things that you hate!

People who think that their horses enjoy a 'lay-in' on a Sunday!!!
People who do not feed enough hay to last night
Over bitting instead of schooling and using leg properly
Shoddy management in general, why don't they understand routine is important!
And I agree with all the ones about turnout, I really am sounding intolerant and judgemental!!! :-)

faracat, can I just pick you up on this, you keep arabs don't you? Is this mare an arab and is it a trait that arabs suffer from (girth galls). Its just that YO has spent a small fortune chopping and changing her girths for her arab due to this, she has now found the perfect one but I just wondered whether this was a common occurence in arabs?

Yes, the mare in question is an anglo-arab and she has very fine fur (lovely metallic sheen in the summer :) ) and thin skin.

When I had her freezemarked, the Farmkey lady was telling me that she adjusts the length of time that she holds the markers on the horse by the breed. She said that arabs need the markers held on for the shortest time.

I have found (girth wise) that leather girths that are cut out/shaped around the elbows, coupled with a real sheepskin (leather still attached to the wool)cover work best. I also have two covers, which I swap, so I always have a clean one, as old sweat will cause rubs.

When I rode an arab I had this same problem and It may be old fashioned but a mohair string girth worked wonders

I think the one other thing that is developing into a pet hate is people who use your things.

I am pretty easy going and am always the first to say, if you need to borrow 'x' help yourself, but just put it back, I have had a lot of things go walkies, but I am still happy to let people use the 'non perishable' things. What I am having difficulty with at the moment is someone who has not got their own hay, I have a full winter supply of it and was asked if she could buy a bale off me while she sorted some out for herself, true to her word she paid me for it, which was fine, but now she has asked for another bale (which I let her have) but letting people buy from my winter supply is not the same as them actually replacing it, I will have to do that myself which means inconvenience to me, plus I am very picky about where I get it. I will have to put a stop to it, which will make me seem mean :(

I suppose my bug bear is that people should make sure they have their own stuff and not rely on other people, I don't.

Edited to say: I don't want to say no, but I really have to safeguard it for my 2 :(

The girl who thinks its ok to leave her horse in untill luch time with no water, hay and all its (tiny) bed dirty so it cant eat that . Same person copying what I do with my horse without knowing the reasons behind it .
I'm fairly not bothered on turn out when hacking, its chill out time as long as the tack fits and is being used appropreatly who cares but I do think that when competing people should make the effort just because of all the effort that has gone in to organising it.

Interesting, thanks for that, she will be interested to know its not just her girlie then :D I think she as a similar set up to the one you described now and all seems fine, but bless her they came up so quickly and I dread to think about the money she spent trying to find the right girth for her :D

Oooops, I need to hang my head in shame, I went out with shavings in the tail this morning (sorry abino)!!! The rest of our turnout was smart, I wear my hi viz coat, wash my tack (including bit) after every ride, has my halo been re-instated? :) :) :)

Horses not brushed properly before being ridden
Horses that are over-bitted because its the trend to have a certain bit - in my day it was a snaffle during the week and a pelham for hunting!
Horses feet not trimmed regularly - particularly broodmares and retired horses that I see at work sometimes with their feet in a real mess
People who blame the horse when its the fault of their bad riding
"Pony Club" kicking and chicken wing arms!

I sound like a grumpy old wifey!!!

Not making an effort to plait up for dressage unless said horse is a traditional cob/native type

Fluffy native Ponies/shetlands in rugs - they really don't need them!!

People who interfere

People who gnaw away at your confidence

Untrimmed hooves (especially retired horses/ponies) that are long over due

Rude people

Not wearing hi-viz

People who don't understand why you keep your natives out 24/7 SHOCK HORROR!!

(1) Any behaviour that puts the horse, handler / rider or the general public in danger (dealing with horses is risky enough, why add to it).

(2) Any behaviour that puts the horse in unecessary pain (some pain is unavoidable, for example vaccinations).

Children on ponys that have gag bits in, standing martingale the works to stop it from going forwards but has a pair of massive spurs on and a whip!! And people having horse and not looking after them!! The list is endless :0)

I hate the fact that you can barely find a plain cavesson nose band any more, it is all flashes and grackles etc. Drives me bonkers!

People who see the heavy breeds and think they are plods, Fany is bombproof but she is not a plod.

People who use all the gadgets rather that teach their horses properly.

People who allow poor manners on the ground.

Jumping in standing martingales!

