I'm not working at the moment but most of the jobs i've had have been below mininum wage!!!!! My last job I was on £80 a week!!! (did inclu a room in the house, food and keep of one pony) for the last few months I worked unpaid (only had room, abit of food and a pony who just lived in a field) (long story :( )

I used to work on a livery yard where I got minimum wage. Was a lovely place to work though so I didn't really mind being skint! In my teens I worked at a riding school for a couple of years where we got paid anywhere from £2.50 an hour to £5 an hour depending on how many of us were working that day. They had a set amount of money to pay workers and it just got shared among us - worked quite nicely when there were only 3 or 4 of you in but we definitely earned it!!

In Ireland, muuuuch less than minimum wage, and no horse included, or bills..but I did live rent free.

Here, part time..one job pays between 6.50-7.00 and some other work (but not regular) pays more like 8-10 :)

£7 an hour then horse (inc hay and bedding) and my accommodation both deducted from overtime. Usually end up with £1200 per month.

I used to be paid less than minimum wage for a groom at a riding school. Unemployed at the moment but most jobs I have seen work out less than min wage but you get accommodation/free livery etc.

I get paid minimum wage for working at a riding school doing yard work, leading and occasionally teaching the odd lesson. My livery is taken out of my wages each month, so I don't get left with much! I love my job though. :)

Hello,
Have had a few horse jobs.
One about £50/summer no days off but great fun was only about 16.
Went up to £6.50/hour as a groom/trek leader
One as a groomat livery yard £6/hour
One as a private groom including hacking £7.50/hour

When I worked at a riding stables I got about 20p over what the minimum wage was at the time......have never seen anything advertised locally for more than the minimum wage though!

I am going freelance and will be charging £10 per hour.

Out of that I have to pay tax, and insure myself to work on yards as well as equip myself and travel to yards.

Anything less would just not be viable.

No use whatsoever for your poll, but when I was sixteen I was a full-time groom at the local equestrian centre. Six days a week, seven a.m. 'till seven p.m. Pay was £20 per week plus a full cooked meal every day :D. A pint of lemonade then was 15p

Can I ask what minimum wage is at the moment?

I pay a girl £15 a week to come on a Sunday morning, feed, rug, turn out, and muck out three horses. We've just upped it from £10 as she's nearly 18. She is very trustworthy, and her mother is my instructor and a good friend, so if she's doing the horses when I'm away I know she has good back up. Worth every penny for the lie in on a Sunday!

thanks for all the replies! very interesting...
by the sounds of things im doing very well at the mo then! im 16, and get paid £5 an hour working with p2p horses... im still at school, so usually ride 2 lots saturdays (2hrs) muck out, hay, water, t/o, brush etc 4 horses every sunday morning (hour and a half), then do them in the evenings too (nearly 1hr) so each weekend usually earn about £20-25.. then throughout the hols i work as much as possible (last week worked 5 days, this week 4) Absoloutly love it, and his yard is at the same place as where my boy is kept, just on his own yard, so its really handy - something id love to do full time when i leave!

I work full time on my OH yard, i dont get paid but i get a place to live, inc food, and a pony stabled inc hay and straw, so it works out :)

Hes an instructor though and gets paid £11 ph for riding school and between £20-25 ph freelance.

Yes its quite a lot, but she does a good job, and plaits up for my husband and son if they're doing a show when I'm away. I often work away over weekends, and it means that my husband gets a definate rest day a week!

She also has to walk a mile each way to get to the stables, so thats even more out of her time.
