In the preparations for moving in with the lovely OH we have been looking at places to keep Loki. At first we hoped to find him a place with a local seasonal trekking centre 5mins walk away that is run by a lady with her own horses but unfortunately that fell through as she only has mares and didn't want a gelding put in with her established herd
So we have gone with possible option 2 - looking at the local estate's fields which are slightly further away but still within a reasonable distance by car. If we end up getting one of those I will need to get a companion pony and have been thinking about a shetland.
The OH does want a horse of his own again at some point but not right at the moment and as we both love shetlands we figured a shettie would be perfect to keep my lad company with the added extra bonus that I am small and light enough (5'4" and 7.5 stone) to ride it on the odd occasion.
Also my very far in the future thought was that when we eventually have a little one we'll have our little shettie there for the little one to learn on
Providing of course said shetland isn't an old age pensioner by the time we get round to procreation ha ha!
Anyway enough of the babbling and to the point - do any of you ride and lead your shetlands from your larger horses? I was thinking it would be nice to take them both out together for hacks, it would be good exercise for the little one without having to cart me around all the time but I worry that either the shetland would decide to go under my lad (15.2hh) and we'd get in a tangle or that maybe it would be too much for the little one - although I have worked with shetlands before and know that they can easily hold their own in a herd and in one particular case lead them in the galloping by a fair whack
What do people think? Am I just dreaming?
