Things you've done that HHO members might not like....

Blimey.... knew we were a like minded bunch, watch out for fluffies!!!!

Beaten the living bejesus out of a few horses, usually for trying to kill me, not for sport.

Have ridden without hat, saddle and bridle and atempted jumps all at the same time (childhood - its amazing I survived)

Competed un-shod horses and also shod un-ridden ones!!!!

Changed feeds overnight when the bag had ran out and the feed merchant had also run out.

Fed potatoe peelings and meat to horses, second one not delibrate but he liked it and lived !!!

Used gadgets and severe bits.

Galloped and jumped horses without doing an 8 week fittening programme first.

Not wormed.

Flippin heck there are loads more but most have already been mentioned!!!!

we never use travel boots - everyone at the livery yard thinks we're mean!!

We leave our horses out 24/7 unless we're competing the next day!

Kids always ride ponies in/out to the field in the summer in just headcollar and leadrope
kids have ridden their ponies onto the trailer!
I deep litter and dont scrub the stable out weekly (ALL the liveries do this??!)
Change feed without intro period
Compete on bute

Dont use boots for jumping

My other saddle on the other hand falls into the unadmissable - its a Gallop - and bl**dy comfy!!!!!!!
 
Ridden horse with 3 shoes on

Pickle does wear rugs I know he is a clysdale x but he is clipped

worn spurs

I give pickle quite a lot of oats I know there heating but thats what he needs

I have got very angry before and ended up smacking pickle HARD

taken a lunge whip to catch a horse! (its a little s**t and if it tried to kick me I have to have some protection)

 
Use a 3ring snaffle on rock for jumping and hacking (on middle ring)
Use tendon boots when jumping
Shoe my horse lol
Own a pink saddlecloth.....pink feed bucket (2actually).....pink grooming kit....and a pink water bucket...oh and cant forget the pink travel boots....for my male horse hehe
Used those wooley showjumping ear covers on my horse over summer (it stopped the flies annoying him and so stopped his headshaking)
would love a diamante brow band hehe
 
oww i have a fair few as well

Have used some 'extreme' measures to stop Fleur rearing as she was just getting postively dangerous (already came over once on housemate), didn't like doing it but as counted out all other reasons other than nappiness was only option. Result is a horse who doesn't *touches wood* rear.

Similary with Dan on two seperate occasions several years apart have whacked him hard between the ears with a schooling whip to nip rearing habit on road in the bud as he was coming precariously close to injuring both of us badly.

Ridden with two schooling whips regulary which i see nothing wrong with
Ridden occasionally in draw reins as appropriate
Used various 'training aids'
Ridden and competed in a dutch gag on the bottom ring whilst wearing spurs (and gag had curb strap) and carrying a whip
ridden a 'nutter' young horse bareback on several occasions (and only hitting floor once!)
don't use travel boots on Fleur as she just removes them
feed within an hour of riding
feed ad lib (in large quanitites think a horsehage bale a day) hayledge to Dan
worm only when worm counts require eg 2 or 3 times a year.
Share the same saddle and bridle for a 17h2 and a 15h3 by adjusting pads/straps
Very very very very very rarely have lessons
Hack out very little
Rarely have saddle fitter out unless saddle needs reflock. (saddler confirms I got good eye and normally just repeats what I thought in first place!)
Use a martingale on Fleur purely as a 'safety device'
At first took Dan straight out at Elementary because I could ride him in a double and thats all I could control him in (please note I was eventually able to reschool him to medium in a snaffle!)
Ridden a horse when on bute (but not competed and was on vets orders!

Rarely ever bandage anything and tend only to use boots at competitions.
Won't use front studs except for dressage.
If i am so inclined by weather won't ride knowing neither I or horse will get anything productive out of it.

There is more to the list but can't think of it offhand. I can defend every action in my own mind though and I have two happy horses and although one is recovering from navicular he is now 99% sound and still happy and the other is happy even though she likes to hide that fact a lot of the time!!
 
I lunge hatless, gloveless, and for about 40 minutes...

I SUPPORT NATURAL HORSEMANSHIP!!!!

I have never used a gadget, fancy bit (bar showing pelhams) or martingales on my horses (except a standing one for Carrie when she reared).

I don't DO dressage!

I have really leathered a number of horses for downright bad behaviour
I own a MASSIVE diamante browband
I put boots and bandages on my horses
I use 1 rein on the strongest setting on a strong bit out hunting
I rarely turn my horses out in the field because it's muddy and I don't want them to get dirty (they arse around when I'm trying to hose the clay mud off which takes aaaages) They do however get turned out in the indoor arena most nights for 1/2 an hour
When Storm has really pissed me off I've got off, tied her to the arena fence, gone back into the stables and had a few minutes of chillout time

Theres probably alot more but thats all I can think of right now

Im liking this thread, makes me feel like a more normal owner/rider.
I say I trot on roads because I can remember a while ago someone posted a thread about trotting their 5yo on the roads for about 20mins non stop to knock the smoke out of it. A hell of a lot of scrapping as it is meant to be bad for them. That is how all my hunters get and stay fit, oats and roadwork-lots of.

