My pet hate: people who have a different bit in the horses mouth every month
faracat, can I just pick you up on this, you keep arabs don't you? Is this mare an arab and is it a trait that arabs suffer from (girth galls). Its just that YO has spent a small fortune chopping and changing her girths for her arab due to this, she has now found the perfect one but I just wondered whether this was a common occurence in arabs?
Yes, the mare in question is an anglo-arab and she has very fine fur (lovely metallic sheen in the summer) and thin skin.
When I had her freezemarked, the Farmkey lady was telling me that she adjusts the length of time that she holds the markers on the horse by the breed. She said that arabs need the markers held on for the shortest time.
I have found (girth wise) that leather girths that are cut out/shaped around the elbows, coupled with a real sheepskin (leather still attached to the wool)cover work best. I also have two covers, which I swap, so I always have a clean one, as old sweat will cause rubs.