And my biggest one, people who think that one size fits all with horses, just because you do it one way does not make that the right way for some one else's horse. Eg. I will be clipping Fany although she doesn't work hard the reason being that she grows an extremely thick coat and gets very itchy, scratching until she makes herself sore. So she will be clipped.

i hate it that people don't know how to shut a gate behind them. especially when it's my horses in the field. (all have to go thro my field to get to theirs).
also people who say they can't afford to buy any hay for their horse- WHAT:

We use big round bales of hay and straw at the yard, at it really riles me when people pull some off to use, then leave it laying on the floor, and others just walk over it, or dogs pee on it! If you pull it off but dont need it, put it on the top of the bale so it stays clean!! Its not difficult!

i hate how people think that just because your horse isnt hunting or competiting all winter that they shouldnt be fully clipped, hate it when people watch you tidying the muck heap then dump the wheelbarrow of cr*p without chucking it up!
hate ignorant liveries especially when they have just moved to the yard not a way to make new friends
people who leave the tackroom door wide open when they go for a hack, at least its not their tack that could get stolen
people who think its okay to have their horse stabled overnight but are too lazy to get out of their bed in the morning, so come up at lunch time turn out for an hour ride and then put horse back in stable

People who leave gates and stable doors open.
Riders ( and joggers) who dont wear high Viz out hacking.
Kids wearing spurs
Badly fitting and filthy tack
people who dont put stuff away
feed bowls that never seem to get washed out
Agressive handling and riding
and people who seem to have all the gear but absolutely no idea!!!

to name but a few!

sorry but 'people who do not oil hooves before taking horse out'?!!!!

Hoof oil is the devils work. =o/
my only major pet hates are

FAT HORSES! and the phrase BAREFOOT.. they are unshod.. not barefoot.. and they are not feet.. they are hooves..

People that don't know how to use a broom and leave stuff/buckets all over the yard. Such a mess!!!!

And number one pet hate= no hats when riding

Basically I don't care, as long as horse is happy and healthy who am I to judge????

Only thing I don't care for is Horses being branded dangerous when the issue is actually a lack of rider skill

Most of the above, plus:

Peoples snotty annoying kids who can't do any wrong, helping themselves to my feed & carrots to give tit bits to the horses!

Also, I hate it when some riders stick their horses when they refuse a jump when it was blatently the riders fault. Its awful, and you see the horse bouncing around in a panic because its expecting it. :(

Ooh, and gypsys ragging their poor young ponies up and down the road for hours- give the poor little buggers a break!

People that pull horses in from a field and take them straight to a show completly unfit and bomb them around!!!!

No water in the field

People who think they know everything!!!

Riding without a hat!

people that smoke while riding. Ever since i saw someone accidentally drop a lighted cigarette down the gullet of a horse's saddle. :(

Over rugging - particularly in the winter (people who have 4 rugs on at night etc!)

People who don't feed their horses properly - perhaps take the rugs off and let your horse have some grass and burn it off by walking around / being a bit cold, rather than standing in having nothing.

People who leave in 24/7 and never let their horse just be a horse.

Allthe gadgets / harsh bits etc you see at shows (jumping in particular)

i think im hated by most then :D

My horse has a heart clipped on its backside.........

I ride in trackies..........

I never do up the straps when removing a rug......

I dismount over my horses neck.......

I regularly text/have a convo on the phone.....

But my tack is relivitely clean, I get it checked regularly.... and my horse is very happy :D

My pet hate is just rude people, smoking on horseback and not wearing a hat :o

People who leave their (usually unnecessary) gear all over the place and in all the walkways, encroaching on the tiny bit of space I have - grrrrr!!!!!!!!!!

Dirty, grubby tackrooms and stinking dusty kettles and mugs never washed out

Yard owners who set a bad example

dog ***** everywhere on the yard

dogs loose on yard, esp when farrier is visiting

clay soil

heavy handed riders who jab their horses in the mouth

clipping when horse doesn't need it

unclipped cobs with big fluffy coats - in heavyweight rugs!

Huge Tack boxes/chests being kept outside stables, getting in the way of everything/one

dangerous fencing

cliques who go down the yard to gossip and smoke rather than ride

and last but not least .... poo pickers who don't rinse the barrow before transporting hay and who then feed said hay complete with a nice wet liquid coating of their horses own dung!

........ and breathe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bling tack! - I'm pretty sure a male TB does not want a bling browband and saddlecloth! It's tacky!

People putting their own name on their saddlecloths and jackets as if they are an olympic rider.

Not picking out feet before and after a ride.

People who put their horse in a gag because the horse took off with them the first time they asked for canter, then never cantering again and wondering why its fresh!

People who leave exercise sheets hang down loose flapping about, not difficult to fold it under the saddle flap.

People who only give their horses a list dusting of shaving to wee poo and lay on. My horse gets a huge bed!

People strapping horses heads down to look good.

People complaining about how I ride, I'll ride with short stirrups if I want to thank you, especially as that's when my horse listens most...

I don't like to sound like an old misery, but some things do bug the hell out of me! And I bet some of the things I do would bug people...

Oh and people who can't be bothered to cool their horse down, that is just as important as warming up! And they wonder why their horse ties up!
