Definitely will be a cover up. RSPCA now on the poor us method saying they are having to cancel fundraising events because of threats and how are they going to survive etc.

It must be terrible for them with £240 MILLION of net assets. I hate charities that hold so much in reserve.

This story just gets more horrific :(

Allegedly some of the horses died in transit. That must have been truly awful for tne other horses on board. They weren’t little ponies but big TB’s so I bet they took up most of the floor space once they were down. Surely somebody must have been able to tell if they were that near death that a journey was going to kill them?’ This really needs investigating my someone else other than the RSPCA.

I don't know whether to believe they died in transit or just got too sick they had to euth them the other end.

They lost the little chestnut arab mare transporting or loading her too iirc.

This bit is particularly concerning 'RSPCA ‘DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS’ - AMY QUIRK KEPT HER OWN HORSE & TACK AT THIS YARD. SHE QUICKLY COLLECTED HER HORSE ON THIS FATEFUL DAY, and collected her tack from the office! So she must have regularly witnessed these starving horses - SHE who is an RSPCA officer!!'

I'm all for not taking your work home with you but :rolleyes3:.

It just gets worse and worse. There were offers of help from experienced yards close by, but they chose to travel the poor things to Wales! Unbelievable.

If this can be proved then the Charities Commission (https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/charity-commission) would be interested!

Do you know where in Wales? Suspect I have half an idea and if it's where I'm thinking of they'd all end up at Hillside after a year or so. Edit: Found out it's not where I'm thinking of!

can someone please summarise what has happened? I don't have access to FB right now anyway and while I'm no fan of the RSPCA after the Peel case, I am wary of hysterical FB posts TIA :)

They are not hysterical Facebook posts, they are facts backed up by video evidence...

-------------------------------------------------------------FROM FACEBOOK POST OF AN EYEWITNESS AT THE WEEKEND----------------------------

"WHY DID THE RSPCA KILL SO MANY OF THESE EMACIATED HORSES LAST WEEKEND??

THEY LOADED UP ‘TEN TRAGIC HORSES’. ( including the mare & foal in video)- promising they were to be taken to their Rspca holding in Wales. They were taken away by ‘Phillip James Lloyd Lewis ‘ partners of RHYD-FELIN STUD! ( see pics showing mare & foal being loaded ).

SO WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO THE MISSING FIVE THAT DIDNT ARRIVE. ???

Rspca claimed that two died on that journey - and that only FIVE made it to welsh rspca holding.

We’d like to know what vet told them that the TRAGIC TEN were fit to travel to Wales last Saturday !!!

IF THEY WERE TOO ILL FOR THE JOURNEY- THEN WHY DIDNT THEY SHOOT THESE FIVE WHEN THEY SHOT THE FIRST EIGHT?

IF THEY WERE FIT ENOUGH FOR THE LONG JOURNEY - THEN WHY KILL THEM???

THE RSPCA PROMISED THE GIRL RESCUERS THEY WOULDN’T SHOOT 8 OF THE HORSES WHEN THEY LEFT AT MIDNIGHT ON SATURDAY . BUT AS SOON AS THE GIRLS LEFT- THEY SHOT THEM !!!

RSPCA ‘DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS’ - AMY QUIRK KEPT HER OWN HORSE & TACK AT THIS YARD. SHE QUICKLY COLLECTED HER HORSE ON THIS FATEFUL DAY, and collected her tack from the office! So she must have regularly witnessed these starving horses - SHE who is an RSPCA officer!!

...the following morning ( Sunday) - THEY SHOT ANOTHER!! Right in front of the distraught girls who had fought so hard for them...

The RSPCA Claim they have no connection with Annette Nally and ‘are investigating’ .... then why is RSPCA Rescue Horse ‘Thor ‘ being photographed with RSPCA officers ? NB. Thor was indeed at Nally’s yard, she moved him to her garden midnight on Sunday, and he is believed to have bern collected with another horse yesterday by ROR Rescue . Additionally , the Sun newspaper last year ran an article on the RSPCA rehoming a Shetland pony with Nally!!

Annette Nally and the RSPCA have both got a lot to answer for ! The horses were skeletal, dehydrated- emaciated , weak - from starvation and neglect. The easy way to cover this cruelty (and protect donations) ...was to destroy the evidence.... it’s called ‘cover-up’. !!!

