Thanks to 6 cyclists racing through one of our bridlepaths causing the horses to bolt and me to have a half speed collision with the tarmac, three weeks ago.
I learnt today that I now require an ACL reconstruction in my knee of which looks like a minimum of 6 months until I can ride again :( Gutted doesn't come close to how I feel right now. Especially with how we were getting on in our first BD season.
But I am extremely grateful in the fact I know it could have been alot for us both. Afterall we are still here.
Please can I ask you all to check your hats. Mine was 3 to 4 years and the concussion is still causing me issues. But thank god for my body protector too!!
I shall continue to enjoy your posts and hope the winter flies by.

Hey, sorry to hear about your accident and subsequent troubles.

Here's hoping you mend PDQ, and good advise re hat and protector. Always make sure my mare booted and high-vized up, never worry so much about ones self...

Chin chin xx

Sorry to hear about your accident. I had an ACL reconstruction in September last year, I rode after 6 months. Surgeon said I could ride sooner but my horse went lame!
I invested in some Sprenger stirrups (I got the bow balance ones) and they definitely make a difference to your joints.

Gosh sorry to hear that. Someone at our yard had to that operation as well, has taken her a while as wasn't originally diagnosed as needing that.

Keep us posted with progress and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

oh bum :( hopefully they can fix it really soon, so that you are recuperating over winter and don't miss loads of the season next year.

can you ride without stirrups on a sensible horse? I was itching to get back into the saddle after my accident I can imagine how frustrated you feel. xx

I'm sorry to hear that. I had an ACL reconstruction 5 weeks ago and provided my 7 week check is good and I keep up with Physio I can ride again at 12 weeks.

Personally I'm leaving it longer but only because my mare's now on loan and I'm at uni. Wishing you a speedy recovery. If you have any questions just ask!

Thank you so much! That's a real help to have someone to call on.

Unfortunately as my horse was also injured in the accident, we all thought he was worse and I'd have to wait for him to heal, but *touch wood* he's almost there. I need / want to do some build up work to get him back used to cyclists and take him back to the bridlepath where it all happened, so as he trusts me so much I think I shall rough him off for the winter, and then hopefully by spring I'll be at my three month stage and can start some build up lunge work with him. So he'll be having a holiday too.

I just really feel for my mum, as she too was involved, but neither were injured, but now she'll have the awful weather to fight with and I won't be able to help her with the four horses (we rent our own land) as after my op I've been told I can't go on uneven ground etc. Just hope I can get a cancellation appointment to hurry the op up! :( (sorry - I'm feeling sorry for myself - I blame the concussion!)

Oh no, poor you and your horse. Did the cyclists even bother to stop? It is an issue where we are, with the cyclists' being totally, seemingly, unaware of the horses. The trail bikers are a lot better and do pass you carefully.

Fingers crossed for the cancellation and hope to see you out and about in the Spring/summer. :)

Thank you. They stopped in the fact that I was on the floor and the house owners were calling me an ambulance, and my mum jumped off her horse and dumped him on a cyclist whilst she went to get my horse. But they haven't left any details what so ever.

So I'm struggling through at work against medical advise, because I've just taken on a new mortgage and can't pay that on Sick pay until I can track down this six men to claim for loss of earnings :( We've got a few places to go and ask and the only other option I can see is the world of facebook to see if anyone knows or heard anything.

Sorry to hear you are out of action.

Out of interest, are you attempting to claim from the cyclists directly? Or is this from your own insurance? I'm a cyclist as well as a horse rider, so would be interested to know. As i'm sure you know, cyclists aren't technically allowed on footpaths, only bridleways. Seems bonkers if you ask me.

Have work got a support line you can call? I am lucky, here we have a membership to a support network, where you can get legal/counselling etc etc advice -Legal could be good here. Also, cycling clubs on FB is good as you say to see if anyone is prepared to say anything. Thoughts are with you.

I had my ACL reconstructed 2 weeks ago tomorrow, been told 3-6 months before riding. If you can do it, get some physio pre-surgery, my consultant told me the stronger and more mobile the knee was before surgery, the better the outcome after. I had to wait 2 months for surgery (so my knee actually bent and the swelling had gone down) - apparently doing it asap doesn't always give such a good result.

Feel free to ask if you want to know anything, although I can only help on the recovery bit as i'm not that far along!

Sorry to hear this, I always enjoy reading you updates on facebook. Hope you're feeling better as soon as possible. If there is anything positive to take (and I appreciate it's hard to see), at least we're just coming in to winter, so you won't be missing out on riding in the summer.

