This came up on another forum (UDBB), and I was wondering how things compare over here. They were taking about spending over $500 dollars on a one off lesson/clinic. Which strikes me as excessive to say the least! So, what's the most you'd pay and with whom? I'd pay a fair amount for a lesson with Jean Bemelmans, but not THAT much

. Also for Richard White or Kyra K.

Nicole Werner was charging crazy prices for clinic places (she trains Edward Gal), but I heard a rumour that the organiser struggled to fill the places.

How much does Carl charge these days?

As I'm poor and my riding ability doesn't really warrent excessive amounts on lessons then at the moment I couldn't justify any more than I currently spend, which is £50 for 45 minutes. Even then I think that is a bit expensive for my needs but I reason that the trainer is so local that I save fuel money by not travelling to someone further even if they are a bit cheaper. I also only have a lesson once every 3-4 weeks rather than once a fortnight going on the basis quality rather than quantitiy!

$500 for a lesson is outrageous!

the most i would pay for a private lesson would be £60.

i know there are more expensive people out there but i really don't think you can benefit unless you are already a super, super rider.

like the example you have of Edward Gal's trainer- for my level i don't need someone like that and it would be a waste of money.

Usually pay about £45 but can only afford once a month. Now she has a training bursary we are going to go mad and have a schoolmaster lesson at Talland which is £76 but it will be a one off.

I have paid £75 for a lesson with Stephen Clarke at a clinic, but got so much out of it and took a lot away with me (brain felt rather fried if I am honest so was glad had it videoed to remember everything)!

Thinking of having one with Isobel Wessels in a few months time...

But normally pay between £25 - £45 for a lesson.

I pay £60 for lessons with Emile Faurie, and they are frankly worth every penny. I had a one off lesson with Jennie Loriston-Clarke which was I think £70, and was very good. But once you start getting into the 100s......

Wonder how much Anky charges LOL

Eek... I bet it is more than my monthly mortgage payment.

I wonder how much Carl charges these days... Now he is someone I would love a lesson with, I bet you would come away buzzing with ideas.

Paid £50 for a lesson with Geoff Luckett a couple of years ago but I would have happily paid double. I went in a nervous jumper who coudn't do a damn thing right (

) and came out having jumped a big, tight course spot on with all the confidence in the world. He made me realise that actually I can do it and I gained so much and took so much away with me.

I have come to terms with £1/min rate & would struggle to justify anymore than that especially for a 'one off' lesson which I feel can be of limited use. I might push the boat out a teeny weeny bit further for another lesson with Tracie Robinson, I thought she was exceptional

I was going to pay £200 for a 2 day clinic with Meredith Micheals Beerbaum a few years back now but unfortunately it was cancelled partially due to lack of interest in the area. Normally I wouldn't pay any where near this amount, but I have always admired her riding and from bit of asking round everyone said she is also a very good instructor although rarely teaches. This was going to be a one off clinic in the UK for her as well.

Was really gutted to be honest that it was cancelled but hey I saved £200!!

We have paid £80 for lessons with Charles de Kunffy which again are very worthwhile but these tend to be treat rather than regular lessons.

Mr Worried regularly trains with Andrew Murphy £45 and Emile Faurie £60 - but incurr travelling costs to get to him so it usually ends up being £350 for a 2 day session!

Would love a lesson with Edward Gal!

at my level i'm happier to pay 25/hr for my instuctor - i don't think i'm a good enough rider to have lessons with a top trainer...
i have done the odd clinic with a famous rider but i find i get more from my instructor
wink.gif
esp as my horse rides v differently to how she looks from the ground (all people who ride her have been surprised!) - hence why i'm sticking with her as she knows us both well

I was told recently that a lesson with Ferdi is £120, at least that was what this person, a member of the Irish eventing squad so "forced" to have lessons claimed he had to pay

OK if you are wealthy or have generous owners who will foot the bill but neither applied in this case...

Bettina Hoy charges £90 but she is very good and always over-subscribed.

The most I've ever paid is for JLC, like halfstep, and I found her well worth it.

Im glad it was HS who had the JLC lesson, it was exhausting just watching, but boy was she good.

