for pinworm and it was useless.Panacur 5 day seems to have done the trick, and I've applied the neem oil since she finished the Panacur, just in case there are any more lurking that didn't kark it.The fact that the normally suspicious knobberpony was totally fooled by the apple flavour and ate it mixed in with her feed was a bonus!

I have just used a double dose of strongid P for suspected pinworm, and certainly have a fair few dead ones this morning!

My mare has had pinworms for ages, tried Equest and Equavalan, both seemed to kill off a lot of worms, but didn't cure her. Spoke to me vet and he suggested a double dose of Strongid P. Found a lot of dead worms the following morning, now am daily bum wiping and spraying with a repellent that contains Neem oil, so fingers crossed we'll have got them this time.

Just a quick update.I've been applying the Neem oil every day for the past 10 days and she doesn't seem itchy any more. However, she is fenced in with electric tape,so can't rub herself on anything if she was. However,I got there today to find that they had both broken out of their paddock as I'd forgotten to reconnect the wire after moving the fence yesterday. My heart was in my mouth when I checked her,as I was worried in case she'd rubbed herself again just as the hair was growing back - there are certainly lots of post and rail and trees for her to rub on,but she hadn't! She mustn't be itchy any longer, which is fabulous news.Thank you for the recommendation,I'm planning to use it in the summer as fly repellent too.

Wormed again last week with double dose of Strongid P and no worms apparent! Still using the Neem oil to wipe around bum and dock area. So far looks as if we have knocked these nasty little blitters on the head!

I did five days panacur guard and one month of Dalit wiping round bum and dock with ivermectin ? Lotion from the vet every day for a month.
It did the trick .

That's brilliant GingerNinja98.We are still pin worm free too.All her hair has grown back and you'd never tell she ever had them.

I'm happy to report that Neem oil works for head lice too. Both my girls got them ,and my husband wouldn't believe that Neem would work,so bought some over the counter stuff that was very expensive and didn't work. However,Neem oil left in for over an hour killed every one and the eggs too.I'm very impressed!

Thanks for all the updates, it's great to hear that it wasn't just coincidence with mine! I have a new bottle ready and waiting for the midges reappearance, think I might try making some spray repellent with it somehow.

samif, I get mine from ebay, Mother Natures Goodies or something like that, and initially I mixed it with vaseline but now I don't bother, just use it neat. Just be aware that a tiny bit of solid oil goes a very long way once it warms up!!
