THis horse broke his neck, headcam of him doing intermediate xc

What's the story? My boy broke his neck in Dec 2012 so interested to hear.

There's info under the vid - apparently the horse broke it's neck in '13 in a pasture accident.

Watching with volume on though, I think the rider found it a bit quick to start with too!! :P I liked the commentary though it!

This is probably a really stupid question but having never evented I just wondered how you know where to go and which jumps you are supposed to jump and which you don't as the horse seemed to go past some jumps and jumped others?

You walk the course in advance and check the flags on each fence, each height will have a different colour eg yellow you then jump each fence with red on the right and white to the left.

Absolutely fantastic, that horse is such a dude!! Kesley was brave on that run, crikey that was some speed in to fence 2! :o Off to look at the Facebook page now, thanks for the link HH.

What a great video and enjoyed rider's commentary particularly when she said 'trust mummy'. It looked fast to me but then I'm not brave enough to event so what do I know :D

Now there's a horse who loves his job! Love him, love his name and love your commentary - particularly "Pirate you've gotta settle.......please?"!!

And she had time faults. :) To be fair, not many and almost everyone did - the Int was a short course as ran along a 2* and 3* and you can see how flat the land is.

A surprising number of horses come back from stable neck fractures ("breaking the neck" to me means permanent neurological damage, which, as with people, is no means a given), and I suspect, especially in the past, people never even knew what happened. I've known quite a few horses worked up for "behavioural issues" that turned up to have chronic or acute spinal damage. If you give the horse time and understanding, they often heal well. (If you slap on a set of draw reins or a Pessoa to teach it not to chucks its head around, often less so. ;))

He looks a super cool horse and well done to them for getting him back out there. Hatcams are good fun!

What an amazing horse, he loves his job! And she is such a super calm rider, I dread to think what comes out of my mouth xc!

I loved every second of that and even felt a bit emotional at the end bless them. Especially loved the early "oh my god" just before take-off, lol

Hi everyone! This thread has just been brought to my attention, and I wanted to thank all of you for your support!! Pirate is just the most amazing horse, and I've been very much in love with him since I got him at the racetrack as a 3-yr-old in July 2006, for a few hundred dollars. His neck fracture in Jan 2013 was substantial; he was hardly able to move at first, didn't want to put any weight on his left foreleg, and seemed to have little control of his hind end. Having been told by one vet he should be put down, I was just thrilled to be bringing my boy home, even if it broke my heart that I would never ride him again...or so we thought. ;) I'm so grateful to my friend Francis Whittington, staying with us at the time to teach a clinic to my students (and me!), who gave me his own ArcEquine to use and put me in touch with Ian Thirkell, who has been one of our biggest supporters. Together these two refused to let me lose hope in my brilliant horse, and the ArcEquine was not only largely instrumental in the healing process, but a most effective comfort and pain management tool for my sweet Pirate. It seemed impossible that the neck would heal back in such a way that did not put pressure on his spinal cord, as generally the calcification and scar tissue would cause permanent effects, but somehow my amazing boy pulled through this...and as you can see, he's back and better than ever. :)

Pirate's comeback this spring has been extremely emotional for me, and I thank my lucky stars every single time I sit on this horse. Thank you all so, so much for your kind words...and for not laughing at me TOO much for the way I talk to Pirate (or, as it seems, scream "OH MY GOD!" when he's coming into a fence a bit too quickly) the whole way round. Please keep cheering him on from across the pond!!!! :) Though I blog infrequently, I try to keep the Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Kelsey-Briggs-Eventing/106733712734342?ref=hl) fairly up-to-date, and there are plenty of pictures and other videos of him on there if any of y'all want to see them!! Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Go Pirate!!!!!! :) :) :)

Kelsey

Welcome to the forum :)

Thank you so much for giving us a bit more info and I really did find it quite emotional at the end as you just sounded so so happy. If I had a horse and needed a rider, I would pick you every time based on your attitude and "chatting" around the course, lol. Love it.

Three cheers for Kelsey & Pirate :)

Hi there Kelsey ,thanks for joining us . We love pirate too. Please tell me that the first few fences wernt as fast as they looked !eeeek !. I am hoping it was just the head cam.

I almost cried watch big the headcam and now I'm almost crying at your reply Kelsey !

I hope you continue to enjoy each other for a long long time !

Now can somebody ban Kelsey from posting anymore as I'm turning into an emotional wreck over a horse and rider that I don't even know :biggrin3:
