Hi,

I have been looking at options for new saddles for one of my horses for a while now and have still not decided. I am not looking to buy for another month or so but would still like some opinions so I know how much I need to save :)

Horse in question is an arab. Currently in a wide saddle but has prominant withers.

I want a nice smart looking saddle to do abit of everything in. Showing, local dressage, small jumps, hacking etc. Budget is about £500.

I cant find a second hand I like and so was looking into the Thorowgood t6.

Has anyone got one of these?
How adjustable is it, as horse constantly changes shape?
Does it scratch/mark easily?
Would it be smart enough to show locally in?
How much am I looking at for a new T6?

I also cant find a local stockist anywhere. If you ordered online is it easy to adjust the fit after buying?

Any opinions appreciated!

We have the Kent & Masters high wither GP - basically the leather version of the T6 (K&M is owned by Thorowgood). Horse changes shape a fair amount and the gullet system seems to be working pretty well so far.

If you want to do showing, I'd really go for leather over synthetic.

I've just bought a GP - can't recommend it highly enough for day to day riding. Really comfy and my horse is going well in it.
It has an adjustable gullet, like a Wintec. My saddler fitted mine and I would only really consult her if I need to change it.
It doesn't seem to scratch or mark, but it is new and I've been treating it kindly :)
I personally wouldn't show in mine (it is black, dunno what the brown is like) - it does look synthetic, but I use it for dressage and jumping and would very happily compete in it for that
Around the £500 mark should be a reasonable guesstimate.

The T6 is brilliant.

The synthetic ones look leather so yes you could show locally in one and yes there is a gullet change version and the normal version has fish which are disks you slide in to change the saddles shape.

I had the T6 GP for my old horse and I think it is harder to damage then a normal leather one! I now have the T6 jump on my new horse and again I love them.

They cost between £300 and £400.

I have the brown cob GP T6.

You're hard pushed to tell it's not leather, even once you've touched it. Def nice enough to show in. The T4 looks much more 'synthetic'.

Hardwearing and lightweight. Front can be adjusted as many times as you want and there are a couple of choices of tree and panel type so you should be able to get on to suit.

A T4 will set you back about £350-£400. A T6 will be £400-£450.

Many saddlers fit thorowgood saddles - phone about and ask. They're prob more likely to have a T4 in, so you could get that fitted and then order a T6 version.

I have a T6 GP and love it. Have had it for 3 years and people still say "ooh have you got a new saddle?", it looks so good still. I also have the leather Kent and Masters dressage and really rate that too (although I have managed to scuff that one up nicely even though I've only had it for 9 months :( ). The T6 is so light and the new version has the adjustable gullet so you can change the fit if your horse changes shape. My boy is arab x and also has quite a high wither.

I love my T6, it fits my TB really well and I find it very comfortable. It looks smart and a few friends haven't believed me when I said it was synthetic.

Mine cost less then £250 on ebay, it was 2nd hand but had only been used a few times, my saddler thought it was brand new!

Here's a piccys of mine......
