Time to invest in new rugs this year s other ones got trashed last winter. Horse in question is a section d who feels the cold and drops weight, he's normally out on winter grazing in an exposed field with hedge shelter and turned away. This year he will be in full work and clipped out. I have the luxury of my own newly built stables this year and cant wait meaning he can stay home with my mare , he will be stabled at night and out during daytime. He will have access to hay and shelter too.
Thinking of a
250g turn out with a high neck
250g stable rug
200g under rug
Thermatex type rug for early autumn nights to double up as a travel rug
The idea is to layer up the rugs when it gets colder
Do you think this sounds enough?!
Normally have 2 turn outs one for when the other gets wet and a very old under rug that I can probably get another winter out of!
Thanks in advance

All depends on your horse and how much he feels the cold! Only you can know. Im not a good person to answer tbh, since my fine, thin skinned TB and hunter clipped youngster will only wear 100g rugs most of the winter and won't need anything more unless its howling a gale. Never had a horse that needsa lot of rugs, and mine live out 24/7.

I wouldn't bother to buy a stable rug tbh, unless your horse is particularly clean or you especially want to. Turnout rugs stand up much better to horses who lie in their own mess. I am happy to layer in the stable but for some reason like my horse to only wear one rug at a time in the field. Not sure why, really.

Buy a rambo. Get a 100g outer with detachable neck. Then buy a couple of different weight liners and you are done :). You can wash the liners throughout winter to freshen the rug up as they dry very quickly.

Personally i have two outer rambos (one 100g and one 0g) and i have a 100g and 200g liner so can make up most weights using just two outer rugs. Not cheap, but excellent value as they last.

Dont bother with stable rugs.

Don't tend to bother with stable rugs use outdoor rugs most of the time as they are much better than stable rugs. Get a couple of good ones and a few fleeces for underneath if needed.

Also wouldn't bother with stable rugs or thermatex type for the stable. I'd invest in a good quality rainsheet and then a 100g TO that can take liners and see how you go - if you need more weight buy a liner when you need it. Oh and don't get PE rugs, they leak and weight a bloody tonne. Look at Swish/Mark Todd/Weatherbeeta/Horsewear.

My lot have each the following

A rain sheet standard but can fix a neck if wanted.
A 100g as above
A200g as above
A standard neck heavy
A combo heavy which only comes out when it's below -1

I have a rain sheet neck
A medium weight neck for if and when they need them.

One of mine doesn't have a neck on as he gets too hot and then gets skin infections from rubbing.

They also have a 100g indoor rug each, 200g indoor, two fleeces each and a waffle each.

They don't use the indoors unless feilds are closed otherwise they live in their out door rugs.

The are warmer and it drys quicker when wet.

I have a varying selection of weights as I don't like to double up on rugs if I can help it.

2 X lightweights 0g detachable and fitted neck
2 X 100g detachable and fitted neck
1 X 200g fitted neck
1 X 300g detachable neck
1 X 400g fitted neck

I want to get a 200g that has a detachable neck too or just a standard one. They are all turnouts as they dont change rugs at this yard. I should really clean my stable rugs and sell them as i will never use them again.

I would get a rambo with liners if I could afford it but I can't and also my horse destroys anything expensive so I am not willing to take the risk. If he destroyed a set of rugs worth £300 I would be furious haha. Destroying a rug that cost me £30 I don't mind but he never has. He prefers the cheap rugs yay.

I have a TB and an ID x TB, they get hunter clipped. Most of my rugs are cheap ones, but have lasted well (it helps my two are fairly good at looking after their rugs):

Turnouts
No fill standard neck
100g standard neck
200g detatachable neck
250g standard neck
250g combo
300g standard neck
350g detachable neck
350g combo

Stable rugs
100g standard
200g detachable neck
300g combo
Plus a daft number of fleeces/ coolers etc!

Although I have the combos, they tend to live in the standard necks, unless it's rain for days on end or below freezing. This is the first year that they will use stable rugs - before the yard didn't do rug changes on the mornings they were turned out for me.