NB: The photos were taken by the witnesses who provided all the facts on this post . They spent the whole day providing water, their own hay , removing hot rugs from the dehydrated horses outside, (revealing sweat sores) , opening barn and stable doors where horses were locked in - all without water/food. All are all very angry and traumatised by the sights they witnessed and the killings.""

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Videos taken on the Saturday and SUnday are available. I know some of the people who were present and there is nothing in it for them to lie - many of them personally donated money and haylage / rugs to these horses when they were originally rescued and placed in the care of A.N BY THE RSPCA!

they sound somewhat hysterical when they are in caps with multiple exclamation marks and some disjointed videos that some people can't see. I dont doubt they arent' true, just that its hard to understand what's happened based on the thread. I'd just like some bullet pointed facts please, if anyone one has the inclination.

I don't do facebook so have only read what has been on this thread and my feeling is that once again the rspca are covering up something that they know has not been handled well and that the people who were involved in trying to help are totally frustrated with the outcome so the facebook statement is not as clear as it could be, it is full of capitals because they want to shout, rather than being hysterical they know they are probably not going to be heard and that once again nothing will be done.

Following the Peel case the charity was supposed to be looked into but I suspect nothing will ever change because they do have such huge resources behind them to allow them to get away with a cover up, once the animals are dead the evidence has gone and who do they really need to answer to when the so called owners have allowed the abuse in the first place they are hardly going to push for anything.

I've been out of touch for the last few days, what I am not sure about is whether she was running any sort of rescue operation before Thor came along. But as I see it (not double checked for accuracy just trying to help!):

Firstly RSPCA took this person to caught over treatment of a GSD, judge wasn't very nice about the RSPCA.

A while ago (would have to search for date) RSPCA was involved with 10 decent enough looking horses that were transported to her yard as a foster/rescue situation, the person who transported these horses to hers has photos of them on that day.

Last Friday/Saturday Weaam was returned to them from the recycled racehorses team.

On the Sunday the RSPCA attended but officer didn't want to do call vet, fuss made vet called. RSPCA employee requests her attending colleagues to remove her tack for her (presumably having already moved horse).

10 horse Lorry arrived to collect horses, 10 horses were loaded, remaining 7/8 horses PTS- whether they needed to be or whether they just didn't fit on the lorry up for debate.

10 horse lorry travels to wales and half the lorry load die en route (apparently).

5(?) horses remaining in this persons care based at her other yard.

^^ others please feel free to correct!

Heard similar ester....
Heard more horror stories too.
Someone lost a cat.... rspca found cat and put it down. Turned out cat had been microchipped and reported missing but rspca didn't check this before they pit it down.
I don't know anymore... They (rspca) need a complete overhaul.

thank you. they do sound very inept when it comes to horses-unless its a poorly bred coloured cob that they then blame 'horse owners' generally for. poor horses, I hope the remaining ones will be alright.

(I understand emotions run high with this sort of thing but nothing is achieved by them, its cold hard facts that do the job generally)

in addition to the Peel case, was there not another incident with some northern self procalimed horse whisperer shooting a load of horses that were a bit skinny with some rain scald? or am I misremembering?

I agree with your sentiment on the caps. From what I understand it's thus:

The lady (Annette Nally) who rescued Thor the skinny TB with the fat owner on a fun ride has been rescuing other TBs but they have been found starving and emaciated. Mare who had recently given birth to a live foal was there and there was a dead horse in with the starving horses that were eating their own droppings. No food or water to be seen.

Police were called, who in turn notified RSPCA who came down and claimed they were taking control of the situation. Only they shot 7 horses and loaded another 10 onto a transporter.

Only 5 of those horses made it to the other end of their journey.

Annette Nally also supposedly has another yard somewhere else, there are rumours that these horses aren't in much better shape than those found here.

Thor is apparently in good shape somewhere else again.

I think that was part of the Peel case, the so called horse whisperer is also the knackerman whose job is to shoot horses the rspca find too difficult to deal with, arabs and tb's seem to be in that category even if there are genuine homes that would take them in, wheres the coloured cobs are taken in and rehabilitated.

thanks 9tails-I remember who Thor is now. good grief, poor horses all round.

