Received a mahoosive vets bill yesterday, of which the majority was Pancake's hospitalisation...

I'm not stupid, and know that hospitalisation and round the clock care doesn't come cheap, but one of the sundry items I was charged for was 225g of vaseline - anyone care to guess how much they charged me for that?!






£9.88!!!!!!

No wonder I'm broke!!
 
my vet charged £8.20 for a bit of elastoplast last year to secure my mares vetrap/dressing after she went through the fence

It was only 4" x 5" in size, robbing so and sos!
 
I so should have engaged my brain and taken my own tub there for them to use!

I hesistated to open the envelope even - it was thick which is always a bad sign

The entire bill was 3 pages long, and I don't even want to think about, let alone repeat, the final total!!!
 
they ad a zero onto everything!!! Our vets were really honest the other day and said that if we bought our foaly enemas from them they'd be about £10 each OR we couold get the same brand from chemist for only £3 each max (ended up being £1.50!!!)
I would definately query it tho.....
 
Oh my gosh....vets wonder why more people are getting horse supplies on line. is it any wonder when they charge soo much for vaseline??

We all know emergency care cost a lot and i think all horse owners are happy to pay for a job well done. I hope you horse is now ok.

I am dreading mine for Robin. I reckon it will pay for his holiday flight (First Class) to the UK for him and his wife. Mind, I did almost drop the business end of his ultra sound thingy the other day, wonder if he would have charged me for an $8000 piece of equipment?

I buy syringes, needles, depocillin, betadine, enemas, blah, blah, blah at my local farm store. My vet laughs when he's doling kit out and I'm saying "Got that, got that, got that..."

He confiscated my vaseline

.....says it is the work of the devil and forbids it anywhere near my horses.....use gel, or zinc oxide instead he said.


How is Pancake doing now? I just LOVE that name, how on earth did you come up with that?
 
OK I win, guess how much a syringe of Sedalin cost me (so my horse would keep still for the farrier)?

That included call out and consultation. Er... I phoned vet to say next time he was at the yard could I have a tube of Sedalin for said purpose above

PLUS - the tube he found after rummaging round the boot of his car looked like it had been sat on by a horse. The consultation was "Hello, how's it going? How's your horse? Won't keep still for the farrier? Yes well you can try the Sedalin, it may work it may not."

Anyone do better than that?

I am the same as you Enfys, my cupboard is extremely well stocked so that I can avoid having ANYTHING off the vet unless it is vital! If I need anything that has to come from the vet I usually try and get it from the other practice that we use -it is a non equine specific one so is marginally cheaper!
My mother works as a dispenser, and before the practice changed the rules about staff sales we were able to get most things at trade/wholesale prices

Pancake is doing great now -she was 4weeks old this week. Time flies! She is called Pancake as mum is Tortilla

Sedalin....took deep intake of breath. Regarding vets bills I have to admit expecting one huge bill a year. I don't insure as it isn't viable. I worked it out that its cheaper to pay 1 or 2 big vets bills (my last one was £2200 2 years ago) every 12-24 months than insuring my 5 every year.
After Toff reabsorbed first foal she was put on 100 days of regumate which cost a fortune. I found it on the internet for half the price but needed a prescription. Vet billed me £20 for writing the prescription!
