Things horses only do on the screen

I love a good wild life documentary but it’s only when you watch one on wild horses , you realise how Bloomin’ embellished they all are. I’m pretty sure wild horses don’t neigh the vast majority of the time and so various other animals don’t behave exactly how they are portrayed. Also none of these animals are usually followed closely by a full orchestra 😀

One thing that annoys me about the wild horse documentaries (and fiction) that I've seen is that the filmakers inevitably frame stallions as the main protagonists of the films. Mares are secondary characters. It reinforces the paradigm of misogyny and male dominance. Nevermind that horse society doesn't work like that. The stallions might have the spectacular fights, but the mares decide where the herd goes.

While I'm at it, Facebook shows me these 'things you might be interested in' posts from photographers who follow mustangs in the Western US. These people know the bands, give them names, etc. The vast majority of photos are of stallions. Once in a while, you get mares, but the stallions take centre stage.

When is someone going to write a book or make a film about wild horses that's about mares?