Ive paid up to £60 for 45 minutes. Just cant justify more.

kingsbarn have andrew gould clinics which are £80 for half an hour which i think is an awful lot!! but i think that price is due to his recent media publicity and being a trainer to KP

it was hard work! But very good. I don't think we stopped once in the hour, and the "walk break" was to work on walk pirouettes!

I must have looked like a beet.

You have GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!! Sorry, I like Andrew and all, but that is outrageous. I get a full hour (more, if the horse needs it, he doesn't clock watch) with Emile (who has a European medal!) for less than that.

I'm not riding a such a level that it would really be worth my while to pay so much for a top rider - my RI is one of the best dressage riders in Scotland and I pay £25 for 45 minutes.

I previously trained with one of Carl Hesters ex head girl and I think she was £40 for an hour which was reasonable and have paid about £50 to train with David Gatherer - and that was worth every penny!

£50 - £60 is probably the maximum I'd pay!

I paid £50 for 1.30hr with Tim Stockdale ( afew years ago) he was the ''grandest person'' i've ever had a lesson with! Worth every penny and happily do it again - but no more thanks, my purse doesn't stretch any wider!
Oh, and Nick Gauntlett (sp??) but that was a day clinic and i think £75 - had great fun if nothing more.

I paid £75 for a shared lesson with Emile Faurie. He was very nice but the only thing that really sticks in my mind is that he said Hugo was "without a doubt the most idle horse he has EVER taught" I smiled and thanked him for his ... err ...complement!

Not really a fan of one off lessons. Caroline Powell is £40 per lesson if you go to her and she brings my riding on ten times more than anyone else, plus gives lots of homework so you feel that you get a lot for your money.

Hi
Currently pay £25 and TBH is great as she really understands my boy(she rides at medium level) - not the most straightforward as people think to get best out of him, plus we are just run of mill riding club level.

However dont mind paying similar for lecture demos - have seen WFP, Funnels etc.

Not sure I would gain huge amounts more than what I get through my regular trainer as not really at high enough level. However I do always watch other people lessons - you can learn so much as well I find training you eye etc.

Andrew Gould is comming up this way and he is charging £80 for private 45 mins I beleive.

Caroline Powell and Ian Stark charged £60 I think for group lessons when up our way.

cheers .

Is that to do with venue hire too tho?
Cos for outsiders its £80 if you have Anna once youve paid to use the indoor.
But for 30 min sucks

Id love a lesson with Carl or Conrad....actually atm just some money for a lesson would be nice.

Currently the maximum I pay is £40 for 45mins with a 4* eventer, he is worth ever penny though.

I am umming about having some "specialist" dressage lessons though later on in mine and Lucky's "career" which are expensive, but by all accounts worth it!

I don't mind paying more as long as I am getting what I expect from it, though would draw the line at over £70 for a session.

Don't wish to offend but that seems extortionate and I wouldn't pay that tbh. Also half hour is barely long enough to get warmed up and working before the cool down.

I think they've added in a fair amount for arena hire and profit there

I pay my trainer £35 for 45 min and I get more out of each session with her than any one-off clinics i've done with "top" trainers, although maybe I haven't picked the right ones lol!

Saying that i'm going to a clinic in Feb, purely to get the new boy out to a scary dressage venue before I inflict fellow competitors with our airs above ground
grin.gif

I would happily pay up to £100 for a lesson with Carl, but anymore I think is a bt ridiculous x

I agree with everyones prices for hour/45 min lessons.
But what about clinics? I've been looking into these and can't decide if they are value for money or just a price hike.
Anyone got any clinic prices?

Ditto HS - that's outrageous! Regularly gracing the pages of the Sun, Now, Heat etc does not justify charging that kind of money for 30 minutes! Even if you factor in the cost of using facilities!

i currently pay one trainer £35 for 45mins, and the other £40 for 45 mins.
My clinician is only £20 an hour and he is a GP rider and trainer who comes from Spain to do clinics at mine.

I have previously paid £180-£200/hour (varied clinic to clinic) for Arthur Kottas and would happily pay that again for a top notch clinician. I am aiming for GP so i would take every opportunity to gain knowledge even if i had to live on baked beans for 6 months to do it!

for a regular trainer i couldnt justify more than £85/hour in order to go every month.
