Do you.jump them? If so how high? Iv had mine for about a.month and whenever jumps are up he goes towards them and walks over them, however he is a true eavywight so not sure its good to.jump him? He has only just gone 5. Does anyon hav pics a proper chunky horses jumping?
 
Never underestimate the power of a cob! ;)
Mine adores jumping, I mean LOVES it... turn him out in a field with 3ft jumps he'll go and jump them all :rolleyes:
We compete in 3'3 classes too, hes an absolute star.

My heavyweight Draft horse looks interested in jumps but doesn't like lifting her legs over them.
The Clydesdale mare used to literally walk through anything which was in her way, including jumps (and drystone walls).
 
My Blaze is a real chunky girl!! She happily pops round 1m - 1.05m show jumping and the same x country. She used to do the cob 'thing' of half stopping in front of the fence and heeeeaaaaaving her fat bum over ;D but as she got more confident she really took hold. Now she locks on to a jump and there's no stopping her! She's especially fab indoors :)
 
I think HW breeds will always have a slight disadvantage as they are built more on the forehand and jumping doesn't come as naturally to them - I remember one instructor giving me a detailed explanation as to why this was but I can't remember the detail now!

Getting them fitter and more forward thinking will help - I used to think mine would never go bigger than 65 cm but he popped 1.10 mtre the other day as if it was nothing so they can have more scope than you think.

Every horse is different though and it can be difficult to generalise.
 
Yes! My (now sadly retired) mare is a shire x HW cob, when I got her she was just like you are describing yours but slowly but surely she picked it up, and I do believe she enjoyed it. We did get some comments when we went SJing, but she may never have been the quickest but we usually jumped clear :D

Have/had a couple who were good little jumpers. Get a proper cob who can jump too and they're a freaking nightmare. Got a mare currently who can jump anything from a standstill out of boredom! Seen her pop a line of 3 internal half height stables as bounces giving each one 2 ft to spare and not breaking stride once. Equally, lets herself out over the stable door when she wants out too. Little git!!! Worker cob lol.

And the stallion last year...no decent piccies of him jumping but he had a pop in him! Only ever jumped him a few times as he was not long backed...but he'd trot down to 3'3 no problem and was as genuine as the day is long.

Oh yes I can second this!! Trouble is, cobs are ruled by their stomachs then when you teach you them to jump... uh ho!!:eek:

I had to buy the 4ft electric fence posts and arm them from a truck battery to even attempt to keep mine in her fatties paddock. I did see her walk up to the 3ft ones and pop it from a standstill once... but I did have a smug chuckle to myself remembering the people from my (long since left) livery yard who scoffed and said 'you'll never teach that thing to jump'
 
And where ever you go there will be one person who is yet to be shown that cobs can jump & will very rudely make loud disparaging remarks whilst standing right next to you. Most cob owners have heard them - things like "surely that thing/cart horse can't be jumping THIS height" at anything over 60cm! The look on their faces when said cart horse wizzes round clear in a really fast time, doing "hand brake" turns & jumping from impossible angles is rounded off when you tell them he failed vetting due to a large cataract. The vast majority of horsey people know that cobs can be just like pocket rocket ponies & many cobs think they could really be eventers if only they had the right rider.
 
My little cob has a lovely shape over jumps but he's never going to be a speed machine at jump-offs or compete well at the higher levels. He's honest and nimble though so does well at little levels (65/75cm classes)

I don't think cob owners do themselves much favours when trying to prove cobs can jump: the vast majority have no idea how big they are actually jumping ;) No photo shown here looks more than 65cm (2'3) and most are not most much more than 2ft. Many can heave themselves over 3ft + jumps but they're not exactly stylish about it. Piper can drag get himself over 3'6 ok, but it's not flowing or easy for him. There ARE some really talented jumping cobs but they're not common. They're jump not build for it :(
 
Bunping this cause I love jumping cobs :') and Kallibear- mine thinks he's a grade A show jumper now :rolleyes: he can also clear his stable door from a standstill- but he is claustrophobic so I'll let him off ;)
 
Our heavyweight cob could look as "lovely" as this (see how heavy he really is when not trimmed within an inch of his life)

He's on the lower end of heavy weight and jumps 'like a stag'. Up to four feet with a rider, 5 foot gates if unhappy in a field. :rolleyes:

i only got my chunky monkey 8 weeks ago he did cross country with his previous owner although not sure how high he jumped, my aim is to get us both jumping by next summer though i am excited!! :D
 
Not 'heavy', but stocky chap all the same....was actually zangersheide bred! Wouldn't tell to look at....until you put him at a jump. He was my bosses old one :)

Mine's retired from regular competition life now, but yes, he's jumped all his life - he loves it :D he's far better at it that me, as evidenced by my "sit back and pray" position :D

oh and if you put a jumping lane up in his field, even at 19 he will still choose to pop down it in the wrong direction, without encouragement or channeling :cool:

This has made me smile... when I'm in the school with Shy, if I mention "HUP" his ears prick forwards, he gets himself up and proud, and looking for the jump, he simply adores it :) We are getting the hang of cross country now too (against my better judgement and OH's orders), but what can you do when a hulk of a pony want to hurtle over barrels ??

he is so adept at his jumping, he now jumps to where the grass is greener, although he has found out that long grass and a muzzle do not work. haha!!

Oh so there is hope for us yet then!! :D

My boy has popped up to 3'6 and when he's in the mood he has a fabulous jump in him and is very tidy.

My HW cob (15.3hh, 10" of bone) has jumped some pretty big things out hunting but I don't tend to jump her higher than 3ft at home.

My Belgian draft x (17hh, 9 1/2" of bone) has an huge jump, I haven't tried to find out how big she can jump but we have done 3ft3 and cleared it by 2ft!
 
I got Horace as a 5 year old and he loved jumping. 16hh of chunky monkey, he'd got the scope to jump big and could pop a grid like a pony, he was so fast at picking up and putting down!
This pic was at the end of a long sponsored ride and although a teeny fence, shows quite clearly what he thought about this jumping lark! :D

these pics are giving me hope then! mines only just turned 5 so im hoping as he grows stonger he will develop a bit more 'up and go' lol not sure how much bone he has but his legs are like tree trunks!
