Ever get the feeling that you are being watched on your yard, and that perhaps your methods/routines are sometimes found wanting by some individuals? It doesnt necessarily mean that you are doing something wrong, but perhaps just that you do things differently, and other people cannot accept that.

There are many things that I do which have sometimes met with raised eyebrows from others. For example:

a) I do not ride everyday
b) I do not ride for at least a day after worming
c) I feed hot mash on very cold days
d) I apparently do not ride for long enough (eg. only an hour today)
e) I do not always wash Ellie's legs down when I bring her in
f) Her head is clipped - only horse on the yard to be so
g) I believe in HUGE straw beds; some horses have only a corner of bedding laid out, but Ellie's whole stable is knee deep with high banks
h) I have no intention to follow/explore Natural Horsemanship

Is there anything you do which is 'different' to the majority on your yard - and does it bother you that you are alone in doing things this way? I know it doesnt bother me - in fact, I find it rather amusing!

oh im always being moaned at. today i was blaimed for stealing some scabs hoofpick!!! why the hell would i do that when she stood there and i picked out alfies feet with MY purple one with a brush... some people make me mad, oh and once i felt alfie out in the field for a couple of days in MILD weather with a under rug on and HW turnout with neck.. feed morning and eve and hay... but yet i was being crewl to him apparntly!

most days i leave my horses bed up when i have mucked out to allow the floor to air then put it down in the evening when i bring him in from the field
i know im strange

LOL you're having a bit of a job settling into this whole livery yard lark aren't you?
grin.gif

Well, I might as well be vilified too then....

1) I don't turn out if it's super windy or v. rainy - even in summer.

2) Other than getting their feet picked out every day, my youngsters can go weeks without having a brush laid on them.

3) I never wash legs.

4) I rarely bath my horses (in fact, none were bathed in 2008 at all).

5) As far as I'm concerned, rugs were made to be worn for more than one year - therefore I am sadly lacking in the fashionable rugs department.

I should say though, that I rent a bit of a farm and mine are the only horses there and as far as I know the mice aren't up to offering an opinion

Well I haven't been on a yard for a while but when I was the difference between me and fellow liveries:

1) I rode my horse!
2) I understand that box rests means box rest not 23hrs of confinement with an hour charging around in the field while mucking out to "stretch his legs"! What a mean owner i am!
3) Opening gates while mounted
4) Clipped head ditto

Theres a few for starters will prob think of more later!

Ooooh I do this too! But seems to be the norm for most people on my yard....funny isnt it, there is no such thing as 'normal' is there!!!!

why people can't get on with their own horses and leave others be is of great wonderment to me!! i'm lucky, my yard isn't too bad, there is only 1 funny bugger LOL!!
things i do..
i don't wash legs....hell sometimes i din't even pick out feet!
i leave turnout rugs on in stable.
i don't ride everyday either
my cob gets fully clipped in the show season, but not in winter - that one baffles lots!!
she doesn't do enough work in winter to warrent a clip!
when lily was a yearling she went through a rearing phase when being led, i stopped that by walloping her belly hard with a schooling whip.....one numpty complained.....the filly will now lead lovely, shame about the other livery's horse, knocked her down and dragged her - but she insist's he was "only playing"
oh and this one.....i singe my welshies beard....
blush.gif

so there you go, i'm a cruel heartless cow!!

Oh no, I love it! But certain things amuse me....I guess it is only natural when I have only had myself to answer to for such a long time. I guess I never expected everyone's ways to be so different, but they really are! Doesnt make anyone wrong, of course
smile.gif

Oh and I'm with you as far as not turning out in major wind/rain is concerned - I get funny looks for that, too
grin.gif

Pancakes - I leave my beds up too!! I think it helps alot with keeping the stable aired and allows the floor to dry! I also like Miz Ekz have huge deep straw beds - apart from occasionally when i run out of straw and can't get any for a day or two!

One of my horses is also rugged up the eyeballs! He's a TB and is clipped and is getting on now...nearly 19! Whereas some of the horses on the yard don't have rugs on at all at night.

There are only three of us on the yard who pull our horses manes - the others cut theres!!! Arrggh!

I can't really think i do anything too wrong - I think everyone does this there own way. I see people do things sometimes and cringe but hardly ever say anything as its really up to them what they do...who would listen to little me hey!??

I have lots of these !

a) My horse doesn't go out everyday
b) Sols legs ARE washed everyday BUT THEN DRIED!!!!
c) I wear a hairnet when I ride
d) I school whilst hacking
wink.gif

shall add more once I've ate my sunday(on thursday) lunch

And then complain when the horse doesn't go sound and complain even more at the vet bill. I think they forget they asked the vet for advise, paid for it and then not to follow it up - because they no better and the poor horsey being stuck in all day lets put him out and watch him hop on one leg.

It does make you wonder...and it used to make me very angry too but hey ho...

Most people accept the method to my madness.

