We, as horse lovers MUST support this group in France

How the hell did those Dartmoor Hill Ponies get to Maurs?

Where were those at the ports supposedly checking paperwork for minimum values?

This country, and DEFRA are a ****ing joke..:mad:

it makes me SO mad that these poor souls have travelled from Dartmoor to the south of france, to be sold on to a Skins Dealer from Italy?...

THIS IS NOT RIGHT!!!

And it's about time this country, as a collective whole, grew a pair and stood up for what is right.............

There are at least 1000 members on HHO...how many of us actually ACTIVELY campaign against this shyte?
Come on everyone, do your bit.
If just a small percentage did something, it would make a huge difference, believe me.

These people do an enormous amount for UK markets/sales

and ERF in France..on the frontline...

Thanks for posting NP, that makes shocking reading. Horrendous what those hill ponies must have gone through, makes a mockery of the whole minimum value thing doesn't it.

Ok, so I am no expert on this subject but do all livestock get treated so badly or is it only horses? Is there just less or no regulations when it comes to horse sales for meat etc?

To be honest it makes me feel quite sick but then I can't stand the thought of horses being treated in this way at all. I don't understand the mentality of people who just seem to have no thought or caring for other animals but I sometimes feel we are helpless to stop it when the authorities in charge do not seem to give a *****!

I think to start with there should be more regulations brought in in this country in respect of over-breeding. It's getting ridiculous. Also, I think ports need to crack down on shipments of equines - why can't it be stopped completely? What are the 'rules'?

Just proves that DEFRA and the Port Authorities couldn't give a Rat's Arse doesn't it?

And the Transporters who take them over in the first place are total arsewipes...

The TPA seriously needs shaking up...BIG TIME

ladyt25...here is the legislation as it stands today..

The certificate of minimum value (valid for
one month only from the date of issue)
must be obtained from one of the valuers on
the list held by the Department and the
Department must be satisfied that the pony is
intended for breeding, riding or exhibition and
that it is not of less value than:
£300 – Ponies over 122cm (12 hands) and
up to 147cm (14.2 hands);
£220 – Ponies up to 122cm (12 hands)
(other than ponies of the Shetland breed up
to 107cm (19.2 hands));
£145 – Ponies of the Shetland breed up to
107cm (10.2 hands). .

How disgusting. Those ponies looked absolutely pathetic. I have to say it doesn't surprise me that they are from the UK. I have to wonder how many more are from the UK that they didn't know about?

We have a responsibility to the equine community in the UK to prevent this happening - I'm sure that most of us on here would agree. Collectively we are supposed to be a nation of horse lovers, yet we are allowing this to happen to one of our native breeds. Shocking.

Thank you for these links, I shall definately be looking at ways to help ERF and will publicise this info.

There was a group set uo a while back campaigning about the tri-partite agreement, was there not a letter to send to local MP's? Given that this was before the election, perhaps some one can dig out the letter and we could all copy and send it to our current MP's. It may also be worth someone drafting a seperate letter about the minimum value not being adhered to, again for all to send to their local MP's. It may also be worth coying the letters and taking them to RC's etc for others to send.

I had no idea horses sold for as little as £2.50!! it's disgusting that these poor animals who have probably never had any love anyway have to end thier lives like this.

That would be great if someone can get a copy of the original draft. Alternatively, I'm sure that we could come up with something fairly basic but coherent to send.

According to Defra, they are aware of 'allegations' of this nature but appear to be confident that their checks at ports are working(!) At Stranraer they take the 'check to see if it has four legs then wave them on through' approach, I remember. Do they only take action if they suspect the ponies to be sold for human consumption rather than as part of the skin trade?

http://www.defra.gov.uk/foodfarm/farmanimal/welfare/transport/horse/index.htm

"Exports

We know that there is considerable public concern about allegations that British ponies are exported to the continent for human consumption. We have not found, or been given, any evidence that ponies are regularly exported in this way. On the other hand, we cannot dismiss the possibility that there may be occasional incidents. Our random checks and surveillance at ports would, we are sure, pick up any routine trade, but it is more difficult for our staff to direct their efforts so as to pick up isolated incidents. We will continue to work with local authority staff to ensure that animals leave pony sales in suitable vehicles and accompanied by the correct documentation. This action is supplemented by checks at ports, which are targeted on times when ponies might be exported, such as the period after the pony sales."

