So all of you who haven't been riding during the snow-fest, how were the ponios this weekend?

I popped my 3yo on the lunge to see what sort of mood he was in. (He has been lunged in the snow a couple of times but that's about it.) Well, I'm glad I didn't hop straight on. Airs above the ground, kicking, bucking, farting... at one point he leapt through the air and tried to land in gallop, overestimated his own balance and fell flat on his face, got up, leapt through the air again and carried on as before!

So, after a bit of grass skiing and almost having my arms removed from the sockets I hopped on. Let's just say, you know the feeling you get on a horse that's never been sat on..?

Looking like a semi-re-backing is in order for my young man.

How have yours been?

An absolute star - and she's a six year old DWB that hasn't been ridden since the end of September, other than me sat on twice for about two minutes each time

.

Sounds like you've had fun

Our first one was Friday a week ago, and he was really good! I've noticed over the last year that he seems to be ok with having a few weeks off.

I nearlt fell off yesterday after some big spooks at the lasting snowmen
smirk.gif

and today he was a gem, very well behaved worked in a lovely outline, really worked through his back... was expecting fireworks! last time he had a playful buck and bronc, but im sure that shall come soon!

I swapped Hattie over to Happy Hoof chaff from molassed chaff over the snow as I knew I wouldn't be riding and didn't want her having excess sugar without any work. She went nuts last year when we had all that snow and couldn't ride so thought I'd be prepared this year. Rode yesterday and today and she was Ploddy McPlod. Happy Hoof it is then!

Lunged yesterday, he was great, and rode today. He was really good except on way home a little JRT decided to run up and down the fence barking its head off. Usually he wouldn't bat an eye lid but today it was an excuse to have a hop and skip, throw head in the air etc. Passed dog and was back to normal in a few strides!

He's been getting a handful of Alfa A twice a day, and hay. That's it. You'd think I'd been feeding him rocket fuel. And he's not been kept in; I don't understand why he can't gallop off the excess energy in his own time. Being lunged is obviously incredibly exciting
confused.gif
but at least he's "enthusiastic about his work" I suppose.........

mine was an absolute star i was so shocked he's only 4yo and has been so naughty in the field galloping about, crashing in the electric fence and just getting muddy! but got on him and he was as good as gold
smile.gif

well if only mine had the excuse of being 3
wink.gif
. He went out round the block last thursday and had a road hack yesterday and was a star. We hit the grass track today and umm, not quite so star like. My insistence that he wasnt allowed to go as fast as he liked because after 10days off proper work and at his age it wouldnt be a good idea didnt go down very well. having 2 reins on the dutch gag had limited impact and cue lots of leaping, in ability to move sideways when asked cos leg means go faster right?!
grin.gif
and due to me having the handbrake on permanently lots and lots of welsh knee action.

*sigh* he is a low energy welsh normally and is 17.

Oh no have kevved up and posted the same question, despite (I thought) checking first!

My lad was fandabbydozy too (though I did get the snow mound spooks too rubyredshoes

).

I wonder if they were all so well behaved, as they've lost a bit of fitness?

Ditto the re-backing! Lets just say Sydney was erm.. mental :|

He was fine apart from taking the necessary precautions - spinning, half rears etc - at all the white 'tigers' we passed on the way. He didn't want to assume they were piles of snow - just in case

Daughter rode for the first time in a fortnight today and her pony was fine - quite forward-going, but didn't misbehave. But she had been going out everyday so has been exercising herself!

Qr- Mine was really good for the first ten mins, then exploded and bronc'd up the side of arena. Took a bit for him to settle then finished on a nice note.

Heres hoping we don't get anymore snow

well my 22 year old cob x bucked my poor sharer clean off!! how bad do i feel now as my other horse who i was riding as i expected fire works was a dope on a rope!!

My 4yo who hasn't been ridden for 2weeks was an angel on Saturday and just as good today, even with tractors, a bus and lots of flooded roads! I don't think water will be a problem when the weather clears up and I can take her XC

When i went to look at new horse she hadn't been ridden in over 2 weeks (she's very very fit and needs exercising every day). Didn't put a foot wrong. Apart from jumping. Had to walk her over the poles as she would go towards the jump but then she flew over.

my 4 year old has forgotten that he was used to traffic and shied at every vehicle that passed on our 1st hack out after 4 weeks!
blush.gif

so starting off steady again
smirk.gif

only had control in walk
trot... so extended, i couldnt put my legs on like i normally would as she shot of wheni did it the first time

canter was so collected it could of been piaffe lol, i couldnt put legs on as she took of, couldnt hold as she fought and felt like shed go up and if i let go of her shed shoot off again
bit of a disaster really, will lunge her first tomorrow...

I sat on her and pootled around the yard on Saturday and she was brilliant.

We ventured down the track into our fields this morning and erm....it was something of an adventure. She would NOT walk, only wanted to jog, and when we reached the bottom field where the XC jumps start, she started pinging up and down and trying to bugger off. I would have let her have a little blast, but it was so wet and slippery I was afraid she'd fall and hurt herself (and indeed me).

in the end I got fed up and we jogged back to the yard and i lunged her for a bit to let out the excess energy - and there was quite a lot of it ! You wouldn't think she'd been going out every day, regardless of snow! Once she'd finished being an idiot on the end of the lungeline, and was tired, i got back on and walked her round.

Can't really complain though, I am just glad she's feeling well. My vet said i might never be able to ride her out of walk again, but Ella has proved her wrong. She's a tough little pony!
