I had a thought the other day when glancing through for sale ads.

My horse was sold a few months ago, while I had her she had a bizzar lameness, turned out it was only mud fever (during a very dry june?) any way insurance then excluded her entire hind leg.

When her new owners come to insure her, (as i provided her full vets history) therecitaly this exclusion should carry on through, as under any policy all known history should be declared.

If I was to buy another horse, I would want to know its history however if you didnt decalre this to the insurance, and a claim was made, then subsequently it was found out you knew about an exsisting claim on this area of the horse, technicaly they can ask for their money back.

Makes you wonder if you could ever buy a horse which has many exclusions so its not worth buying/insuring.

perhaps a way around this would be to find out about its current exclusions that way you dont know of vet history but it may give you a general idea?

sorry ramdon thoughts!

Was thinking about this the other day. My friends just insured her gelding but has no idea of his past medical history. Has said on the insurance form that (to her knowledge) everything is ok. If this proves not to be the case, would the policy be void or not?

Mm, well if I was buying a new horse and had it vetted and the owners didn't say anything about past problems or treatment I would in all honesty insure it as completely OK.

That is one reason why insurance doesn't come into cover until 14 days have passed.

you need to read your policy carefully. My horse was vetted (5 stage) before purchase and he had conjunctivitis. this was initially excluded on my insurance, but following a visit by my vet 4 weeks later - all was well and he wrote to insurance company and this was reinstated.

Years ago I had a horse with a check ligament injury - the whole leg was excluded initiallly, but after a period of 6 months they reinstated everything except liagment problems with that leg.

You need to liase witht he insurance company at every stage and ask how to get things reinstated.