Nothing I do with my horses or horses I ride is cruel. If the horse bites me, the horse needs to be taught a lesson. I believe that many horses are not snaffle rides, so why battle with them in a snaffle, put something stronger in and both chill out. Spurs are great if they are used properly...etc etc etc

Always one isnt there! The only thing I've read on this thread that really shocked me was the feeding beet dry, but I know that some people do that, and her horse is obviously still alive so its not harming it.
 
ALthough some are rather severe, this thread does make you feel better about not being perfect all the time!

I feed my horse polos by hand.

I often trot on roads (and have been known to experience a few steps of canter when my horse is finding a hill difficult - not requested by me!)

I often canter and jump in the same places on hacks, and get annoyed when he predicts it next time and jogs!

I ride in a happy mouth snaffle and have been known to give him enormous socks in the teeth when I realise it doesn't quite provide the brakes i thought it did.

Have been known to over rug, and never leave my horse out 24 hours despite a wealth of grazing - I don't care who thinks otherwise but a horse standing by a gate calling for 12 hours solidly does NOT enjoy living out!

Often smoke whilst riding and sometimes don't even put the cigarette out on my boot before I flick it on a dry summers day - eeeek!

Also talk and text whilst riding.

Am frequently afflicted by RIDE RAGE and abuse other non-riding users of the country park for the slightest misdeamours.
 
Here here Rosie! Everything i do for rock is in his best interest and i have a very chilled out and happy horse. Riding him in a snaffle was painful for us both, he'd jst lean on it (and noone could get him off no matter what you did) and he developed a seirously hard mouth. In his other bit i have control, respect and he works properly and is not in any pain. We're both a whole heap happier. Thing is no one can say whats right and whats wrong and generalise it to every single horse in the world, because at the end of the day different horses respond to different approaches and i adopt different approaches for the different horses i have (or have had)
 
Let's see:

Have whacked pony when it's refused to pick it's feet up and instead try and kick me - I can't stand horses that take the mick

Thrown a headcollar at a horse who wouldn't stand still

Chucked a headcollar at a horse that took an hour to catch so it knew I wasn't happy

Dont lunge with a whip - Baron was whip shy

I own stuff by Joules, Toggi, Musto, Ariat, I wont go on

Have ridden with 2 whips at once

Have ridden a horse with a 3 ring gag, grackle, martingale oh and 1 set of reins

Have chucked rugs on to the extent straps have hit stable/stall roof

Ridden in spurs

Have beaten a horse with a whip after it dragged someone I was working with. Wrapped lead rope around the nose and as soon as it even thought of going elsewhere it was walloped

Have been part of a team of 5 people holding a horse whilst it was clipped

Have groomed a horse to remove mud around head and saddle area then ridden
 
oooo, I also own 2 JW saddlecloths, never clean my tack, trot on the road, use a fluffy wedge, jump in fluffy boots, I turn my curb chain the wrong way sometimes, talk on the phone while riding, txt while riding, always hack out listening to my iPod............hmmmm any more

Had one of my horses galloped at and jumped OVER me as I tried to duck to the side when I was trying to bring them in once because he was a narky sod. After that I took my lungeing whip out in the field and used it to round them up. I can crack them really well

oo yup there's more:

trotted on roads as was late back from a hack with 6 kids

yelled at kid I was taking out as she wouldn't shorten her reins and pony was taking the mic

Have used my phone whilst riding down the road

ridden in a pelham with roundings

whacked a jump up to height as knew that the girl riding was perfectly capable
 
Oh yes and I neevr used to wait an hour or even 30 min when Kassi came in from field...used to get in, groom, tack up and ride...She lived out...however I always warm up and cool down a horse....

Well, yes always one that'll say what others are thinking but I can assure you I'm not one of those you're probably referring to!
I do plenty with my nags that some would frown upon but some people here seem to be positively proud of the fact they lay into their horses (an example) and other things!

*I travel J with no boots because he panics in the box and at the other end you can't get them off. [Got in a shouting match with some nosey beggar over this once]
*I have chased my last horse with a lunge whip around a field for 7 hours because he wouldn't catch. He gave up eventually. [driving away from the herd]
*I don't feed supplements
*I don't believe in overrugging or over equipping a horse.
*I am sorely tempted to buy a pink joules saddlecloth for my gelding.
 
I can honestly say I've never been proud of leathering my horses and I've felt dreadful after, but it's something I've done which other HHO members wouldn't like, so I included it

I would lay into a horse if it needed it. Horses are HUUUUGE buggars who could easily be the boss if they wanted to. I think its just making sure the horse knows who is the leader out of the two of you, and if laying into it is all it'll listen to, then thats what needs to be done.
