those of you with 4 year olds - what nosebands do you have on them?

My youngster has been started without a noseband. Mostly because she has an odd sized head :p The actual bridle is pony sized but the noseband doesn't fit as too small  but a cob sized bridle is too long even when everything is shortened

Will try another bridle on her after the winter but can see me having to mix and match to get one to fit her properly  but it will be a plain cavesson noseband though

I feel your pain ellies mum! Both my boys are fjords, they have unusual shaped heads. the horse in question (4 year old) can wear a pony bridle but needs a cob browband, the other older fjord can wear a cob bridle but needs a full browband, their heads are just so big! (wouldn't be so bad if my 2 had lots of brains to go with their big heads!! :P) at the moment they're both in full sized bridles I bought in germany while at equitana, both grackles, lovely gorgeous german leather with real sheepskin on the grackle too :D

My youngsters are all in a Fulmer with a drop noseband. I use a drop in the early days as it prevents them learning to open their mouths and resist. The drop is done up so that you can get two fingers between the noseband and the chin groove.

didnt wear a noseband for a while!

nowin a plain noseband/no flash/no gadgets and a snaffle

Shes now 5 but nothing changed from a freshly backed/broken in 4 year old!

Daughter rides 2 4yr olds - ones just in a cavasson & the other is in a flash but tbh don't know why the owner has it in it as I can get my hand in it its that loose!!!

I was also told by a experience SJ that a young horse should not be rode in a grakle and just in a cavesson, so this is what my 4 year old is in.

Did have him in a plain cavesson but then he started opening his mouth to evade the bit so have a flash on him quite loosely now.
Thing is, my boy has a werid shaped head as well- cob size all of it except the noseband and browband which needs to be full size so need to buy a new noseband!

Depends what we're doing. If I have a headcollar on underneath, then no noseband. If not, then a plain cavesson. I can't see any need for anything different on a young horse?

There's some arguments about not using a cavesson on a youngster as it can push the cheeks onto the still-emerging cheek teeth.

I use no noseband on mine when possible, but have used a flash on him. When he was still unsettled I changed his bit, and he's better now.

I've always started youngsters in a cavesson and only ever gone onto a drop noseband with one. Otherwise I normally end up taking the cavesson off aswell. My current youngster goes everywhere does everything in just a french link and cavesson noseband
