There's a Highland mare for sale not too far from here who I've had book-marked for a while - I'm looking for a bombproof ploddy confidence giving pony and she seems to fit the bill. Her owner has put up some video footage in the last week, which I saw this morning and it's tipped me into emailing to get an idea of price. She's 17 and an ex-brood mare and needs to lose a LOT of weight, but what do you guys think?

(PS: JFTD, if you read this, we're safe, the Highland x PRE has disappeared off the HPS website!)

I *think*she might have been sold yesterday, sorry :( Worth an email to check though. He may have another ex-brood mare for sale

btw, she's not as fat as she looks - I've seen her in the flesh and she has very broad ribs (and a good covering of hair!), and a brood mare's belly. And I'm very into lean horses - I'm not the sort to see them fat ;)

we she certainly wouldn't pass a vetting soshould be nice and cheap! why do people let them get into such a state, ex brood ours were never like that!

she still looks in foal!!!!!! are you sure she isnt. i would be a bit worried as she seems very reluctant to trot and because of her excess weight it could be the beginning of laminitis. you may find she changes if she loses alot of weight and may not be the plod you are looking for. sorry to be negative but that is my opinion for what its worth.

That's what I thought hence very low price for fat unfit horse.

Honestly, Caroline, if she is still for sale, go see her and see for yourself. She is very laid back and not as overweight as she looks. Youcan condition score her in the flesh and see for yourself! She is for sale as breeder is moving towards a "sportier'" type of highland.

Thanks all.

I do trust the guy selling her (not met him, but word of mouth recommendations from more than one source) and if he says she's a perfect family pony/confidence giver then I'm pretty certain she is - he's had her for a few years as far as I understand.

*grin* I suspect if I see her in the flesh I'll probably be collecting her as soon as I can arrange a trailer! Hence posting here to ask some more expert eyes than mine before I go down there :)

I am pretty sure he had her when I went to view fergs about 3 years ago... Don't hold me to it though ;)

I think she's lovely... Pretty little thing and yeah, she needs to lose some weight but that can be done...

She's happy being mauled by the kiddies and looks to be quite sane and laid back... Maybe she will be a bit more on her toes when she drops some weight but it's not going to happen over night and your confidence might increase as she gets fitter... My daughter had a very overweight 18yr old pony on loan - luckily she is totally remote controlled by voice as she was a pocket rocket even when she was full of rolling cellulite...:)

I'm certainly no expert but she's a similar sort to what I've been looking for around the 15h mark - so if she ticks the boxes you need I'd whiz over to see her... :D

Nice enough sire, don`t know the dam. I bought my Highland as a confidence giver and he`s more than fulfilled that role. Like many Highlands he`s very opinionated and not at all lacking in intelligence and like so many Highlands, has a sense of humour ;). He`s versatile, reliable and safe. He`s way better schooled than I will ever be but at seventeen years of age he`s seen it all and done it all and is showing me a few of his tricks. He was massively obese and hugely unfit when I first got him but he`s currently the best I`ve ever seen him - way fitter than me!

The mare in the video looks a kindly sort and as such will probably do wonders for boosting your confidence. Definitely worth a look if she hasn`t already been sold.

I think I'm in love!

I know you can't tell everything from a vid but she seems to have that real maternal instinct about her that you get on some broodmares. Like she's aware that little people need to be looked after especially carefully.

I would go and see, if she is still on the market. Doesn't hurt to look. From the video she looks lovely. I watched some more of their videos and they seem to have some nice ponies. That guy has a lovely voice, I could listen to him reading the telephone directory!

:D I thought that too!

The mare looks very kind and sweet but is she just unfit and overweight or is she not sound??? She seems to be coming from a lovely home anyway.

I really like this mare, she is pretty and seems very kind and good to handle, nice and chilled. She does look awfully overweight but that can be changed. I thought she was lame initially but when she was asked to go up a gear she improved and seemed free and easy enough to me, just looks like a lack of impulsion rather than lameness, though I could be totally wrong. I do really like her though, keep us posted :D

Ooooooooooooh :D

Any idea how much he was wanting for her? (No reply to email yet). Husband has come over all generous and said he'll pay if it's not too much.

Ooh, he sounds a nice sort :p where'd you find him? I'd put up with a man in my life if he bought me ponies, lol :D

pm-ed :)

Er, I pinched him off someone else :o He's fabulous at fencing, field shelter building and sorting field drainage as well :D

Thanks for the PM, looks like she's going to be out of the immediately available budget and by the time I've saved up the difference she'll have sold :(

She looks a lovely type, really kind and the weight wouldn't bother me BUT not convinced re soundness, looks lame on off hind to me unfortunately.

When she's trotting forward in the last minute of the video, you can see she's sound. I think the unevenness you can see earlier an artefact of her slopping along with the mini-rider :)

Now I am surprised. She's a nice pony and would soon loose weight with work.

But IMO at her age and a retired brood mare, she isn't really worth very much.

I would be surprised if she sells quickly in this market.

As you are no longer interested do you mind saying how much she is. Strange that the ad didn't mention it.

Shows what you know about the market! :D The ad doesn't mention a price and I gave Caroline a ball-park but told her to wait to see what the seller actually says. Since the ball-park didn't come from the seller it wouldn't be right to share it on here, imo