Some of these horses are named “The Coney Lane horses”. They weren’t ever the RSPCA’s but Team Thor supposedly worked with them to secure ownership. That situation went on for years and the RSPCA did nothing. A FB group was set up by concerned locals then Team Thor muscled in and took credit for their eventual ‘rescue’. A fundraising page was set up for their care and this is what’s happened to them in a few short months.

It’s alk a bit fishy really. An RSPCA inspector apparently kept a horse at the same yard so presumably saw this neglect and did nothing. The RSPCA are obviously now investigating, with no mention of the blood they have on their hands or an explanation as to why so many are now dead.

Over the years I have had a couple of what would be classes as 'rescues', and if there are no underlying health issues that simple routine veterinary treatment solve, and worming, all they need is time, enough forage for their intended bodyweight, water, suitable shelter and turnout in a herd.
Its not rocket science, its not expensive
I have no idea what is going on with the RSPCA, I only know in medicine we look for outcomes, and targets and review treatment. If they are giving money to anyone or placing an animal in anyone's care there should be a plan for that care, and how that can be achieved. It doesn't matter who the carer is, and that applies to every one.
Big horses tend to cost a lot to feed generally and I can understand why they are difficult to place and anyone taking them on should either have experience of large animals or given guidance with mentorship. I think being honest about a horse being destroyed is not a bad thing.
It could be a tough winter this year with farmers already worrying about forage stocks, and talking about having to cull animals, so the chances are this will not be first of these 'rescues'. I am sad when any animal loses its life needlessly but how the animal is treated when it's alive should be our main consideration.

I agree. These poor souls show there are indeed fates worse than death :(

I think the feeling is that they were pts as some sort of cover up. Reports state that the knacker man was called before the vet, who was only called after much pressure from those that discovered them. Putting to sleep healthy horses doesn’t sit well with some people, especially when there’s dishonesty involved.

Personally I’d like to see local Authoririties enforce the microchipping law and humanely destroy any equine found fly grazing without one, but I wouldn’t trust the RSPCA to be responsible for it.

Being shot in a group is a distressing way to go. I simply can not imagine WHW or the Blue Cross would do something like this. And, in the video, the horses are obviously relieved and well enough to eat by themselves, not collapsed, not past the point of no return, and if they weren't checked for microchips, then why not?

I've certainly no issue with Euthing horses which have an uncertain future. But I do want them to state why they are making that decision, is it on welfare grounds, the fact that they have nowhere else for them to go, that they don't think they would be rehomable.

What sort of gets me is the level of urgency/convenience that the RSPCA seem to bring with them, partly linked to there apparent inability to work with other agencies, they seem to have to resolve the problem now, that day. It seems very handy that exactly the right number of horses that wouldn't fit in the lorry needed Euthing.

It’s very concerning that no attempt appears to have been made to find alternative homes for these horses before they were euthanised. If, as the original complainants say, the horses were standing, then possibly the main issue was starvation. Now, one imagines that the horses haven’t seen a farrier for some time so may have had issues walking and have looked worse that they really were. Maybe the starvation had caused organs to start shutting down, but I’m not seeing anywhere that bloods/time was taken to check this.

Why was Wales chosen as a destination to transport sick horses? Was any attempt made to find temporary homes nearer? Were chips checked?

I cannot understand why the RSPCA seem determined to hurry up and once more put themselves in such an unfortunate position, knowing questions will be asked.

I understand that the RSPCA as an entity have very limited capacity for horses.

What I struggle with is why they turn down offers of safe spaces or don't get one of the other charities to help if they have room. It was ludicrous how close Carrot and spud were to Bransby for instance. Everyone else seems to move horses to a safe space, then make a decision about their future rather than the bull in a china shop approach.

I cannot get my head around five horses dying on a journey.

Does the RSPCA not liaise with any other agencies who do have the facilities/expertise? Surely that would be their first port of call as opposed to calling a private knackerman and transporting sick horses hundreds of miles?

They seem to be very unwilling to share the burden, perhaps because of an imagined lack of donations. In the case I was involved in they were phoned by an Environmental Health Officer (because they didn’t have funds to deal with it, although they did have the expertise as the officer had horses). The RSPCA refused to keep them updated, didn’t even take a statement and the first the EH dept knew was when they read in the press that there’d been a prosecution. In my experience they don’t want any help, so they must be prepared to face scrutiny when they make mistakes.
