The usual Yard A yard B question..

See the way I see it yard A is inadvertently restricted- coming in at 2pm means if you add up all the stables hours in a year it would actually be fairly similar to having 24/7 turnout in summer and two months on 3 day a week turnout?

Overall, perhaps, but I still prefer the thought of my horses being out for a period of time each day, rather than shut inside for four full days each week. From their point of view, they've got out and had a leg stretch at Yard A, whereas I doubt the horses at Yard B sit and total up their overall hours out when they're stuck in for a day at a time. However, I completely acknowledge that this is my personal preference, and that other factors will take precedence for other people. At the end of the day, the right choice is whichever of the two works better for the OP.

I was at a yard that had similar restrictions in winter and actually all the horses were quite happy and relaxed about the whole thing.

OP I'd be with yard B, you never know if everyone works it might be a bit busier in the evenings?

Yard B for me. I don't want my horse on DIY more than 15 minutes away from me. My horse is on a yard with restricted winter turnout and is quite content as long as everybody else is in as well.

Just a little update- I have now handed in my notice and will be moving to the new yard. The restricted grazing is just January and some of February, 3 days a week but NOT 3 days in a row. The stables are originally designed for shire horses that worked the farm, so are huuuuge for my 14.3hh boy. I think as long as he has food on the "in" days he should be happy, as he has plenty of room to move about!

Very very sad to be leaving where I am, but they have said I would be welcome back which is nice. I just can't wait until 24/7 turnout starts over summer....

Just an update - I bit the bullet and moved yard, turns out there is a lot more grass than I anticipated and no mud (yet!) so very pleased with the grazing!

Also- the people are so lovely! at least 3 days a week my stable gets mucked out for me before I get to the yard, by the mystery mucking out fairy- and I love it!

Horse is so much tidier in his massive stable, where 11 bales of shavings only covers half of the stable floor!

Hacking not asss good as previous, but I was spoilt for it where I was and can easily trailer over there whenever.

Best of all - I've not had to share the school with anyone yet!

Very glad to hear you're happy - I always wonder what happen on these A vs B threads. Be interested to hear how you feel in March or so too - nosy so and so that I am!

I am glad your happy at the new place it looks very nice and tidy, I don't think a few days a week in the stable for 2 months of what's can be the worst time of year is much, 24/7 turnout in summer is really ideal you will definitely enjoy that as will your horse:)

I have my own place and when it's really bad my horses stay in; they don't care they would rather be in with room service than out in the rain :) good luck in your new yard shortest day soon, then the countdown begins!
