The reason i dislike this type of "box"

i've seen a horse coming out through an iw trailer grooms door before, very scary, although i think it did actually get through somehow without too much assistance. maybe they should put double doors on that kind of box so the horse can fit through in an emergency

Oh I don't know, I reckon I would be a lot safer (read: my horse, other cars, the entire world) if i drove a small box like that than a big lorry.

Freak accidents can happen with any type of transport.

Cripers.

The 'box' of that type Pip went in had full size doors infront of the ponies before the grooms door. No way they could have got a leg over as it almost touched the ceiling.

BLIMEY!

Oh God that looks like the old style Equitrek trailers.

A friend had this happen a while ago with beastie coming through the grooms area also and out a door that size, still not sure he managed it but did manage to come out completely.

ditto that this type of incident are not restricted to this kind of box. My friends mare got both her front legs over the breast bar of our IW505.

My friend's 16.3 came out of an IW 505 jockey door the other day. Terrifying to watch. He was stuck for a while with his head through the door, his front legs over the breast bar and his back legs about 3' in the air. He managed to wriggle his body free and was in such a panic to get out forced his way out through the door - he's quite fine and I think it was his saving grace. He had tiny nick on one back leg and a graze on his face and nothing else, somehow. The side of the trailer was all buckled but went back to shape with the aid of tractor! It has been properly checked over and is fine too! My friend (trapped in there with him as she was just putting him on when it happened) was in a state for hours though and had to have several cups of tea and someone else to drive her home. (The horse had a lift on a different trailer)

I think things like this can happen in any vehicle and it's just bad luck, you can't go trying to risk assess all these things too much or you'd never go anywhere.

My 15hh also came thru an IW small door. She had been on the otherside of the trailer, with front ramp shut. She broke the breast bar (sheared it), knocked the other out the way, and jumped around so much she managed to get to 2 clips to come loose and escape - serious hissy fit! She hurt her leg and was never left alone in the trailer again!!!

Sends shivers down my spine when I hear about this kind of thing, makes me very reluctant to even want to transport a horse in anything in fear of the 'what if's'

Friends horse came out of the jockey door of her Sinclair last year and ended up over the boot of her car, so I don't think accidents such as those are isolated to Equitreks.

My Shettie went out the jockey door of my Bateson.....easily !!!!

Edited bit: We were parked up, and he'd extricated himself from his headcollar and opened the door which had a handle on the inside - so no damage done to him thank god!!

I've also seen a rather chunky 16.1hh escape through the jockey door of a IW HB510. She had been tied up in the trailer but decided she didn't want to go for a day out. Very scary to watch.

My friends horse went up and over the breastbar of a front facing lorry and got stuck upside down halfway through the door into the living. She had to be cut out and ended up in a cast at Potters Bar, but made a full recovery back to BSJA-ing.
I do believe that there are such things as freak accidents, and this would seem to be one of them.
Thank God the owner/driver was on the ball, otherwise it could have been alot worse.

I have had a similar incident in a front facing lorry, the mare got stuck with the front end in the living and back end over breast bar. Didn't have to cut her out as the lorry was possible to dismantle around her - very scary and left me with pretty much untransportable horse.

One of my boys got both front legs over the breast bar 4 times in space betwee loading him and getting our other horse in the trailor at the weekend! He has never done it before and dont know what got into him, he is a hw but my partner managed to lift him back over. So we had to put a leadrope under the breast bar so he couldnt get his head up enough to rear.
Thankfully we have a old rice trailor with a small jockey door at the side so there is no way he could hav got through it as I struggle and i'm of slim build
Was really worrying though seeing him dangling there, good job he had all his travelling gear on otherwise could have coused some real damage to himself the way he was thrashing round
We will be loading him last in future just incase he does it again

If this is the same story I heard about last week, it was a 3.5t rear facing wagon. Apparantly it happens a lot. They panic and jump over the breast bar possibly because of the window in the grooms door, seeing it as an exit and then get stuck in the small day living or come through the door. Ive seen these lorrys modified with no window at the back and also anti weave grills on the breast bar to make them more enclosed. Ive also heard it happen in Equitrek too.

My boss had an Equitrek and i was following her on the motorway to a show. The back door had been locked with a key but on the Equitreks they can still be opened on the inside. The door flew open and her horse was over the bar and trying to get out (exactly like the picture)

Thankfully i got her to pull over, we got him back into place and i tied the door closed. DREADFUL design - i wouldnt recommend one to anyone

I can't comment on all Equitrek models but I have a 2yo Showtreka which has an external bolt on the back door, so it cannot be opened accidentally from the inside. My old Sportstreka didn't have that modification and yes, my old horse did once unlatch it from inside. We put a bolt on smartish! I think they're terrific trailers and I would recommend them.

I'm not sure the trailer pictured is the one in the story - it seems to be parked in a field with another horsebox in the background, whereas the news story referred to a trailer being driven and having to pull over on the road. So we can't assume it was an Equitrek.
