Thinking about switching to haylage

I currently feed my 2 year old WB x TB ad lib hay when he’s in overnight. I was primarily thinking about switching him to haylage because I’m allergic to hay (have seen on another forum that switching to haylage helps), but after doing a bit of reading up of it online (I’ve never fed haylage before), I saw it has a higher protein content than hay so I’m thinking it might be better for him anyway whilst he’s still growing.

I’m aware it’s more expensive than hay which I don’t mind too much. I have seen though that it will need to be consumed within a few days of opening as it deteriorates quickly. I was hoping to buy the big square bales of haylage from my usual hay supplier but I won’t be able to get through it all within a few days. So I was looking at the smaller bales which you can buy online, but there seems to be lots of different varieties! So I’m just looking for some advice.

Do you think haylage is good for youngsters? How do you buy in your haylage and what type do you buy?

Now it's cooler larger bales of haylage should last a bit longer, I'm guessing protein levels depends entirely on type of haylage, where it was made ect

We have fed youngsters on our big bale dry haylage with no problem. We are still feeding 2x 16hh horses on it and it lasts us for about 10 days. We keep it covered so that it last longer, as above when the weather is cooler the haylage lasts longer.
