The girl who rides my horse has cut his tail so the end is above his hock

Could be a lot worse - look what happened to Rosie. Twice

Rosie how on earth did that happen? Poor pony!!

ETS ruddy Nora I thought her tail bone was coming out of the bottom but it is the fence behind!! Even still WHY on earth did your mares tail get cut that short?

LOL I thought the same thing about Rosies tail bone too!

I dont really understand why everyone thinks this is so funny though...I would be livid. And unless she had my permission, she'd be sacked.

I trimmed the pony's tail a few weeks ago. It was dragging on the ground. Again. This is the lenght after the trim:

If I arrived and found it lopped off any higher, I would seriously cry!

Lol!!!
well actually it didn't technically get cut... a goat ate it

:D

Absolutely :D I wouldn't worry - I know of a pony with mane and forelock at LEAST twice the thickness of that whose wee owner gave him an even more enthusiastic treatment - looked hilariously cute but I say that bc of how much it made me giggle and bc I've not been on him!

all tails should be hock length imho, any longer and it loooks awful and *****, no offence to anyone but short tails and mane's are far smarter than long ones

You can get tail hair extensions if its bothering you that much! They are used quite a lot apperantly, not sure were you get them from but try google sure you'll find something :)

You see, I think this is very funny, and my answer to OP is honestly to just chill - it will grow.

BUT - if anyone EVER did that to my horse I would be almost inconsolable.

When I was about 12 I had the privilege to be 'adopted' by my pony club DC and spent all my holidays at her house doing pony stuff (non-horsey parents you see). I had read my Manual of Horsemanship and knew the length a tail should be, so one afternoon I took the scissors to her Welsh section A.

Oh My......

I have known since that ear splitting moment when she next laid eyes on the pony that you don't trim M&Ms........

Which explains why I almost hyperventilate when people insist on clipping feathers off - I have a very deep seated 'leave well alone' gene........!

I would be absolutely furious!

Must confess though - when my daughters pony (who had the most magnificent tail) was needing a trim due to it trailing on the ground I tidied it up but couldn't get it quite straight, so it went up, and up, and up until it was above his hocks.......... The family still refer to this as "the tale of Puzzle's tail" and the scissors are still confiscated (14 years on)!!

Oh R2R, I am sorry, but I can't stop laughing at the thought of your pets' bad haircuts. Have you got any other animals liable to end up with shocking barnets?

All I can say is it will grow back... I did it once myself to a Section A with a sense of humour - I cut it wonky then had to go shorter and shorter to get it level at the bottom by which time... It ended up ON his hock at rest, so the little git decided to become a born again Arab and let everyone see what a numpty of an owner he had with his tail a good 4 inches above his hock he was carrying it so high.

Ho!!!!!!!!! I would be livid. Firstly I love my long tails, fetlock length, but all my horses have a gay tail carriage which results in them being carried at hock height when working. Secondly how dare she cut it without asking!!!!!!!!!!!

I would kill her. Someone once cut a bridle track on my horse, I don't think she ever spoke to me again, I was so rude to her.

R2R: suggestion.... keep all under 18yrs away from your animals, especially if they have scissors or sticky fingers!!

I'd be furious about the tail and the dog's head... though the latter is....

...... a bit.....

funny!!!! ;-)

I would be fuming over the fact she did it without asking, I think hes your horse so its up to you how long his tail is or isnt. I love my horses long flowing tail, it rests just above his fetlocks but he does hold it higher when worked.

Bedlam- Haha! I would slap anyone who cut my Sec B's tail even her loaner lol, I drilled it into them that M&Ms are left as is :D

Soooo Annoying!!! Even though my old lad is neither a M n M or arab he NEVER had a short tail!!! Fashion??? S@d that. I would rather have a horse who could use what beauty had given him against flies etc! Hopefully it'll grow back sooner rather than later.

I would be hopping!!! Pooor lad

:D :D :D

Who decides how long a tail should be, anyway? I think pulled manes look dorky, except when they're plaited, and since my pony's mane spends about 1/20th of its time plaited, and the rest being used as nature's umbrella and fly shield, I figure I'd rather not have him look like a dork 19/20ths of the time, and instead, I enjoy alternative plaiting methods to traditional hunter plaits! :D

And short tails...oh my...nothing quite so sad-looking as a tail too short to do its job!

Never quite understand the point of pulling a happy hacker's mane, and then making him wear a fly fringe which he promptly manages either to lose, or to have hanging below his jaw like a strange beard...

An acquaintance of mine went on holiday, leaving her beautiful "hairy" to be looked after by a competant horsy "friend". When she returned...........he had been HOGGED!!!!! Apparently, the (ex!) friend noticed how difficult it was to keep mane, tail and feathers clean, so thought she'd help out! I kid you not!

:eek::eek::eek:

In that case, murder would be on the cards. I cannot stand interfering people:mad:

OP, the only thing you can do is tell the girl that you will be the one to do any trimming etc in future.

It's YOUR horse, and so no one else's business how long his tail is!!!

My mother did a "Rosie" on one of my shetlands once. She was helping me do a tidy up of all of them and we had bathed them and done their hooves, started trimming one and she started trimming the other and erm... she has never touched them with a pair of sissors again! She stood back, her mouth dropped and she couldn't apologise enough. I turned round to find her with a great lump of hair in one hand and poor little C's tail in the other trying to figure out ways of sticking it back on! It has grown back since and is currently dragging on the floor! He looked very very silly for a long long time (she had cut just below the dock!). Little C was not impresed with the whole thing either and was really huffy for ages.

Trimming is a funny thing though isn't it. Personally I like my tails to be just off of the floor for all of them. The shetties have natural manes (obviously)and the big man has a short one (he looks better as a punk for some reason). I never touch any forelocks and I hate bridle patches as they must be so itchy for the horse when they start growing back. Whats wrong with a quick tidy as you put the bridle on? I leave all tails natural as well. I just think that a nicely plaited tail shows a judge that you have put effort in to your presentation and I have seen far too many dodgy tail jobs in the past!

I know some people who have fits if their tails are long and have them at the hock. I don't know, but I am just glad for all the horses mentioned that hair does grow!

I used to do a 1/2 inch bridle path on my trad, you couldn't see it under the headpiece and I trimmed it every other day to prevent a tuft. She had so much hair it would bunch under the bridle and she was very sensitive in the poll so she hated me playing with it. Her mane however was nearly 2 feet long, her tail was thick and floor length and her feathers fluffy and silky.

I have reacently found out unfortunately that her next loaner decided she would look better as a show cob, hogged, pulled and shaved. AAARGHHHH. She was a happy hack and not the best example of her breed anyway. Her long mane helped disguise the fact that she didn't really have much of a neck and the feathers helped cover up the fact she had soup plate feet but not quite enough bone to pull them off. Poor thing looked rediculous.

oh dear poor horse! a least they grow maybe you should get her to ask you when she wants to do something like that

I cut my loan horse's tail one day when I was in a hurry and took far too much off - it was well above his hock. He had such a magnificent tail too! His owner was unimpressed but saw the funny side in the end, and it did grow back.
He was a bit of a fashion victim that year as we think the groom who clipped him must have been drunk at the time, or at least very hung over (he was an alcoholic) and his blanket clip had some rather interesting lines!

I don't touch anyone elses horses hair anymore.... having been asked to do a cut trim then being made to feel very guilty about it being too short .... everyone can just do their own now :)