Both of mine have pulled manes, and the older one has a pulled tail- filly will in time.

They have rubber mats and thin half beds

I don't use haynets

Both ponies wear hoods and rugs

I expect good manners from them - even after 3 months of box rest, my mare led out to the field perfectly because she knows thats what is expected.

I ride in the bitting and saddlery that suits, which includes pelhams, and breast plates some days, snaffles and loose cavassons on others.

My ponies self load or load for anyone - I can't bear horses that don't load (Mine came from a dealer and didn't load brilliantly to begin with, it just took practice)

I don't often jump the older mare at home, she knows her job, I don't need to bore her about it.

I like hiviz and am probably more at risk of aircraft trying to land on me out hacking...

Its better now I'm on a yard where most people ride and go on outings etc with their horses, but at my old yard....

I rode nearly every day, sometimes for over an hour.
shocked.gif

I took my gelding on fun rides and occasional drags hunts even though they made him a bit loopy.
I wasn't scared to get on without lunging first.

I went hacking ON MY OWN

1. I don't over rug. ie horses are only in m/w in this cold weather
2.. however horses are not clipped at the moment because they are only ridden at the weekend.
3. My horses are fed very simple diets. ie no conditioning feeds etc. but as much hay as they can eat. They soon pick up in the spring when the grass comes through ( and they are certainly not thin at the moment either!)
4. I do practice a bit of natural horsemanship but don't feel the need to shove it in other people's faces or criticise what they do...
5. I don't ride every day, even in the summer
6. I am open minded

1) my horses don't get fed at crack of dawn, day starts for them about 8.30
2) I wash off legs
3) I don't turn out every day
4) I don't ride every day
5) I deep bed
6) I sometimes lead up to 5 horses at a time - never get stamped on, they have manners
7) I do wear breeches and smartish jackets and don't ride in tracksuits, trainers and never ever without a hat
8) I employ a groom and still do mucking out
I'm sure there is more, my hill billy yard folk think I'm a snob:)

oh i have tons of these!

1) it is cruel of me to pull my horses mane! (because she seemed so distressed that she was sleeping when i was doing it!)
2) it is cruel of me to tap her on the nose when she nips to teach her not to do it! (her teeth are sharp and she needs to learn my personal space)
3) i do not clip out the whole of her head or her legs
4) i do not clip whiskers as it allows her to sense her surroundings
5) i ride in a simple fulmer snaffle! no gadgets!
6) my horse does not get turned out when the field is excessively poached as she does not graze but does pull tendons etc
7) i bandage her legs at night as she can be clumsy and the one time i havent she rolled and hurt herself very badly.
8) she has her bed up during the day (she is on rubber matting) so her legs and feet can breath
9) i believe that all the supplements do not benefit the horse and decide what to feed by the feeds contents, not what it says on the bag nor the fancy names etc
10) i ride for as long as the horse goes well and if she feels a bit stale, hack out on her
11) i wear hi-vis out hacking!
12) she ALWAYS wheres bandage linings under her white bandages!
13) i can hack out my horse on her own and she is not allowed to nap.
14) i actually use all my gear and rugs! and clean them when they need cleaning!!!
15) i believe prevention is better then the cure
16) i approach schooling solutions by thinking of how the horse is responding to what i ask and trying to understand the horses mindset and way of thinking
17) I DO NOT BELIEVE IN QUICK FIX SOLUTIONS OR DRAWREINS!
18) i do not believe a 6 year old should ever been in a double bridle!
19) i do not like young horse classes
20) my horse will be well mannered at all time, will not barge, and will not kick the door!
21) i expect my horse to load without me having to lead her, (which she does!)
22) i can lead my horse and control her on the ground with my voice alone.

and finally

23) always be open to someone elses views....you do not know everything!

im looked at like i have two heads when i -
1 . i wash legs
2. i wont leave horses headcollars on in field, paddock or stable !
3.i wont feed for tea time before 5pm
4.i dont give a exessive amount of treats or buy them therefore im cruel!! dont get me wrong the odd pack of mints is fine but not 3 packets daily!
5.i wont walk my horse across a icy yard! as some do to stretch his legs in a rock hard paddock and risk break his legs on the way , rather in for a day than have a accident!
6. i longrein not just stand and chace it around for exersise.
7.i pay for trainer to school him 2x a week when im at work .
8. i muck out like i have compulsive cleaning disorder!
9.groom everyday and rug up.
10 feed a hoof supplement .
11.finaly i always get the vet if my horse even looks at me the wrong way ! i know my horse better than anyone to know when a vet needs calling ! lol
plenty more but id be here all day!
fellow liverys think ive lost the plott!

to add on to what i said earlier...

1) i enjoy mucking out and take my time doing it, talking to my horse as i do!

2) my horse has 2 haynets in her box so she can choose which one she likes (believe me she doesnt like just having one, gets in a right strop!)

