Thinking of going to see this Highland - opinions?

Thats not what i see when i watch the video, i see a pony with a lovely fantastic temperament, who is overweight with obvious pockets of fat and a crest who is stiff in their hind movement and not keen to go forward.
She might be suitable for someone but i would advise vetting

I agree, her temperament looks beautiful.

She's 17 so not at all old for a proven broodie  and there is a decent market for registered Highland's as has been mentioned.

Her figure? Tells us she is a deep bodied, old fashioned mainland Highland broodmare, who needs ridden work  It's sometimes useful to read the thread before jumping in with both feet ;)

I've already said I think she's gorgeous... And the more 'ploddy type' is right up my street... :D

But she's undoubtedly carrying a fair bit of weight aside from a baby belly (which I have myself :o:D)... No issues with her age but I personally would prefer to see a bit of the extra off before being put in foal again... No idea if that's what the current owner means to do or not if she stays where she is... :)

She has a lovely, kind face and looks like she has the patience of a saint with children - all qualities that you can't put a price on. She does look like a naturally stocky pony with a deep shoulder so to me these types can look overweight when they are not. She does have a 'loose' belly typical of brood mares but this may tighten up with more work.

I will mention one negative that came to mind since the OP asked: she is quite wide and both the children who ride her in the video are forced into having their legs quite wide. This can make it a bit more difficult to develop a good seat and be an effective rider. Now this may not be a major consideration for the buyer, but if the children find her difficult to motivate with their legs and seat she may be quickly outgrown.

I was being silly, who knows whether the free to good homes people have a registed highland :D :D

I still wouldn't expect her to be that much money if she has finished breeding and is too old to show.

She's not too old to show. My Highland Pony will most likely be in his twenties before he starts showing under saddle. He did have a successful in-hand career as a colt before I bought him as a three year old. I agree on the not much money though. Know of two retired brood mares locally (Australia) and would happily snap up either of them if I had the money.

I didn't mean she was too old to show in veteran or local classes.

What I meant was she is too old to do affiliated mainsteam highland classes, which is the only place being registered would matter.

I am happy to admit I was wrong, apparently people on here dont consider £5K for an oldie to be OTT. I'm not anti oldie, I have one, just wouldn't pay a lot of money for one.

She seems arthritic to me, and doesn't look young for her age, she looks quite old actually considering she is only 17!

I wouldn't pay more than £1000 for even if she is supposed to be a saint, if she is advertised for £5000 I do think the seller is taking the P***.

Be aware also that being overweight can often have a similar effect on horses as being underweight, the behave because they haven;t the energy/fitness not too!!!!!!

Who has ever said she's up for £5000? Yes, she is possibly arthritic, but you'll be hard pushed to find a 17 year old who doesn't have arthritic changes somewhere...

She'd be for me and I don't have kids, so not an issue :D

I've been talking to her owner by email today; it seems we're not so far apart on the price as I first thought and after a bit of calculator bashing and discussion with my husband, I'm hoping to go and see her later this week :)

Noticeable arthritic movement at 17 isn't great in my opinion, and she is quiet young to be showing such obvious signs in my experience with the oldies.

I presumed she was up for 5k as it was the sum mentioned in rockysmum's last post

That's great news! Hope it all works out and keep us updated!

It's looking like Thursday afternoon. Getting excited already :)

TeamBarney, the £5k figure came from another post in the thread where someone mentioned that a late teenage Highland gelding they knew had people falling over each other to buy him at that price. The guide price for this mare is nowhere near that much.

We are in NE of Scotland, where there are an abundance of good reg highlands, at very reasonable prices, just to throw this into the mix, Friends sold this very quiet mare at the start of this year (sorry OP) 12yr old lovely mum, good to hack, for a lot less than any figures bandied about
I also have a Hipo x spanish and they are def not for the faint hearted, although very pretty to look at!

Ye God, Hipo x Spanish, you are brave :D Brains, a sense of humour with a pony attitude :p she must be fun.

I love Highlands, a very nice Forglen gelding belonging to a friend of mine restored my confidence some years ago after it had been destroyed by my nutty Welsh...there are a lot of Hipos around my way.

They do hold their value, when I was looking some years back for a saint of a pony I couldn't afford one even if I was prepared to take an older (17 - 20) boy - I ended up with a Haffie instead :D As my late great YO said as he was unloaded " Oh look dear, you got an Austrian Highland". Good, sound, sensible, good doer (but that can be a curse itself) weight carriers are in short supply!

OP, let us know how you get on - I'd have her in a heartbeat if I could have another one - but only after a through vetting, just as you would for any 'older pony' but also remember that Pet Plan will fully insure up to the age of 20 once you have a vet cert. ;)

She looks lovely

She has lost weight since the video and he will be keeping a close eye, I'm certain if he were to put her in foal - however, it is not looking likely she will not sell as a riding pony!

If she doesnt make the asking price, you'll put her in foal????

How old is she? Don't you think she's foaled enough? What's her figure telling you?

She throws a lovely foal and will happily do so again, if needs be. Her figure is that of a well tested brood mare.

She doesn't look old to me  I also see no evidence of any serious degree of arthritis - she has the traditional highland movement associated with the more work-man-like type of which she is typical. In fact, when she steps up a gear under the more experienced child rider, I thought she looked quite free and forward, all things considered.

She'd be for me and I don't have kids, so not an issue :D

Excellent! I hope you get something sorted :D

None of the figures discussed on this thread have been in relation to this mare.

Please no more posting photos of your lovely PRExhighlands. There should be a law against it  Don't tempt me!

Thought that was the case JFTD, hence i used the term 'bandied' :D:D
Lol my mare is very pretty unfortunately you would be begging for her to go after a week, she is a bit of an acquired taste!

:D Actually I had my eye on a little PRExhighland colt that was on the HPS website till recently. I'm not in a position to have another, but dear god I was tempted

Indeed... I think an orderly (or not as the case may be) queue is forming fast... :D

Indeed...

Can I just take this opportunity to inform the forum that anyone up for a little more of a challenge from a pony might be interested to know that Dry Rot also has a few youngstock for sale and a lovely 8 year old ex-brood mare on his website :D

Would that be the rather attractive Mistletoe? :)

Ha, you're subconsciously lured on by psychic knowledge of these threads, I presume :D

I can't afford one, and I love my purebred highlands too much to swap them for PRExs. Maybe one day I will have one as well as my boys though... I can live in hope :o

She was who I had in mind :D