How much suffering could have been avoided if these ponies had been slaughtered in the UK?

Also, UK racehorses being shipped to French meat yards:

I bought a 6 month old foal last november that was purchased from the new forest sales, there were 4 foals and an older pony from the same breeder as my boy and from the same sale at beaulieu road on the equine section website a week later. I was gutted to see them :(

I really don't know PF? :(

Those tiny, little ponies came from Dartmoor on the second weekend in October...trawled to the Sth France..."dodging" Customs, to then be sold to an Italian "fur dealer" because they are skewbald/spotted..and endure another 15 hour journey to be killed...and because they are only needed for their pitifull little skins, no-one will bother to either feed or water the poor little feckers....
shocking...

I believe HHO/and Horse and Hound, which promotes itself as the UK's best selling Equine Mag, should get it's act together and STRONGLY protest for the Ports to sort out/adhere to current legislation......

i wont hold my breath.....

As going by the inane crap that is posted on here on a daily basis...and by browsing through the mag that i no longer buy, as it's so lightweight it needs a brick on it to keep it from blowing out the newsagents door, it may well be a very long time before the horse owning Joe Public gets their head round the REAL world.

I have been told that at certain ferry ports leaving a certain island, the best you will get is a look at the PPs and a look through the slats/windows of the lorry to confirm how many/that they are horses.

Well pressure from the members here on the forum might just encourage H & H to feature this appalling trade in the magazine, I for one would like to see them draw attention to the plight of these and all the other ponies who face the same journey.

I am a lurker more than anything but agree strongly with the comment regarding potters. I remember seeing an article that a abbatoir was being proposed to be built next to a market. I was in favour. I know all about the journeys from a small island and i also know that we see poor animals on rescue sites and ship them all the way back here, putting them through hell twice :(

It would be great if HHO would do a report on the sad reality of horse transport and unenforced legislation evident from those articles. I expect someone from Equine Rescue France would be more than willing to speak to someone from the magazine about this issue.

Clearly, something has to be done. I for one do not believe that the ponies photographed were an isolated few.

SICK SICK SICK..

What is best to do to help? I have donated £40 to them but dont have anything else at the moment. Each pay day Instead of buying myself a treat or my horses the newest bridle or something I will be donating some money.

Tell me this, I dont mean to sound horrid but sureley it would be better to buy the cheap ponies and horses ourselves and then have them taken to potters or something to ensure they have had a proper end. This may sound horrid to some but at least they wouldnt suffer.

Agree 100% TS....and no, the little scraps featured are no way an isolated few...this goes on week in, week out.

Horse and Hound should grow a pair, get an investagative journo out there and get things moving...

I personally, have spoken to someone from H&H about the EIA outbreak earlier this year..i told the young lady about the shonkie dealer/s who were importing these animals....and still are...has anything changed? Has it buffalo...what is the point? H&H is, sadly, these days a toothless tiger.......

I don't think you sound horrid, its an eminently sensible idea imo, but you only have to look at the meat man thread to see that too many people think to do this you have to hate ponies, when actually the opposite would be true.

What about WHW ? (ILPH that was) don't they keep trying to strengthen the regulations? I think one thing that really needs to be tackled is the overbreeding that goes on unchecked and isn't it about time that animals exported from this country should be slaughtered here, never mind that continentals apparently prefer their meat fresh! Sorry, I won't go on, I hate this trade and I could'nt even look at the links. If anyone can unearth the letter to send to MPs that would be great.

Indalo............i have, and still do, just this.

But, sadly for me, i have received a fair few abusive pm's on here for doing just that.

sadly, some on here tend to forget those that have gone on to lead fabulous normal lives..

But....i have a very thick skin..;)