3) i believe my horse does not love me, but sees me as an accepted member of the herd with a higher ranking.

4) i pay for a trainer to ride and aid my schooling as i recover.

5) i have a compulsive cleaning disorder too!

6) i groom every day

7) i feed a hoof supplement as my horse has shelly back feet

8) i disinfect her hooves weekly!

9) I KNOW HOW TO BANDAGE!!! so many people have not the faintest clue how to do this!!!

Generally my yard is very laid back however i do a few things differently for example;
- I muck out with my horse in the stable loose, rather than tie her up outside where it's cold.
- I never leave my horse unattended tied up or with takc on.. ever.
- My horse has 2 haynets every night (and polishes them both off.)
- I don't feed hay in the field as not alowed to leave it on floor and don't want to use a haynet in the field.
- My horse is turned out in turnout boots to prevent mud fever ~ I think people think i'm silly to spend money on them but better that than vet bills!

i am at a yard where 99% of liveries are into Parelli whereas i am not.
but the majority are very friendly and leave you to your own devices- i don't judge other people and i don't expect other people to judge me as long as the horse is happy and unstressed.

Well if i am basing this on what my current yard liveries DOESNT do of then mine are farily simple!

I actually check on my horses every day

I actually ride my horses

I cut manes (sorry guys!)

I invest in good quality saddles and will spend most of my £'s on a well fitted saddle but will only have medium quality bridles (collegiate so an average english leather bridle)

My tack must match in colour and brand (ie, collegiate bridle/martingale/leathers/reins) but obv saddle is a falcon.

I dont pull tails

I dont feed a heap of food: chaff/speedibeet (dependant) and a vit/min supp is all mine get regardless. Some get nothing apart from grass and a vit/min lick

I muzzle my fatties in summer, yes i prefer to muzzle than put them in a bare paddock alone

I do not tolerate bargyness or horses that will not be caught: hence all of mine come to call and respect my space

My horses each have there own set of brushes/hoofpicks/rugs/boots

I am not afraid to use my whip if i feel it is needed, whoever is watching- and no, i dont care for your opinion on it either

My horses are out 24/7/365 unless we have a show/hunting, some unrugged all year round and some brushed a handful of times

I book my dentist every 12 months in advance, and my physio every 6 months and my saddler rechecks my saddle every 9 months (unless there is a prob)

-lastly, I dont pick out hooves every day *smack on the hand* i really should start tbh!

lol!

all the time - the same ones as you too!

the biggest crime tho is deep littering and the fact that i dont school my horse (even tho its a frozen field) as i dont compete!

[ QUOTE ]

a) I do not ride everyday - ME NEITHER - I DONT COMPETE SO WHO CARES!
b) I do not ride for at least a day after worming
c) I feed hot mash on very cold days ME TOO! ITS NOW LOOKED DOWN ON I THINK
d) I apparently do not ride for long enough (eg. only an hour today) SAME HERE - TOES GET TOO COLD ELSE
e) I do not always wash Ellie's legs down when I bring her in - ME NEITHER!
f) Her head is clipped - only horse on the yard to be so
g) I believe in HUGE straw beds; some horses have only a corner of bedding laid out, but Ellie's whole stable is knee deep with high banks

when i was on livery i did things my way and bugger the rest tbh.

saying that the last yard i was on was pretty much all 1st time owners so anything i did that was "different" got them talking
smirk.gif

i just dont "do" yards anyway, much happier on my own

I'm not at a yard so I'm sure I do LOADS of things that would be greatly disapproved of. Here are some:

1) I deep litter straw beds
2) I trim my Shetland pony's feet
3) I trim all my youngsters' feet until they're well behaved enough for the farrier to visit
4) Morning feed time is anywhere between 6am and 11am, evening feed is anytime between 3pm and 10pm. No one stands at the gate waiting then - they know I'll arrive eventually, and they're not starving as they have ad lib hay or grass!
5) I smack my ponies when they're naughty - they rarely are.
6) I ride and lead 2 round the farm and let them both off for a gallop. They come back when I call
7) I ride and lead the Shetland out and when I get to the woods (no rights of way in it I hasten to add) I let him off for a spin
8) The first things my 3yr old learnt to do under saddle was go backwards, turn on the forehand and open and shut gates.
9) I don't feed my ponies unnecessarily. If they're not doing much they don't get hard feed.
10) I don't rug unneccessarily and I'd never turn anyone out with more than 2 rugs on!
11) If one of mine doesn't like being clipped, hosed, plaited or whatever, I keep doing it until they get used to it.
12) I don't poo pick the field and rarely sweep the bit of hard standing I have.
13) My Shetland spends all summer in 'diet paddocks' and the girls join him when there's grass to spare.
14) I sometimes go for 6hr hacks

I'm sure there's loads of other things....

oh here is one!!1

- i do not believe children should be allowed to bomb around on ponies without adult supervision!

- i do not believe children should be allowed to bomb around in the first place!!!!