Take care,

Hi, I tore my cruciate back in mid July, I was told by private consultant that they rarely do reconstructs now and that it is often just as good to do physio to build your hamstrings to 'take over' from the cruciate, also shorter recovery time too. Took a long time for the swelling to go down and started physio about a month after fall, gently at first but definitely ramped up now and the knee feels stronger every day. Have also been told not to walk on uneven ground for a while but am pootling about field skipping that out. Just starting to think I will be getting back on a horse soon, need to clip woolly beast first and I am investing in a taller mounting block to reduce strain on knee when mounting. Good luck - its horrid and boring - but you will get there, just be kind to yourself

Thank you, it's a great help having others that have been there to talk too - I'm actually starting pre-surgery physio tomorrow, and am sadly excited about it. (That will be 3 weeks and 4 days post accident). As I often just want to bend it and really can't. Fingers crossed I get an earlier op date than they've currently mentioned

Thank you - unfortunately I did quite a bit last winter competition wise and lessons, so the weather makes no differences to me. Just feel for my mum as she'll be stuck doing the four horses on her own if the rubbish weather :(

Unfortunately I have completely lost my ACL, and due to my age, the fact I ride and several other points, my consultant said he wants me to have the operation. He did explain that the muscles can take over, but my knee is so unstable at the moment, even though it's stiff and doesn't bend much, my lower leg consistently twists hence them not giving me the choice.
Good luck with you recovery

That sounds nasty . . . very glad you are both (relatively) OK . . . best of luck with the surgery and subsequent recovery - please keep us posted on how you get on.

Hi, one other thing that helped me a lot was a cryotheraphy cuff (prob spelt wrong) which I got online from a physio company which allows you to really ice the leg to get swelling down and helped me a lot when it just felt stiff and hot. Physio recommended it, cost about £70 but well worth it. Good luck!

Really sorry to hear the news :(
Want to take up internet chess for a few months? I'm horseless again as well.

I'm sorry to hear that PM :( I'm not good at Chess!! Shame I have no facilities otherwise you would have been one of very very few I would have allowed near my boy to ride him. But unfortunately I feel since the accident, I'm going to have a lot of confidence building to work on with him and myself.

There is some good news though, I started physio this morning of which went rather well and then I got "the call", my operation date!! And it's the 31st October, not January as previously threaten, so I could (fingers crossed) be back riding by February!!

Hugs to you as all sounds dreadful! :( Wish you a speedy recovery! :)

I had an ACL reconstruction about 20 months ago! I honestly don't think about my knee at all now! If anything it's better than my "good" knee! :)

My surgeon said to me that the fact I was pushing my knee (sensibly) to do as much as possible helped! I had 120° bend by 10 day check up and didn't use crutches at home from day 3 (used them out and about so people wouldn't shove me/slam doors in my face etc).

Physio makes such a difference (although mine almost seemed to enjoy inflicting pain) and they really do work every part of you! Even my intercostals hurt (between ribs ones, probs spelt wrong).

I've got a cheap version of the sprenger stirrups and they really do help!

Trust me the time will fly by. I can't believe it's been nearly 2 years since I did my knee (ski race accident).

Feel free to PM me also if you want any advice/ have any questions! :)

Make sure you follow the rehab plan set out by your surgeon and physio as there are a couple of different ways of fixing ACLs and also several different rehab plans depending on the surgeons preference.
I was told no weight bearing at all on bad knee for 2 weeks, then weaning of crutches over next 4-6 weeks. I also had a knee brace I had to wear 24/7 for 6 weeks.
But I know a few other people who have had it done and they all seem to have slightly different variations on when to put weight on it and what to do and not to do.

Have you had any joy with tracking down the cyclists?

I wish you a swift recovery. I haven't had your injury but do know how frustrating it becomes when you feel fine in yourself but are physically restricted.

Just wondered if arc equine could be of any use to help the recovery period? I have no personal experience but here has consistently been good things reported on it on this forum, partly helped by the owners frank and open answers. Just a thought!

At least you can use the time to plan your next season. Perhaps you could organise some friends or family to give your mum some days off as well?

Thanks everyone, you really are all helping keep a smile on my facebook. Did my physio exercises last night and again this morning and am pretty impressed by the difference so far in just one day, so fingers crossed a can get good flexion before my operation to help shorten the recovery time!

This intrigues me Firefly as I was allowed to weight bear from as soon as I woke up. No brace or anything and was encouraged to get off crutches as soon as possible? He said do as much as you can from wherever you feel ready, but don't run until physio says so.

What graft did you have? Maybe that affects rehab program? :)

Hi,
I had a Hamstring tendon graft and 3 stitches in my lateral meniscus.
I know about 7 or 8 people who have had it done and some of them had rehab like me and others were more like yours.
When I asked my surgeon how they choose a rehab plan he said its basically down to that surgeons personal preference.
I know that there is an ACL reconstruction register where they are collecting information on different grafts and rehab to see if long term there's any extra benefits from doing things one way or another.
:-)

I had hamstring graft too and meniscus repair. Who knows. :D I find our interesting how different surgeons recommend different rehabs.

Also down to the individual I suppose, without the MRI we would never have picked up the ACL as the rest of my knee was so solid that the physio tests for ACL tear came up negative. I had also been walking on it for 4 weeks before finding out anything was actually wrong so had no swelling when op came around.

I went to A&E the following morning after snapping my ACL and was told it was just sprained, a sports therapist also said the same a week later.
It was only when I went to my GP for a sick note for work that she said I needed an MRI and it was found.
Sorry if this has hijacked the OPs thread!
