Do you think it's worth me trying? My big youngster is going through his 'teenage' phase, which is fine, 90% of the time he is delightful, and most importantly out at competitions or clinics he's great. However at home we have struggled to have productive schooling sessions quite a few times recently because he fixates on something, either in the woods beyond the school, or back on the yard, etc etc, and won't settle and concentrate like he does away from home. Now part of this might be in my head, i am struggling a bit with yard dilemmas as I know that really to progress him to anything like the level he is capable of, I need to look for somewhere with either better hacking or a better school, or preferably both.... But for the time being I am waiting it out as may be a new yard opening I would want to look at, and would just like him to focus at home a bit more in the mean time. The second problem I have is that he can be a moron on the roads, leaping away from random cars and generally throwing his toys out of the pram which in our very roadwork based suburban hacking is a real safety issue.
Food wise he has 1/3 rations of pure easy so nothing to change there - he is better condition/energy wise on this than previous feeds, he is out 16 hours a day on not particularly great grass and then in with a haynet for 6-8 hours during day.
Just wondering if those of you who have used it think it's worth a go?

I use CCC and love it!

Really find it works - magnesium calmers were not having much effect on J so tried CCC due to its calcium and works really well!

Doesnt reduce performance but really seems to help!

Apparently it helps them to analyse things better rather than just spooking etc

Its good because the level can be adjusted to suit and when i rang about upping the amount before a show they sent me free some extra additive!

Equifeast are very helpful! We must have had about 3/4 free bags of extra additive:D

I have tried it the past but had no luck although it was highly recomended on here, I am currently trying out Equine America Magnitude just on the first week & so far so good.

We have been using it for the last couple of months, I think its really helping with his spooking as he would get fixated on something and there would be no getting through to him, mainly in familiar situations when something has changed. He still spooks but so far I seem to be able to ride him through it much easier now :)

The thing I would say is that you have to feed quite a lot of it especially for loading, so it can be tricky if you don't feed much hard feed. I have to give him Fast Fibre in order to mix it all in.

I have been using this CCC for the last two weeks
We are at the loading dose stage.
My vv hormonal mare is much calmer, she is also less spooky and can concentrate whilst schooling.
I too found Equifeast very helpful and will continue to use this stuff.

i posted about this last week and almost everyone was very positive. I'm still deciding whether to try it. Little bit wary as some people said during the loading phase it made them a bit mood swingy esp on the off days. He's getting some pretty good results at the moment so I dont want to do anything to make these worse. He's extremely sharp and likes nothing better than to canter sideways down the road at something non-existant, fixate on something at an event and refuse to co-operate etc but I'm also convinced his sharpness is what makes him such an excellent XC horse and dont want to do anything to dumb that side of him down. So, still thinking about it!

Thanks all! Star I think I will give it a go, as I've nothing massively important planned for next month or so, do will let you know how I get on. I'm the same in that I don't want him to be calmer per se, I like the spark he has, but just need to round off the sharpest edges for hacking out/working at home!
Clare - he's an absolute gannet so unless it tastes horrid I doubt he will notice it being in his feed, but thanks for the warning :)

i didn't get much joy with it...mine was VILE last year at home- spooking totally ridiculously at anything and everything (someone having a drag on a cigarette for example :o) but was generally ok away from home... so i put him on CCC and didn't notice much of a difference except he seemed a bit grumpier than normal.... having said this- he's not a hot/sharp horse he's more stuffy and sharp- so that might have been why it didn't work....
what i did in the end was boxed him out once or twice a week to school 'properly' and then when riding at home i rode in draw reins or lunged- might not be what everyone would do but worked for me and now he's pretty much fine at home...he is a 7 year old now though! ;)

Diggerbez that's interesting - what was he like as a 5 year old? Roo has never been particularly spooky until this last couple of months, fairly certainly it's not anything physical as he is almost totally fine out and about in different locations!!

Im currently trying there no mag version of CCC as 3wks into the 'normal' ccc we werent getting anywhere, if not worse behaviour, 4days into this trial and good results so far I will be phoning Malcom to give him my feedback, but I would really reccomend trying it, ive tried most other calmers, magic, equine america so kalm plus, feedmark steady up, brewers yeast, magnesium, to name a few, this is the best by far!

ive had great results from CCC. My horse was very spooky and backwards and has transformed. He is far more forward because he isnt spotting something and fixating on it. He will still have a spook but its usually for things that are spook worthy!! But he gets over it and gets on with it.

he is working much softer and lighter because he is listening to me now and isnt tense. It isnt a calmer, my horse is very much alert and ready. He is not in anyway switched off or zombie like. He is actually much much more forward but in a good way because he was so tiring to ride before because he was so backwards.

Before his behaviour was so up and down but now it is much more even, and because he is having good sessions he is learning better and gaining confidence when he is doing new things.

as a 4 year old he was a swine to get on (cold backed/humpy if you weren't careful) but once on he was generally fine

as a 5 year old he was generally ok but did spend a lot of time running away from the leg and doing the odd little spook and was still mr humpy...the spooking started to kick in the winter of that year and continued in various forms for about 12 months i'd say... he'd be fine one day and then the next i'd fall off 3 times in ten minutes  i had all checks done and he was fine...which was consistent with him being fine away from home...so like i say i used draw reins if riding at home- not to hoik his head in- but to establish a bit of control and they gave me the confidence to ride forwards every time he spooked...he couldn't drop his shoulder the same with the DRs on.... my arena doesn't help- its in the middle of the car park and there is always something going on for him to use as excuses to spook at!

the big thing at the start of this year was having large paddies- especially about the right rein...again, everything checked...and trainer advised to persevere quietly and not rise to it when he was trying to provoke an argument.... now he seems generally quite happy. not really sure what has changed...he's now in a new bit and bridle but the change emerged before this- i think its since he's been out eventing and XCing regularly again!

Lol sounds familiar - I have had to start hacking from home in draw reins for exactly that reason, not really interested in where his head is, but it does slow down the drop shoulder and spin movement!!

I didn't know they did a no magnesium version. Whats the logic behind taking the magnesium out?

Ooh, interesting. I have just ordered some of the no mag version - we have been on the normal CC&C it since September of last year, and he has been better, much better, but still has quite a few 'moments'.

Malcolm did email and say ' of course I might be wrong ..............' when suggesting the no mag version!

So hopefully, it will arrive tomorrow and he will be perfect!

Because although magnesium seems to be the panacea of the horse world at the moment, it would seem that some horses have plenty already and the odd few, over react on it. However .............. I will let you know!!!!

Hi SJP1 how are you getting on with the no mag CCC. I have just started my madam on it, this is the 3rd week. I do feel that when I hack her she is a bit more chilled but she can still do quite a big spook at something silly.

They have said that you have to go the full 5 weeks before they start to improve. Let us know how you are getting on.
